The thirty-fourth trip to the underground power plant.
In five days, Chris had visited the underground power plant 33 times, yet the power storage progress remained incomplete, still shy of 100%.
Initially, Chris had believed he would gain a steady 5% progress with each trip, but the largest single increase occurred during his very first attempt. Since then, each visit had only yielded a meager 2% or 3% increase.
This pace made Chris resign himself to spending at least two more days completing the task.
"Garchomp, Dragon Claw!"
With a fierce charge, Garchomp executed a clean Dragon Claw, knocking out the leader of this 34th run—a Magnezone.
Throughout these thirty-four trips, Chris had noticed one undeniable truth: this underground power plant was a treasure trove of Electric- and Steel-type Pokémon.
Occasionally, Chris encountered Pokémon he hadn't seen before, such as Mareep, Pichu, and Klink. Whenever possible, he caught them all. However, none of the Pokémon so far had substantial training value.
Moreover, the Pokémon encountered in the power plant refreshed with each visit. Not only did ordinary Pokémon appear anew, but the "boss" Pokémon guarding the power supply also varied—always Electric-types.
Chris had previously faced formidable bosses like Ampharos, Zebstrika, and Eelektross. Some of these Pokémon boasted impressive individual values. For example, he had once captured a 4V Zebstrika, his best find yet.
This experience reminded Chris of farming Mirage Tower—a dungeon that seemed to endlessly generate strong Pokémon. However, unlike Mirage Tower, the underground power plant offered no way to predict the strength or type of boss Pokémon waiting ahead.
When the thirty-fourth trip concluded, Chris finally received a notification:
[Special Dungeon "Runaway Underground Power Station" (completed). Reward obtained: Magnet.]
With the dungeon cleared and the power storage progress reaching 100%, Chris prepared for one final visit.
"Let's see what happens at 100%." He couldn't help but feel a surge of anticipation as he entered the dungeon for the thirty-fifth time.
This time, something was different. The once-familiar scenery of the power plant had changed. The usual bright lights were replaced by dim, ominous red hues, as though an eerie blood-red glow illuminated the area.
In reality, there were no lightbulbs at all. Instead, faint red sparks flowed throughout the power plant, their glow pulsating in a way that made Chris uneasy.
These crimson sparks mirrored the same glow he had noticed on the bosses he'd defeated in earlier runs.
"The atmosphere is different," Chris muttered. He smiled grimly. "Change is good. The greater the danger, the greater the reward."
"Flash," Chris commanded as he released his Gardevoir.
A radiant sphere of light illuminated the dim surroundings.
The power plant's layout remained the same: a spacious office littered with documents, leading to a passage that split into two directions. As always, the right passage was blocked by an iron gate.
After thirty-four trips, Chris had memorized the fastest route to the plant's power source.
"Dragon Claw," he instructed, throwing another Poké Ball.
Garchomp emerged, and with practiced ease, it tore through the iron gate. A light shove from its claw sent the gate flying.
Behind the gate, as expected, was another batch of Pokémon. Their species varied with each run, and rare Electric-types occasionally appeared.
"What's it going to be this time?" Chris wondered aloud.
As he looked up, a chill ran down his spine.
Before him stood a trio of Magnezones: LV56, LV53, and LV52.
The three Magnezones were all over level 50, each with ominous red eyes.
"Zizizi!!!"
Without hesitation, the Magnezones Lock On to Chris and Garchomp, their Electric- and Steel-type attacks charging simultaneously.
"Garchomp, Earthquake!" Chris ordered quickly. "Teleport!" he added, directing Gardevoir to act as well.
The two Pokémon executed their commands in succession. Garchomp stood firm against the barrage of attacks, stomping the floor with a powerful Earthquake. The ground trembled violently, causing cracks to spread like spiderwebs. The attack rippled out, slamming into the surrounding Magnezones.
Before Garchomp could confirm the results, Gardevoir teleported them both back to the office.
Less than two seconds later, the area they had just occupied was engulfed in a storm of lightning bolts and metallic shrapnel.
Chris's vision flickered with a series of prompts:
[Defeated Magnezone LV52. Garchomp gained 5012 EXP.]
[Defeated Magnezone LV54. Garchomp gained 5533 EXP.]
Despite their high levels and solid defenses, the Magnezones were at a significant disadvantage. As dual Electric- and Steel-types, they were four times weak to Ground-type moves. Garchomp's Earthquake was devastating.
The first wave of Magnezones, lacking the Sturdy ability, fell instantly. Those who attempted to evade were not fast enough.
However, the remaining Magnezones—those that withstood the initial Earthquake—immediately pursued.
Chris was ready. "Garchomp, Earthquake again!"
Garchomp stomped the ground a second time, sending another violent shockwave through the floor. This time, the Magnezones attempted to evade with Magnet Rise, but their efforts were too slow.
Simultaneously, a brilliant orb of light burst forth from Gardevoir.
"Dazzling Gleam!" Chris commanded, watching as the explosion of radiant energy engulfed the Magnezones.
The prompts continued to light up:
[Defeated Magnezone LV53. Garchomp gained 5217 EXP.]
[Defeated Magnezone LV54. Garchomp gained 5533 EXP.]
Chris smirked in satisfaction. "Now this is what I call efficient leveling! The highest-level Pokémon I find in group battles are only around level 24. Taking down five level 24s doesn't even come close to the experience one level 50 Pokémon gives!"
"Gar~~" Gardevoir suddenly tugged at Chris's sleeve.
"What's wrong?" Chris asked, turning to follow Gardevoir's gaze.
What he saw made his blood run cold.
From the shadows of the office, countless red eyes glinted ominously.
More Pokémon were emerging.
All of them.
