Chapter 4: chapter 3
Jasmine froze when she heard his voice, her heart hammering in her chest. She didn't dare turn around right away, her mind racing to come up with an excuse. When she finally turned, still chewing on the food she'd snuck, she looked up at him and swallowed nervously.
"I was just... testing the food! You know, to make sure it's not missing anything important," she said proudly, trying to sound confident. "If it is, I'll go tell the chef about it."
In her mind, she congratulated herself. "I'm so smart! I should be the main lead of some novel, not a maid."
The man in front of her, one of the Rajput brothers, looked at her in confusion. He seemed unsure whether to be annoyed or amused. Without saying anything, he just walked away, shaking his head slightly.
Jasmine let out a sigh of relief. That was close. She watched him leave, wondering which brother he was. But the thought quickly slipped away as she turned back to the food table. Shrugging off her worries, she began munching on a few more snacks, feeling victorious. Thinking she was hidden in the corner, she even did a little dance, swaying and twirling, oblivious to the fact that someone was watching her, eyes fixed on her silly moves and her face stuffed with food.
After the party, she and the other servants were assigned to clean the hall. The grand ballroom, which had been so lively and beautiful earlier, now looked like a battlefield of half-eaten food, crumpled napkins, and empty glasses.
Jasmine decided it was the perfect time to gather some information. As she scrubbed the floor, she noticed a young man working nearby. He looked new, just like her—or at least like the version of her stuck in this world. She approached him with a friendly smile.
"Hi there!" she said cheerfully. "I'm Jasmine. What's your name?"
He looked up, surprised by her friendliness. "I'm Rohit. I've been working here for about six months," he replied, glancing around as if unsure whether they should be talking.
Jasmine nodded, trying to seem casual. "Oh, that's cool! So, what's it like working here? I mean, the family seems... interesting."
Rohit shrugged, still focused on his cleaning. "It's okay, I guess. They're a big family, pretty traditional. The brothers are all getting engaged soon, so things have been really busy. The grandparents are really nice, though. Mrs. Kavita, the grandma, is always looking out for the staff."
Jasmine's ears perked up. "Getting engaged soon?"She knew that was the setup in the novel, but hearing it made everything feel even more real. "What about the brothers? What are they like?"
Rohit looked around before speaking, as if checking to make sure no one was listening. "Well, the eldest one, Mr. Abhiraj, is strict but fair. He runs the business and keeps everything in order. Siddharth, the second brother, is more easygoing, always cracking jokes. And Ranbir, the youngest, is a bit of a rebel, always doing his own thing. Their fiancées are all pretty, but I don't know much about them. They mostly keep to themselves."
Jasmine nodded, absorbing the information. So, she had to figure out which fiancée was the evil one. But how? Each woman looked perfect and well-mannered, just like in the book.
"Thanks, Rohit," she said, smiling. "You've been really helpful."
"No problem," he replied, giving her a quick smile before returning to his work.
As Jasmine continued cleaning, she realized that fitting in and gathering information would be harder than she thought. She needed to be careful, blend in, and most importantly, avoid any trouble that could get her fired—or worse.
"I have to survive,"she thought, gripping the mop tightly. "And I have to stop that evil woman from ruining everything."
