Wings of Fire in MHA

Chapter 10: 10-Slow burn

As UA had given them a day off to deal with everything that had just happened, Carter spent his day hanging out with Abby playing online games as John was still away in basic, it was fun as he was able to catch up with her and they compared their respective schools, and man was UA really R I C H, like absurdly so as the hero school Abby was going to in the US wasn't even half the size of the fake city UA used for the entrance exam, not to mention the main building and the 30 minute bus drive to the USJ so they spent their time gaming and coming up with wacky theories on how UA payed for everything, but eventually she had to log of as the time difference meant that it was almost midnight in the US so now he had to find something to do for the rest of the day.

He wasted no time however and decided to go and sightsee, leaving his apartment he walked around the city and visited a few shops that caught his eye buying a few souvenirs for Cathleen and his friends as well as a a dark blue kimono and black yukata that he bought from an older lady who gave him a cookie so it was money well spent. As he walked through the city he also got lots of stares due to his wings but for the most part nobody noticed him and he made it back home with little issue.

NEXT DAY-

At school Carter was listening to his music to drown out Katsumi and Ida fighting when the door opened and Aizawa walked in with his arm in a cast. Seeing him walk in everyone calmed down and went to their seats as a few asked him if he was feeling better. "As you can see I am injured but that doesn't mean we're going to slouch, you may have just won a battle but now you have a bigger one in front of you . . ." he said as a few students gulped, "In three weeks we'll be having the UA sports festival." he said as everyone sighed 'finally a normal school event' a few though but Aizawa shut that down quick. "This will be the most important event for you, this will be your debut onto the hero scene. How you perform during this event will determine what heroes are willing to invest time in you to train you during the internships later on, so starting today we'll be training lots.

'Makes sense' Carter thought as he knew it would be a good opportunity for the class to show off how much they had grown. Before they could get too excited however Aizawa started the lesson on hero law and they groaned while paying attention as they had to know they law to protect it. As the lunch bell rang Izuku reached the door first and was surprised to see a large crowd of students outside the classroom looking at him and the others with hostility. "Excuse me, can we help you?" Ida said walking over "They just want to check out the ones who fought villains and won, but of fucking extras!" Katsumi said as she walked over mad that a bunch of 'extras' had gotten in her way. "Man is everyone in class 1-A like you?" a purple headed boy said sarcastically as Katsumi's head snapped towards him "Who the hell do you think you're talking too?" she snarled as her palms flashed with miniature explosions.

Stepping forward Carter got between them before Katsumi could start anything "Don't bother with them, they only came to watch us because they know we are better than them." he said as a few of the crowd got angry and cursed at him. Turning he let out his claws and spread his wings startling them as the crowd moved back, he wouldn't attack them . . . would he?

"HA HA buncha pussies!" Katsumi laughed seeing them scramble back as he tucked his wings back in, "You got your look in, now scram before I burn you." Carter threatened them and turned to the rest of the class that was now behind him. "The sports festival means a lot more to them, if one of you does bad enough even a kid from gen ed could take your spot so take this seriously." he said as Katsumi snorted, "You don't tell me what to do, besides you say that like you're gonna beat me." she said puffing her chest up as Carter looked her dead in the eye "I will, and I won't even go all out I'm that much better than all of you." he said before leaving a furious Katsumi behind as he headed to lunch.

Getting his tray he sat down and soon the others joined him. As they ate a few of them looked at him weird and Momo ended up being the one the break the ice, "Carter, are you not afraid of provoking the rest of the student body? They are already against class 1-A, antagonizing them makes no sense." she said as Carter nodded. "You're right, its doesn't make sense, and thats because I didn't antagonize them, I merely stated the truth. If they have a problem with that they can settle it during the festival." he explained as they realized that he genuinely saw himself as better than everyone else. 'His quirk is related to dragons . . . so maybe it's a dragon's pride like in mythologies?' Izuku thought as Ochako and Ida hyped themselves up for training.

After lunch they had math and quite a few struggled as UA students are expected to be both strong and studious, but a few such as Carter,Momo and Shoto had no trouble with Momo even offering to tutor the ones that needed more help after school. As the day drug on Carter wondered how the portal villain had known where the USJ was, and how he had gotten by the schools defenses, but he was roused out of his musings as the final bell rang and everyone started to gather their things. As he stood up and shouldered his bag he noticed that Ochako and Izuku left together and smirked when he saw Mineta and Kaminari looking at them with envy.

Walking over he grabbed them by the shoulders making them jump "OMG how did you sneak up on us, thats freaky dude!" Kaminari yelled as he calmed down seeing who was behind him "You know, if you wanna talk to the girls, you should just be friends with them first instead of just staring, we all see it." he said as the two boys tried to sputter out an excuse but he had already left them behind as he walked out of the class.

As he walked home Carter stopped and got food from a roadside stall and thanked the owner while walking away. As he walked he thought about how he had been neglecting his senses, always dulling them to keep the sensory input at a reasonable level and decided that it was time to fix that. Reaching the apartment he changed into more comfortable clothes before sitting in the living room and started to slowly extend his senses. It was uncomfortable, the smell of human pollution, loud cars and people yelling and conversations that he could hear but not see. Still he endured as slowly it became more manageable until he heard Ochako bouncing up the stairs seeming more happy today and decided that it was time to slow down. By the tie she reached her apartment he had brought his hearing back under control but less so than normal intending to build it up until he could full send it without worry. Still it was quite a bit, even at a reduced range he could hear several showers, voices and pets all throughout the building at people went about their lives 'like ant unaware of the greater forces at play'. He made himself a hearty dinner before going to sleep as he planned to use the UA training center the next few weeks hoping that they could push him.

Over the next three weeks the class trained like hell with All Might and the other teachers pushing them to their limits, Carter noticed that All MIght seemed to hyper focus of Izuku and would even eat lunch with the boy but thought nothing of it as they had similar powers only Izuku couldn't control his as well 'It's like he's never even had a power' he thought as he flew from one side of the training ground to the other slowly picking up speed while increasing the weight of his clothes with his magic. As he looked at the others he saw them working more on power rather than technique and while it would help them now, it would come back and bite them in the butt when they had to go against someone similar in power to them. "LOOK OUT!" someone yelled and he swerved to the right as Katsumi blasted up past him, over the past week the fiery girl had been hyper aggressive with him and the other decently strong students and was pushing herself like crazy. He could do without the constant shouting however as it was quite annoying when he tried to sit still and extend his senses but he used that annoyance to push more.

Another thing he noticed was that everyone seemed to have made their friends groups but Carter had tried to stay away as he didn't really want to get too close to them knowing how fragile human lives were, but it seemed Kirishima had made it his goal to get him to open up as he was always trying to include Carter in game nights or other fun things he and his friends did, the red haired boy had even gotten Katsumi to somewhat respect him as they would spar often and she had dominated game night a few times with how competitive she was, but he always that Kirishima would sneak glances at Mina the bubbly pink haired girl and wondered if the boy would ever say anything her 'not likely, most of the guys in the class are wimps' he thought as he landed as the class ended.

As the weeks went by the class got slightly better but Carter noticed that they didn't seem to really take things seriously but decided not to do anything as they would learn the hard way from failure if they didn't start to take things seriously. After some time the day finally arrived, or at least one day before. "As you all know tomorrow is the UA sports festival, just so we are clear, don't act a fool because the entire world will see you and you don't want your debut to be of you acting a fool, right?" Aizawa said as they shook their heads, "And as usual the student who scored highest in the entrance exam will give a small speech before the festival starts, this years that Carter, I expect a copy of your script by the end of the day since we can't have you get up there and start swearing at people." he added as Katsumi snapped her head back and glared at him, but he just nodded. He didn't really want to do it but knew that if someone like Katsumi or Shoto got up there they'd say something stupid so he bit the bullet and started to work on what he would say.

Waking up the next day, as he ran to school he was surprised that Ochako was able to keep up with him barely, and was glad that she was making progress as most heroes disregard their fitness if they have a strong quirk. Reaching school they pushed past the crowd that had started to form and quickly ran to class to get ready, it was time for the sports festival!!
