Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Journey Through the Night
[The Truth]
Midoriya Izuku wanted to uncover the truth. He believed in what Eri had said and sensed that there was something strange about the situation.
Why did [Kurogiri] bring Eri to him? Why did someone from the [League of Villains] say those words to him?
It was clear that the group from [Shie Hassaikai] was suspicious, but legal actions by heroes and the police had failed. After the investigation, this yakuza organization was deemed clean.
All Might and the police came back empty-handed. Negative rumors about Eri spread like wildfire, turning public opinion against them.
Lies aren't scary; what's scary is when everyone believes the lies, and the truth is dismissed as false.
To uncover evidence that could expose [Shie Hassaikai]'s crimes, Midoriya Izuku had no choice but to take illegal action.
Under the cover of night, blending into the darkness, Midoriya and Shinso were dressed in all-black outfits—like ancient night thieves.
The mansion of [Shie Hassaikai], a yakuza organization, had night guards patrolling the grounds. Midoriya and Shinso hid in a dark alley near the mansion.
"Shinso."
"I got it."
The two exchanged brief words. Midoriya Izuku had already explained the plan to Shinso Hitoshi earlier. With everything prepared, they only needed simple communication now.
Shinso Hitoshi, wearing a black hoodie and mask to conceal his identity, casually stepped out of the alley.
"Hey! Hello!"
"Who's there?!"
The guard, seeing a suspicious figure dressed in black, immediately shouted in alarm. But the moment he spoke, Shinso's [brainwashing] was activated.
The guard froze like a puppet. Shinso's [brainwashing] worked instantly. Hearing the guard's shout, other guards quickly rushed over.
"What's going on?!"
"What happened?!"
"I heard you shouting!"
Shinso had already retreated back into the alley. Meanwhile, the brainwashed guard, with an awkward smile, said,
"Sorry, I thought I saw something. It was just a black cat."
"Seriously, be more careful next time."
"Don't make a fuss. The young boss told us to stay focused and guard the area properly. Don't waste everyone's energy."
The other guards, realizing it was a false alarm, waved dismissively and dispersed. The brainwashed guard then told them, "Sorry, sorry! I'll check the alley where that black cat ran off to."
"Fine, but don't take too long."
Amused, the other guards joked around as the brainwashed guard walked straight toward the alley.
"All set."
"Yeah."
Shinso gave a thumbs-up, and Midoriya nodded in agreement. Having Shinso's help was a huge relief.
[Shinso: Puppet Solo]
While Class A's hero course students were busy training their special moves, Class B wasn't slacking off either. Shinso Hitoshi, as a student in the hero course, had been working hard on strengthening his abilities. He had now successfully developed and mastered his own special move.
Maximizing the "Brainwashing" Quirk to control a single person allows not only the manipulation of their expressions and tone but also makes breaking free from the brainwashing nearly impossible without a powerful shock—unless Shinso himself cancels the Quirk.
Seamlessly, Shinso brainwashed a night guard and took control of him. Taking advantage of the situation, Midoriya and Shinso quickly interrogated him for the information they needed.
...
A short while later, Shinso Hitoshi and Midoriya Izuku found themselves in a back alley, frustrated. As expected, they hadn't learned anything useful.
"These low-level members of a criminal organization never know anything worthwhile. The things they know about Eri are just lies made up by Chisaki."
"Do we have to go deeper, interrogate one of the higher-ups, or even Chisaki himself?"
Midoriya looked toward the Shie Hassaikai mansion. The lights were still brightly lit, showing no signs of rest despite the late hour.
"What do we do?"
"Charge in!"
Shinso Hitoshi was stunned by Midoriya Izuku's sudden, bold suggestion.
"Midoriya, are you out of your mind? There are a lot of people in this organization. Even if I can brainwash most of them, one mistake and we're done for."
"Relax, I've got it covered."
Midoriya waved his hand to reassure Shinso. He opened his backpack and took out a box filled with white powder and a bottle of clear liquid. Carefully, he poured the powder into the bottle, sealed it, and began shaking it to mix.
"Brute force alone won't work. Humanity progresses through science."
"You're not planning to use *that*, are you!?"
Shinso was horrified. He couldn't believe Midoriya Izuku had brought something so dangerous—it felt like they were planning a terrorist attack.
"Don't worry. This is very different from what I usually make. It's mainly composed of materials that make people pass out, and it's designed to avoid detection."
Midoriya continued shaking the bottle. The mixture of white powder and clear liquid turned into a dense white gas, which filled the container, ready to be released.
"Now, we just need to figure out how to toss this into the Shie Hassaikai mansion and break the bottle."
"I'll handle it!"
Shinso Hitoshi eagerly took on the task. He instructed the brainwashed night guard to take the bottle, hide it in his coat, and head into the Shie Hassaikai mansion.
"Take this."
Midoriya pulled out two gas masks from his backpack. He put one on himself and handed the other to Shinso. Since the gas would spread through a dust explosion, wearing a gas mask would protect them.
As a side note, Midoriya's usual devices often relied on deadly gases with a permeating effect. If someone couldn't escape in time, they were as good as done.
"Ready?"
"Ready!"
With their gas masks on, the two gave each other a thumbs-up. Meanwhile, the brainwashed night guard, hiding the bottle under his coat, walked straight into the Shie Hassaikai mansion. None of the other guards paid him much attention, as they recognized him as one of their own.
Once the guard reached the central area of the mansion, Shinso Hitoshi issued his final brainwashing command. The guard pulled the bottle out from under his coat and smashed it hard onto the ground.
The glass shattered, releasing the mixture and creating an explosion-like effect. The dense white gas quickly spread, enveloping the entire mansion and its surroundings.
The guards outside were startled, but after inhaling just a bit of the white dust-filled air, they immediately felt dizzy and collapsed.
"It worked! But wait a bit—give it about five minutes!"
Midoriya Izuku was thrilled to see their plan succeed, but he stopped Shinso Hitoshi from moving forward. The white dust was still too thick; waiting about five minutes would allow it to dissipate and become safe to navigate.
