Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Lily's Concerns
Lily called her aunt and finally confirmed that the man standing before her was indeed her aunt's tenant, and she was supposed to live with him! Knowing this, Lily was extremely reluctant. She wasn't used to living with a strange man. However, her aunt kept reassuring her over the phone that Jaxon was a good person. Moreover, living with a man around could actually be safer in many ways. For example, if there was any heavy lifting or similar tasks, there would be someone to help.
Most importantly, Lily's aunt reminded her that if she didn't stay here, her parents would not agree to let her study so far away on her own. Otherwise, she would have to return to the capital and live under her parents' watchful eyes again.
Lily hesitated but eventually compromised. She had worked hard to get away from her parents and didn't want to go back.
"Come on in," Jaxon said, reaching for Lily's luggage.
"What are you doing?" Jaxon's action startled Lily, who instinctively took a few steps back, looking at him with caution. She feared he might make some inappropriate move and take advantage of her.
"I just want to help you with your luggage," Jaxon shrugged, understanding Lily's exaggerated reaction. It was natural, after all. They weren't familiar with each other, and they were of opposite sexes. Lily's guard was up, and that was understandable.
"If you don't want me to, I won't insist," Jaxon stepped back, giving her space to come in.
Lily hesitated for a moment, then grabbed her luggage and walked in. Although her aunt had repeatedly assured her, she still didn't let her guard down completely. If Jaxon made any inappropriate moves, she would immediately report it to her aunt, and then she would have an excuse not to live here.
Once Lily stepped inside, Jaxon closed the door. The moment the door shut, Lily's heart skipped a beat. Although she had planned to stay strong, she was still a young girl. If Jaxon really had any ill intentions, she wouldn't be able to resist. By then, even if she exposed Jaxon's true intentions, it would already be too late.
Lily regretted coming in and looked at Jaxon nervously.
Jaxon seemed not to notice Lily's unease and said, "Have a seat first. I've prepared two dishes, and we'll have dinner soon."
Lily watched Jaxon walk back into the kitchen, feeling a bit surprised. She had been too nervous earlier to notice, but now she could smell the faint aroma of food wafting through the air.
"He cooks? He can't be a bad person, right?" Lily sat at the table and started to daydream, only to be snapped out of it when Jaxon brought the food to the table.
"Aunt Wang asked me to take good care of you. I didn't know what you like to eat, so I made these dishes. I hope they suit your taste," Jaxon said as he sat down.
"I'm not hungry," Lily replied coldly. She didn't want to live with Jaxon and didn't want to have anything to do with him.
No sooner had she spoken than her stomach let out a soft growl. Although the sound was very quiet, both of them at the table could hear it clearly.
Lily's face turned bright red.
It hadn't been easy for Lily to travel all the way from the capital, and she was indeed hungry and tired.
Seeing Lily's hesitation, Jaxon didn't press her. He simply said, "If you need any help, just let me know."
Lily didn't respond. In her heart, she had already decided that she would never ask him for help. She would find a reason to report Jaxon to her aunt as soon as possible, letting her aunt realize that living with him wasn't safe. Only then would her aunt agree not to let her live with him.
If Jaxon had known what she was thinking, he would definitely have taken away her bowl and chopsticks.
After all, you can't believe everything a pretty girl says.
After dinner, Jaxon cleaned up the table, and Lily chose a room, went in, and locked the door from the inside, as if afraid that Jaxon would barge in. Seeing this, Jaxon just smiled.
In the afternoon, Lily went out alone and, as expected, didn't let Jaxon follow her. Jaxon was also happy to have some free time. It wasn't that he didn't want to help; it was just that she didn't want his company. Jaxon stayed at home and took the opportunity to prepare the ingredients he needed for his evening stall.
It wasn't until evening that Lily returned, her hands full of shopping bags. She looked exhausted and out of breath. Jaxon quickly moved to help her, but she refused, saying, "No, I can manage."
With some difficulty, she carried her things back to her room. As expected, Jaxon heard the door lock from the inside.
Jaxon shrugged and returned to his own tasks.
Inside her room, Lily dropped her things and lay down on the bed, panting heavily. The shopping that afternoon had left her exhausted, but she still didn't want Jaxon's help.
"Hmph, no way you're getting into my room!" Lily muttered to herself.
