Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Pirates, No Mercy
A veteran soldier and a fellow disciple.
With these two under his command, alongside Gion, Pebberton, and Kaji, Jon could clearly feel Vice Admiral Tsuru's concern for him.
Not only had she agreed to let him lead an independent mission, but she had also handpicked trustworthy and capable subordinates for him.
If it had been Garp, he probably wouldn't have thought things through so carefully—he would have just given Jon a warship and told him to figure the rest out himself.
Garp would totally do that.
----------------------------------------
"Everyone, I'm sure you're not entirely familiar with our mission yet, so I'll explain."
Jon cleared his throat before continuing.
"Our destination is a small island nation, quite some distance from G-1 Base.
But that's not the main point.
The main point is—the pirate crew we're dealing with this time is no ordinary group."
"BIG MOM Pirates. I assume you've all heard of them."
"BIG MOM Pirates? Are we seriously going up against them?"
Luca White, the veteran, immediately looked shocked.
Being a seasoned Marine of the New World, he naturally knew of all the major pirates that roamed these waters.
Charlotte Linlin, also known as BIG MOM, was one of the most fearsome pirates in the New World.
She was undoubtedly the most dangerous female pirate, and in terms of power and influence, she ranked among the strongest.
Previously, White had been calm, but upon hearing this, his expression became completely serious.
Jon nodded.
"Yes, we are dealing with the BIG MOM Pirates.
However, whether or not we will actually encounter Charlotte Linlin herself is still uncertain.
If we do, Vice Admiral Tsuru's orders are clear—if we run into her, we are allowed to abandon the mission and retreat."
"We have 800 troops, but since we don't know the exact situation on the island, we'll only be able to devise the most effective strategy after we arrive."
"I've gathered you all here so we can familiarize ourselves with each other. I'll be relying on all of you for support during this mission."
White was the first to respond.
"Commander Jon, as Marines, following orders is our duty. If you give the order, then so what if it's the BIG MOM Pirates? We'll fight them all the same."
Despite the threat posed by the BIG MOM Pirates, White was only surprised, not afraid.
And when the fight actually started, he wouldn't hesitate.
"That's right! The BIG MOM Pirates aren't invincible—they don't scare us!" Jarell Nion shouted in agreement.
Both Pebberton and Gion remained silent.
Since they were the closest to Jon, they would follow his lead no matter what.
As for Kaji, he simply smirked and stayed quiet.
Although he had been appointed as Jon's deputy, he had no intention of currying favor—he was just treating this as another mission.
To him, Jon wasn't the important one.
The real focus of his attention was Gion.
From the moment he saw her, Kaji had decided she was his goddess.
Jon didn't care about Kaji's attitude.
Unlike White and Nion, who were respectful due to their experiences and past connections, Kaji was young—his reluctance to fully submit was understandable.
As long as Kaji didn't outright defy orders, Jon was fine letting him be.
In fact, if Tsuru hadn't personally chosen Kaji as his deputy, Jon would have preferred to assign Pebberton to the role.
----------------------------------------
The warship quickly departed G-1 Base, heading toward their mission destination.
Though the journey was long, their preparations were thorough.
With a permanent log pose, all they had to do was follow the direction it pointed in.
Only when food supplies became insufficient would they stop at passing islands to resupply.
----------------------------------------
"Pirates ahead!"
The New World was full of pirates, but the sea was vast.
Although many pirates existed, they were scattered across different territories, making encounters less frequent than one might expect.
It wasn't until the third day of their voyage that they encountered their first group of pirates.
"Can you identify their Jolly Roger?" Jon asked, despite already spotting them without a telescope.
Gion immediately answered,
"It's an unfamiliar flag—likely not a well-known pirate crew."
Jon nodded.
"If they're not from a notorious pirate crew, then we don't need tactics.
Just charge in and wipe them out."
If they were facing a famous pirate crew, he would be more cautious and employ strategy.
But against no-name pirates?
There was no need for careful planning—brute force would suffice.
"Yes, Commander Jon!"
The warship immediately accelerated, charging toward the pirate ship.
----------------------------------------
It turned out that not all pirates in the New World were strong.
As soon as the warship charged forward, the pirate crew panicked and tried to escape.
"Kill them all!"
The Marine warship was far superior to most pirate ships.
Despite attempting to flee, the pirate vessel stood no chance of outrunning them.
Once the Marines caught up, they opened fire, blasting the pirate ship to pieces before launching a boarding assault.
The battle was over quickly, resulting in a complete massacre of the pirates.
Jon didn't waste time.
With a bigger mission at hand, he couldn't afford delays.
So he issued a simple command:
"No mercy. Kill them all."
The captured pirates were executed on the spot, without interrogation or trials.
----------------------------------------
"Is this really okay? Shouldn't we capture them and send them to Impel Down?"
After the slaughter, Gion hesitated before questioning Jon.
Jon snorted coldly.
"We have a mission to complete—we don't have time to waste on them.
Besides, we only have one ship.
What were we supposed to do—bring them along?"
He wasn't as extreme as Sakazuki, but Jon also had zero tolerance for pirates.
If he had time, he might have considered capturing them for a bounty.
But right now?
His mission was far more important than some nameless scum.
"They're just a bunch of low-life pirates—killing them doesn't matter," Nion agreed without hesitation.
Veteran White added solemnly,
"They chose to become pirates. That means they were never innocent.
Whether we imprison them or kill them, the result is the same."
White's perspective was the norm among Marines.
Most viewed pirates as irredeemable and saw no reason to spare them.
Kaji grinned and added,
"Beautiful Miss Gion, don't waste your sympathy on those fools.
Instead, why not pay more attention to me?"
"Get lost."
As expected, Gion snapped without hesitation.
----------------------------------------
Jon quickly changed the topic.
"How far are we from our destination?"
As usual, Gion had the answer.
Despite complaining about Jon always relying on her, she still answered properly.
"Based on the log pose and sea charts, we still have some distance to go."
Jon's face turned serious.
"We need to hurry up.
Vice Admiral Tsuru ordered us to arrive within seven days.
That means the island is probably safe for now—but after seven days?
We can't be sure."
"I'll go tell the crew to increase speed," Pebberton offered.
"As long as we don't hit a storm, we should make it on time."
