Chapter 15
The hotel room where Caroline was murdered still haunted Subey's mind. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Caroline's lifeless body, the crimson stain on the white sheets, the silent scream frozen on her face. And yet, Subey remained silent.
No one knew the real truth. Not yet.
She walked down the quiet street, the night air cold against her skin. The city, usually so full of life, felt empty—just like the void inside her. Her fingers clenched the edges of her coat as she reached the small apartment she now called home. Every shadow felt like it was watching her, whispering the truth she had buried deep inside.
Inside, she locked the door, leaning against it. Her breath came in shallow gasps. She had to stay strong. But for how long?
Mia was still out there. Watching. Waiting. And she knew.
The phone on the table vibrated, the screen flashing with an unknown number. Subey hesitated before picking it up.
"You're running out of time," the distorted voice said. "The truth will come out. Are you ready for that?"
A chill ran through her spine.
She swallowed. "Who is this?"
The call ended.
She turned to the desk where Caroline's picture lay. She traced the edges of the frame with shaking fingers. I'm sorry, Caroline.
A knock on the door made her heart jump. Slow. Deliberate.
She grabbed the knife from the table before opening it slightly. The dim corridor light revealed a familiar face.
Mia.
"You look like you've seen a ghost," Mia whispered, stepping inside uninvited. Her smirk sent a shiver down Subey's spine.
Subey gripped the knife tighter. "What do you want?"
Mia walked around, her fingers grazing the edge of the table, stopping at Caroline's picture. Her smirk widened. "You're breaking, Subey. It's only a matter of time before you snap."
Subey's jaw tightened. "You have no proof."
Mia chuckled. "Oh, but I do." She pulled out a small flash drive from her coat pocket and tossed it onto the table. "The last moments of your beloved Caroline. The truth you've been hiding."
Subey's blood ran cold.
Mia leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You should've never trusted John. And now? You'll have to choose—bury the truth, or let it consume you."
The door slammed shut behind Mia, leaving Subey alone with the weight of her guilt.
The flash drive sat there, daring her to face the truth.
Her hands trembled as she reached for it.
And then—she pressed play.
