Chapter 69: Chapter 69: Fellow Disciples and Veterans
Wait a minute.
Suddenly, Jon's expression changed as he turned to Kaji and asked, "Your name is Kaji?"
Kaji looked puzzled. "Yeah, I'm Kaji. Commander Jon, do you know me?"
"No, I've just heard of you before."
Jon was shocked internally, but he kept his expression neutral. He had already figured out this man's identity.
Kaji—if he remembered correctly, decades later in the Marines, there would be two Admiral candidates. One was Gion, whom he already knew, codenamed "Peach Rabbit". The other was Kaji, codenamed "Tea Pig".
"So this is Kaji… a future Admiral candidate. While he may not be an Admiral, being selected as a candidate means he's definitely strong—exactly as Vice Admiral Tsuru described: a powerful newcomer."
Jon nodded to himself. He hadn't expected his deputy commander to be someone who would gain fame in the future.
Peach Rabbit and Tea Pig… They would both become important figures in the future, but right now, that wasn't certain.
At least, Jon knew Gion's strength well—she was far weaker than himself.
Jon quickly set aside his surprise and turned to Gion.
"Gion, how's the unit assembling? What kind of force has the Vice Admiral assigned us?"
Gion huffed unhappily. "You're the commanding officer here. Why are you asking me?"
Jon awkwardly scratched his nose, about to speak, when suddenly, a loud exclamation rang out.
"Woooow! Miss Gion, you are so stunning! Even when you're angry, you're absolutely mesmerizing! I'm going to faint—ohhh!"
Jon shivered all over. Goosebumps covered his skin as he turned in shock toward Kaji, who was practically drooling over Gion.
He wasn't the only one disturbed—everyone around them also felt chills.
Kaji had seemed cool and rebellious just moments ago, but now, he had suddenly switched to a lovesick, fanboy mode with a bizarre, dramatic voice.
"Get lost!"
Gion's furious reaction surprised Jon even more.
He had never seen Gion this angry before—it looked like she wanted to kick Kaji into the ocean.
Watching these two, Jon suddenly remembered something from the anime—there was a rumor that Kaji had confessed to Gion 100 times, and she had rejected him every single time.
With that thought, Jon looked at Kaji again.
This guy had a distinctive face—especially when he smiled, making his features look even weirder.
He wasn't exactly ugly, but he was far from handsome—even below average-looking.
Meanwhile, Gion had a tall, elegant figure, beautiful features, and a charming beauty mark near her lips, adding to her allure.
Judging purely by appearance, these two were completely mismatched.
But this was the One Piece world, where strength mattered more than looks.
Sure, good-looking people might get more attention, but power was what earned respect and admiration.
Right now, however, it was obvious—Kaji was mesmerized by Gion, but she had absolutely no interest in him.
Despite being yelled at, Kaji wasn't bothered at all. He kept grinning and following Gion around like a lovesick puppy.
Jon sighed and shook his head.
Gion was great, but Jon wasn't interested in her romantically.
Yet, for some reason, seeing Kaji shamelessly flirting still annoyed him a little.
Deployment & Departure
"Since the unit is assembled, let's prepare for departure," Jon ordered.
As the commanding officer, his word was law. The previously spectating soldiers immediately sprang into action.
Jon led the group onto the warship and turned to Gion.
"Gion, how many people did the Vice Admiral assign us?"
The ship was a large Marine battleship, capable of carrying over a thousand personnel.
Excluding sailors and non-combatants, a fully staffed unit could have up to 1,000 soldiers.
Jon had already glanced around and noticed a substantial number of Marines—at least a few hundred.
Gion snorted unhappily. "You're the commander, yet you don't even know? What's the point of you being in charge?"
Jon smiled. "That's why I have you! With you here, I don't have to worry about these details, right?"
Gion rolled her eyes but didn't argue.
"We have 800 troops in total. Besides you, the highest-ranked officers are Captains.
Aside from me, Pebberton, and that annoying guy (Kaji), we have two more Captains.
The rest are junior officers and enlisted troops."
"800 soldiers, huh? That's not bad… but I'm the only commander-ranked officer? That's… awkward."
Jon was satisfied with the troop numbers, but being the only Major in a mission against the BIG MOM Pirates felt off.
Even if BIG MOM herself didn't appear, this setup still felt risky.
Gion said bluntly, "Don't be ungrateful. Vice Admiral Tsuru handpicked this unit for you.
Sure, there aren't any other commanders, but these are all Marine elites."
"I was just commenting. I know the Vice Admiral wouldn't shortchange me."
Jon grinned and then added,
"Once we set sail, I want all Captains to meet with me for a mission briefing."
Officer Meeting
Shortly after departure, Jon gathered the five highest-ranked officers for a meeting.
He was already familiar with Pebberton and Gion.
He had just met Kaji, but the two other Captains were new faces.
One looked to be in his 30s, while the other was in his 20s.
Both officers were respectful despite Jon's young age.
This was standard in the Marines—rank was often determined by strength rather than age.
While some officers climbed ranks through connections, true respect was reserved for the strong.
Jon had reached Major at 20, meaning he was no ordinary soldier.
Since they were now under his command, only an idiot would show disrespect or arrogance.
Jon remained polite.
"Gentlemen, since this is our first time meeting, could you introduce yourselves?"
The older Captain, a stern-looking man with a square jaw, spoke first.
"Luca White, former Captain of G-7 Base."
The younger Captain followed.
"Jarell Nion, Marine Headquarters Captain, second-generation student under Zephyr."
"Oh?"
Jon was genuinely surprised.
Especially by the second name—Jarell Nion.
"Captain Nion, you trained under Zephyr? That means we're fellow disciples."
Jarell smiled. He wasn't bragging about his background—he knew Jon had also trained under Zephyr.
Mentioning their shared connection was a way to build rapport.
"Commander Jon, I've heard Zephyr mention your name many times. He called you a genius."
Jon laughed.
"He was just being kind. Compared to Sakazuki and Borsalino, I still have a long way to go."
Then, Jon turned to Luca White.
"Captain White, you're from G-7 Base? But wasn't it recently reconstructed? Why didn't you return?"
Luca's stern face showed a hint of sorrow.
"What's the point of going back? Even if it's rebuilt… it's not the same G-7 anymore. My old comrades are all gone. I have no reason to return."
His words sounded defeated, but Jon didn't underestimate him.
This was a veteran officer—one who had survived Golden Lion Shiki's fleet.
Vice Admiral Tsuru had specifically assigned him, meaning he was a battle-hardened soldier.
Jon nodded.
"Captain White, my condolences. But don't worry—one day, the Marines will settle the score with Golden Lion."
