"So that's why it's been so hard to find Pokémon hunters," Tyson muttered, standing next to Kowa's unconscious form.
From the results of the interrogation, Tyson deduced that Pokémon hunters frequently changed their locations to avoid detection. The information he'd gathered from Takenaka was already outdated, making it nearly impossible to track down active hunters.
If Kowa hadn't disguised himself as an Alliance trainer so convincingly, Tyson wouldn't have encountered him at all.
Realizing this, Tyson abandoned his plan to actively hunt Pokémon hunters.
"Unless I want to risk my neck asking Shadow for intel on Team Rocket operatives, which would surely end badly for me," Tyson mused. "It seems I'll have to stick to earning mission points by battling Pokémon. Hunting people is far too messy."
After submitting the mission information and disposing of Kowa's body, Tyson stretched and moved on, entering what he jokingly called "sage mode."
Nearby, Charizard and the others exchanged exasperated looks, clearly unimpressed by Tyson's sudden shift in tone. They hadn't forgotten his earlier, far-from-sage behavior.
"Charizard, return for now. Rest up, and I'll call you out when we face a worthy opponent," Tyson said, recalling his fiery companion into its Poké Ball.
As Tyson left the forest and ventured toward the nearest town, the frequency of wild Pokémon encounters dropped significantly. He didn't mind; after days of constant battles, his team could use the break.
Sylveon trotted silently beside him, flanked by Mankey and Ditto. Officially, this was "strength training" for the smaller Pokémon. Unofficially, it was Sylveon 's way of ensuring they didn't get carried around in Tyson's arms anymore.
"Alright, let's take a short rest here," Tyson announced, finding a shaded spot to relax.
After a quick snack and some water, his Pokémon began playing around him. Watching them, Tyson felt his fatigue melt away.
Just as he prepared to resume his journey, his system detected several Pokémon approaching.
"Kadabra, come out," Tyson said, releasing Kadabra. He recalled Mankey and Ditto for their safety, then motioned for his team to hide in the trees.
From his perch, Tyson soon spotted a group of people surrounded by Pokémon. Most of them were Mightyena, with a few others like Persian and Azumarill mixed in. The weakest of the group were at the "Excellent " level, while the strongest reached "Elite."
The group looked like bodyguards escorting someone important: a girl of about 17 or 18 years old. Despite their strength, the bodyguards appeared panicked, pursued by another group with even stronger Pokémon, primarily Houndoom.
"Why does she look familiar?" Tyson wondered, flipping through recent news on his communicator.
It didn't take long to find his answer:
"Masae Kuroda, the illegitimate daughter of Hiroshi Kuroda," he read aloud.
The name rang a bell. The Kuroda family was famous for producing high-quality Pokémon food and energy cubes, with their products reaching Kanto, Johto, and beyond. While the family wasn't a household name, their wealth and influence were immense, with strong ties to the Pokémon League.
Hiroshi Kuroda's health was rumored to be poor, and his only legitimate son, Goichi Kuroda, was considered unreliable. This likely led to internal strife over the family's inheritance.
Tyson couldn't help but piece together the classic storyline: the legitimate heir, fearing competition, hired mercenaries to eliminate the illegitimate child.
"I suppose this is where the righteous passerby swoops in to save the day," Tyson muttered. "Too bad I'm not that kind of guy."
Though tempted, Tyson hesitated to act. The opposing side had revealed at least three Elite-level Pokémon, and many of their Houndoom likely knew Taunt, which could severely limit Kadabra's abilities.
Even with his help, it would be a two-against-three scenario—risky at best. Moreover, as an undercover agent, Tyson couldn't afford to attract the Kuroda family's attention.
He watched as the two groups clashed. Despite their best efforts, Masae's bodyguards were quickly overwhelmed. Pokémon fell one after another, and it was clear they wouldn't last more than ten minutes.
"Let's get out of here," Tyson whispered, signaling Kadabra to prepare Teleport.
Unfortunately, Tyson had forgotten one key rule of cliché stories: sometimes, the hero doesn't choose the moment—the moment chooses the hero.
