Chapter 6 - Test (1)
Test (1)
Like the saying ‘When I came to my senses, time had already passed considerably.’ I too could see that time had passed in the blink of an eye as I repeated encountering new magic and modifying it.
I smiled wryly seeing how time had flowed faster than expected. Then gathered my thoughts and looked at the professor explaining about the exam in front of the classroom.
“The exam is largely divided into the first test which is a theory test, and the second test which is a practical test.”
The smiling female professor continued speaking while fiddling with her cross-shaped staff.
“Among these, the first test will be conducted with all magic department students gathered in the auditorium. For reference, I’ll tell you the detailed contents there. Just know that you’ll take the test gathered together.”
When she deliberately didn’t tell them the test format. The students, still just first years, showed somewhat anxious expressions and scattered uneasy looks. From their perspective, hiding the test format itself must be an alien element. I rested my chin on my hand looking at such students and slowly turned my gaze away.
‘An exam huh.’
On Earth I would get needlessly nervous when taking tests, but strangely after coming here, I didn’t have such nervousness. Whether it’s because it doesn’t feel real or because my head’s gone weird from researching… One thing for sure was that I was confident there would be no problem I couldn’t solve as long as it was related to magic.
‘Well whatever. I’ll know when I take the test.’
While tapping my fingers on the desk listening to the explanation about the test. Ariel, who had switched seats with the student next to me at some point, smiles and says something to me.
“Deren, did you prepare well for the test?”
Though she’s pretending to be gentle. For me who knows her true nature as a torture specialist who gets pleasure from torturing people, she’s just uncomfortable.
‘But I need to keep getting information.’
Though I dislike it, when I nodded and responded. She still thinks I’m on her side and casually leaks quite important information.
“Try not to come up to the rooftop during the practical test.” “… Rooftop?”
Though I deliberately asked back. She just smiles as if she can’t leak any more information. Looking at such Ariel’s response, thinking anyone would think it’s related to Rumi, I answered indifferently.
“I’ll think about it.” “It would be better not to come… or no? Maybe you should come too? There are people I want to introduce and all.”
Hearing those words, I turned my head while openly ignoring her. Ariel seems to like such response of mine even more as she speaks with a bright smile.
“Anyway see you later.”
I closed my eyes without answering Ariel’s greeting.
Test Site 3.
A three-story building built on the outskirts of the academy. Thinking this building looked more like the academy’s main building than a test site, I took a seat casually. Then while closing my eyes for a moment to relieve some of the accumulated fatigue, a professor on the platform announces using voice amplification magic.
“We will start the first test soon, so please pick up one of the magic books placed out.”
Hearing those words and picking up a book placed nearby casually. The professor continues the test guidance in a calm voice.
“The first test is relative evaluation. The person who gets all questions correct first can receive the highest score. Other students will have grades distributed according to the order they got correct answers.”
At those words, the students look at each other with bewildered expressions. They probably didn’t expect they would need to get all questions correct. I who already knew about this nodded without much reaction while the professor slowly continues the announcement.
“For reference, the most difficult question will be removed one by one as certain time passes, so please don’t worry too much.”
With those words as the last, a timer and time remaining until the next question disappears appears in the center of the auditorium. The moment such things appear. The professor smiles brightly as if she had been waiting and waves her hand.
“Then I will start the first theory test. All students please begin the test immediately.”
Along with the professor’s short words, all first-year students in the auditorium quickly opened their magic books.
Head Professor Melwin drank coffee while watching the first-year students crouched in the auditorium solving problems without exception. As always, watching young people concentrating on something was quite a joy for her.
‘Hope they all solve it without giving up.’
Since she thought tests were not elements to give despair but to reconfirm one’s level. She deliberately chose the test format to be ‘in a direction to make everyone get all answers correct.’
‘Of course there was considerable opposition since it’s a test format not used anywhere else but.’
Perhaps thanks to the achievements she had built up, she was finally able to pass this test format. Whether this test format would be successful would have to be confirmed later but deciding to watch for now while looking over the students. Voices of somewhat excited professors are heard nearby.
“I heard this year’s first years are that excellent. According to the entrance exam professor, the average score was unprecedentedly high.” “It certainly seems so. What I feel while teaching these days. How convenient it is that students’ understanding is fast.” “So I’m quite curious how this test results will turn out.”
Melwin who was listening to such conversation sipped her coffee and casually joined in bringing up one topic.
“Which student do professors think will get first place?”
At those words everyone stopped talking for a moment and looked at the students, then started putting forth their own opinions.
“Of course it would be Rumi. She’s the only student who got perfect score on theory in the entrance exam.”
Other professors speak up in opposition to those words.
“She’s still just a commoner though. Rather students who grow faster with family help would have higher possibility.” “Professor Glen. Haven’t you crossed a line with that statement.” “Did I say something wrong? Doesn’t studying actually grow faster when capital is invested?” “Regardless of right or wrong, it’s not something an educator should say.”
Melwin quietly slipped out of the conversation while watching the professors arguing with seeming enjoyment. Because the goal she aimed to achieve was achieved with this.
‘Teachers provide higher level education to their students when they get competitive with each other.’
Starting from this argument, they would do their best to prove their words right. Just that alone would be great help for the students. While watching the argument thinking such results were quite satisfying.
A new professor in the corner looked around and brought up a new topic.
“Will any student solve that last question…?”
At such question, the arguing professors closed their mouths for a moment. Then smiled without exception while talking about the last question.
“Professor Siris, you seem not to know well since you’re still new. Making the last question unsolvable is an implicit rule.” “… What?” “It’s to discover students excellent enough to be on a different level from others while simultaneously presenting a direction to students.” “I understand excellent but… what direction?” “The direction that such applications also exist. Of course it’s practically impossible to solve since the difficulty is too high though.” “… Ah.”
Melwin who was listening to such conversation adds explanation while calmly smiling.
“It’s actually an old bad practice but. Since there are also many things we can gain from this, we keep it without removing it.” “Yes I see…”
Melwin looked at the new professor nodding then. Turned her gaze and continued speaking.
“To return to the main point. It seems no student will solve the last question as expected.” “Is that so…?” “Yes. Because this year’s last question is more difficult than any test before.”
Looking at the last question written in the magic book:
[Increase the efficiency of this magic by 10%]
She continued speaking.
“After accurately grasping the formula of the given magic. Modifying it in a better direction and connecting it organically without tangling is impossible without considerable magical theoretical understanding.”
When just understanding magic at about one’s level is difficult. It would be fair to say it’s practically impossible at student level to modify it and make it better.
‘Still just challenging it will be much help.’
Though she was confident no one would solve it since it was a question put in just to look at. Contrary to her expectation.
9 minutes 52 seconds. Student Deren has gotten all questions correct.
Taking about 2 minutes per question, one student solved all questions including the last question.
