Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Underestimating Jon’s Squad
A few days later, Gion informed Jon that they were nearing their destination.
"Finally! This boring journey is about to end," Jon muttered.
Before he could say anything else, Kaji suddenly cheered excitedly, jumping around beside Gion like a child, full of energy.
The crew on the ship was already used to Kaji's antics, so they ignored him and kept their eyes on Jon.
"Drop anchor near the harbor. Our arrival will soon be noticed, and someone will come to meet us shortly. We'll wait here."
Jon spoke calmly.
Their destination was this island, ruled by a kingdom—the same kingdom that had requested aid from the Marines.
There were many small island nations around the world, but their strength varied.
Some were powerful, while others were weak and had to rely on the World Government for protection.
This nation, Loz, was far weaker compared to powerful island kingdoms like Dressrosa.
Because of this, Loz had submitted to the World Government, becoming an affiliated nation and paying tribute in exchange for protection.
And now that they were in danger, they had exercised their right to call for Marine assistance.
Unfortunately, their luck wasn't great.
The Marine forces were spread thin, meaning that instead of a full fleet led by a Rear Admiral, they had only received Jon's team.
After all, their enemy was the BIG MOM Pirates.
Jon's prediction was correct.
Before they even reached the harbor, Loz's military spotted them and quickly reported it to the king.
They didn't have to wait long before a group of royal guards arrived to greet them.
"We are the Royal Guard of Loz, sent by His Majesty the King to welcome the esteemed Marines. Please, follow us to the royal palace."
The guards showed great respect toward the Marine officers, knowing that these men were their last hope against the impending pirate attack.
"Alright, let's go."
Jon didn't waste time with formalities.
He left most of his men behind, taking only a small group with him to the palace.
The Royal Guards were well-trained; though they occasionally stole curious glances at Jon and his team, they remained silent and asked no questions.
The journey from the port to the royal palace was long, taking them through several districts and main roads before they finally arrived at the palace gates.
Upon entering the palace, Jon was soon brought before King Loz.
The king was a man in his forties, who immediately looked surprised when he saw Jon and his squad.
As a ruler, he had some understanding of the Marines and could recognize their ranks.
Seeing that the leader was a young man barely in his twenties, and only a Marine Commander, his expression immediately darkened.
However, as a king, he had the experience and composure to remain diplomatic.
Hiding his displeasure, he greeted them warmly.
"Welcome, my honored Marine friends. But… where is your commanding officer?"
Jon and his team paused for a moment.
Then Jon grinned, instantly realizing the misunderstanding.
Ah, so he thinks we're not important enough.
Jon smiled and replied calmly, "Your Majesty, I am the commanding officer on this mission."
"…You?"
King Loz froze.
He had expected the Marines to send a high-ranking officer, given that their enemy was the BIG MOM Pirates.
But to his shock, the Marines had only sent a Commander and his squad.
His frustration was immediate.
"We are facing the BIG MOM Pirates! Do you really think a few of you can stop them?"
Jon and his team immediately frowned.
They had traveled so far to help, yet before they could even speak, they were being dismissed as useless.
Jon's voice remained calm, but his tone was sharp.
"Your Majesty, whether or not we can stop them is something you will see for yourself."
"But we don't have the luxury of testing you! The BIG MOM Pirates have already sent their final warning—if we don't comply with their demands, they will wipe out our entire nation! We cannot afford to gamble on your ability."
A young man suddenly stepped forward from the throne room, shouting angrily at Jon and his squad.
"Our country has paid tribute to the World Government for years in exchange for protection. But now, when we face true danger, you send us nothing but a handful of nobodies! The Marines are treating us unfairly!"
"Nobodies?"
Pebberton and the others grew furious.
They were elite Marines, yet they were being insulted by a mere civilian.
All of them looked at Jon, waiting for his response.
Jon was just as annoyed.
Yes, their ranks weren't high, but the way these people spoke was beyond disrespectful.
"Whether or not we are nobodies is not for you to decide."
Suddenly, a tree grew from the ground next to the young man, wrapping around him tightly.
The prince struggled but couldn't move.
"Father, help me!"
King Loz's face darkened. "Is this your doing?"
Jon looked at him calmly.
"I merely wanted to prove whether we are nobodies or not."
"Don't act tough with us! If you have real strength, go fight the pirates instead!" the young prince yelled.
Jon nodded.
"You're right. I shouldn't have to prove myself to you. But if I don't, you'll continue looking down on us.
Rest assured, we will handle this."
King Loz still looked doubtful.
"How do you plan to handle it? That's the BIG MOM Pirates you're talking about. You're just a group of young officers—you don't stand a chance against her."
"Did she personally come here?" Jon asked.
"…No, but one of her sons sent the warning."
"Charlotte Linlin may be out of our league, but her son? That's a different story.
Now tell me—why did the BIG MOM Pirates target your kingdom in the first place?"
Jon still hadn't figured out why the Loz Kingdom had been targeted, and even Vice Admiral Tsuru hadn't received details.
The kingdom had only sent a general distress call, stating that the enemy was the BIG MOM Pirates.
Jon didn't know whether they had left out the details on purpose or for some other reason.
But before making a plan, he needed to understand the real cause of this conflict.
King Loz's expression darkened further as he slowly began to explain.
