Chapter 547 Devourers
547 Devourers
Matthew was soon viciously mauled by a huge bear that sent him rolling backward. He had fought for dozens of minutes straight and killed most of them; there was only one bear among them, holding up amazingly.
He had no skill; he had only power. With sheer power, he was resisting Matt's powerful blows, but at the same time, part of his bones were broken.
Battling for so long also caused wounds on Matthew, but he had amazing regeneration, so although he was full of blood everywhere and had some open wounds, it wasn't as bad as the bear, which was missing an eye and an arm; even one of his legs was sore.
Still, he held out to the end.
Matthew dealt him numerous blows from one side to the other, fiercely hitting his whole body, but his determination did not waver.
Even though he was already almost on the ground lying down, the bear continued to strike again and again.
'Incredible determination.' Matthew didn't want to make it suffer anymore and was already exhausted, so he jumped up and landed on its head, destroying it completely.
Finally, he was able to bend down to rest.
"You've been tough, little one. I should say you're the most tenacious wild animal I've ever seen. Even more tenacious than those with power, fighting with conviction to the end. Looks like I'll remember you a long time because of that." He said, smiling a little as he looked at the carcass of the white bear in front of him.
It had held up so well and for so long that it made him admire it a little. Maybe being like that was the best way to live.
After resting for a few moments, Matthew frowned and looked up.
As he did so, he stood up.
"It seems battles in the mountains are as common as I had been told. This will be very good training." He smiled again.
Suddenly, several bodies showed themselves. Some were up in the trees, and some were walking on the ground. But all had peculiar shark-like teeth.
Devourers.
That race capable of fighting vampires and not losing, the same race that feeds on vampires. Perhaps the most dangerous race directly, if not for the cunning of the humans.
They, though they did not recognize him, smiled at him.
"A little vampire in the vicinity of our territories, hehe. Looks like the food will be good today."
Those were the words of greeting before an archer Devourer shot a magical arrow towards Matthew, trying to stick it in his head.
Matt jerked his head to the side and watched as the arrow passed through and hit a tree hard, making a huge hole in it despite its thickness.
"Although it hasn't been long, I seem to be glad to hear someone speak. I'm afraid I'm getting faint-hearted, so I'll have to harden it in a slaughter of talking idiots. Come here, let me test the difference between your powers and that of these little wild animals."
The devourers felt angry at his provocations.
They were not many—only five—and possibly a group of area patrollers, but it was clear that they were more powerful than those beasts.
How much more powerful? That remained to be seen.
He didn't even bother returning to his peak state. He needed to train his body, and this was a perfect opportunity. Earlier, the beasts wounded him several times and almost infected him with strange poisons, but in the end, he managed to come out victorious. However, there were many beasts and they were not that powerful.
The difference between normal beasts who have power and developed races like the devourers is that normal beasts don't really know how to use their powers very well. They can have 50K of power and not even have the strength of someone with 30K from one of the races because they don't have magic unless they are born with it or are peculiar, of which Matthew hasn't found any here. They also don't have a cunning way of using their powers; they just have it, and that's it.
Because of that, Matthew knew that these devourers would be more powerful than those beasts, so it would be a great workout for his body. He's not even sure he can win without his power, but he'll at least try.
While he was deep in his thoughts, one of the devourers who felt angry at his provocations jumped towards him forcefully.
"This will be our meal today. Please enjoy a delicious vampire!" he growled and laughed.
It was quite fast, but Matthew still managed to raise his hand to stop his sudden advance. The powerful attack hit his hand firmly, causing it to burn madly, and he was pushed back.
'Wow, in power, they're not that powerful, but this body strength is insane.' After realizing they didn't even have 25K power, he thought they were so tough that it was scary.
Also, it was so fast that Matthew couldn't counterattack before being rammed again by a strong attack from the same guy.
Still, for the 2nd attack, he was more prepared, so after deflecting it with one move, he ducked his body a bit, tilting it to the side, and unleashed a round of attacks toward the thing's lower stomach.
One thing to note is that, despite Matthew's great height, he was the smallest among those present. All of these devourers were over 2 meters tall, not only tall but also muscular. They had developed their bodies very well and had skills. Therefore, they were dangerous.
Seeing that Matthew managed to defend himself well and counterattack his leader, another devourer jumped towards him; at the same time, an arrow flew at high speed.
Matthew took advantage of the moment gained by his round of attacks to jump to the side, but as he fell, he had to raise his arms to defend himself from the attack of the other beast that was attacking him head-on.
His bones were able to endure, but somehow, they creaked for a moment.
'It's not enough strengthening if something as weak as this still manages to hurt me like this.' He set his gaze fixed on trying to strengthen himself further, so after parrying the attack, his left leg, which was a little ahead of his right, flew in an arc until it hit his opponent in the area near the neck.
The devourer did not expect such an attack, so the kick's power sent him flying across the place until he hit a huge tree. Although it was powerful, that blow was felt so much that he had to fix the bones in his neck, which seemed to have been dislocated a little by the impact.
But Matthew had too much trouble realizing that his casual kick had been so effective that he had to firmly grab the arrow flying towards him when he saw that he could not dodge it. This arrow came within a hair's breadth of sticking in his chest.
"Arrows aimed with magic. Tsk, you annoying bastards." He grunted, though he grinned. This seemed to be getting fun suddenly; naturally, he was excited.
