Chapter 16: Chapter 16 The Dishonest Merchant
Exhausted from the long day, Lily lay on the bed and soon dozed off. When she woke up again, the sky had turned completely dark, and there was no sound of Jaxon in the living room.
Lily opened her bedroom door and stepped into the living room. As expected, Jaxon was gone, and the ingredients he had organized earlier had also disappeared. However, there was a note on the dining table.
"The food is in the fridge. Heat it up yourself."
Although unsigned, Lily knew for sure that it was left by her "roommate."
"I didn't expect him to be so considerate," Lily thought. Although she hadn't completely let her guard down against Jaxon, her impression of him had improved somewhat.
At this moment, Jaxon was already at his stall, starting to do business. His business was decent today, probably because the start of the school year was approaching, and many students had returned to campus early, increasing the foot traffic.
Of course, compared to the other nearby barbecue stalls, his business was still far behind. However, Jaxon could only feel envious, given his clumsy skills and small stall.
When Jaxon returned to his place late at night, Lily, who had just arrived at the new place, was still lying in bed, not asleep. She was startled by the sound of the door opening and became tense.
A single man and a single woman, sharing the same space and not familiar with each other, couldn't help but make Lily nervous.
Fortunately, Jaxon quickly entered his bedroom, and upon hearing the door close, Lily let out a sigh of relief.
Jaxon had no intention of paying attention to what Lily was thinking. After returning to his room, he quickly freshened up and then entered the game world.
Back in the other time and space, Jaxon was still in front of the village chief's house. Thinking of what he had considered during the day, he decided to go straight to the village chief.
"I heard you became Old Li's apprentice? That's great. Learn well from him, and it will benefit you for a lifetime," the village chief said, seeing Jaxon and taking the initiative to speak.
"I will," Jaxon nodded. Encountering a master-level mentor, he naturally wouldn't miss such a good opportunity.
"That's good," the village chief said with satisfaction. "What do you want from me? I don't have any missions here."
"I'm not here for a mission," Jaxon said. "I noticed earlier that there are quite a few vacant lots on the hill behind our village. Grandpa Chief, those lots are just sitting there empty. How about letting me use them for planting?"
Jaxon looked at the old village chief with anticipation. The vacant lots on the hill were quite large. If the chief really agreed to let him use them, he would effectively have his own planting base. In the future, he would have vegetables for his barbecue.
"What do you want those vacant lots for? What are you going to plant?" the village chief asked, puzzled.
"Just some vegetables and fruits," Jaxon replied.
"It's not impossible. Anyway, there aren't many people in our village, and most of them are quite old. They can only take care of their own small plots of land. They don't have the energy to look after the vacant lots on the hill," the village chief said.
Upon hearing this, Jaxon's face lit up. It seemed like there was a chance!
However, just at that moment, the village chief's tone changed, saying, "But..."
"But what?" Jaxon quickly asked. This was related to his plan to make money in reality. If he could really get those lots, not only would he have some of the ingredients for his barbecue, but he could also sell them directly. He believed he could make a good profit. He couldn't help but care.
"But, do you have money?" the old village chief looked at Jaxon with a teasing expression.
"Money?" Jaxon's face froze for a moment, then he looked at the old village chief ingratiatingly and said, "Grandpa Chief, we're already so familiar. How about I owe you the money first? I promise to pay you back once I make some."
"That's not possible," the old village chief shook his head. "I don't accept IOUs here."
"Are you really that heartless?" Jaxon said. "But the village is so small. Where am I supposed to make money?"
Jaxon had been thinking about money all along. However, after killing so many monsters and even getting some equipment, he hadn't seen a single copper coin. This left him feeling quite helpless.
"Want to make money? It's easy!" the old village chief said.
"How?" Jaxon quickly asked. With money, not only could he solve the problem of renting the lots, but it would also make doing other things much easier.
"You can go outside the village and kill those monsters or beasts. Then, you can sell their fur, claws, and even teeth to those who need them. Especially Old Liu from the general store. He always likes to buy these kinds of things," the village chief pointed out a way for Jaxon to make money.
Upon hearing this, Jaxon immediately thought of the two corpses in his backpack, one a demon fox and the other a mottled evil tiger. In his haste yesterday, he had forgotten to deal with them. He hadn't expected that they could actually help him make money.
At the thought of being able to make money soon, Jaxon quickly said, "I'll be right back!"
Then, he rushed out of the village chief's house and headed straight for the general store. Jaxon was already familiar with the few households in the village, so finding the general store wasn't difficult.
"Grandpa Liu, I'm here to sell something!" Jaxon took out the corpses of the demon fox and the mottled evil tiger from his backpack and placed them at the entrance of the general store.
"Coming, coming!" The door of the general store was quickly opened, and an old man came out. The old man was startled at first when he saw the corpses of the demon fox and the mottled evil tiger on the ground, but then he was very pleased.
"Treasures!" The general store owner couldn't care less about talking to Jaxon. His attention was all on the two corpses. The bright light in his eyes was very clear to Jaxon.
"Grandpa Liu, do you want these two items?" Jaxon asked.
"Yes, yes, definitely!" Mr. Liu replied without hesitation. "I've heard from Aunt Wang about you. I know you're a good young man. These two items are good. I can't let you down. So, I'll take both of these corpses. As for the money, I'll give you two gold coins. How about that?"
Two gold coins?
To be honest, Jaxon wasn't very familiar with the monetary system of this world. He didn't know whether two gold coins were a lot or a little. However, they were gold coins after all. And seeing the sincere look on the other party's face, plus the fact that the offer was made in consideration of Aunt Wang's good words about him, he believed he wouldn't be cheated.
So, after thinking for a moment, Jaxon agreed.
The deal was made, and both parties were very happy.
However, when Jaxon thought about having money in his pocket and happened to be in a general store, he went in to see if there was anything suitable for him. But the smile on his face disappeared instantly.
"This swindler!" Jaxon muttered to himself as he came out of the general store, looking disheveled.
