Chapter 372: Chapter 372: Night Falls, the Melee Begins
No matter how strong a bond is, it can erode over time due to distance and differing priorities. This was the case with the Hyuga and Kaguya clans.
During the Warring States Period, the two families had a good relationship. However, the Kaguya clan, stubborn and reckless, betrayed this bond by exploiting the ongoing conflict between the Uchiha and Senju clans. They attacked from the shadows, infuriating both clans, who then joined forces to drive the Kaguya clan out of the Land of Fire.
Hostility in the Shadows
Kushina chuckled despite the unease in the air. "I keep feeling so many hostile stares. They're hiding, but it's strange. We don't even know these people. Why are they hostile to us?"
It was baffling to her. In what world would someone treat first-time guests with such animosity? Yet, in the Mist Village, this behavior seemed routine.
Shinki explained, "It's the closed environment. The people here are highly xenophobic. On top of that, any changes in the leadership of the Mist Village ignite chaos, with factions vying for dominance. The real conflict lies between the foreign clans and the local clans, a problem rooted in the village's founding. It's not something that can be resolved easily."
Kushina frowned, trying to make sense of it. Shinki thought, "In another timeline, this turmoil was only resolved through bloodshed. The Mist Village's peace didn't come through diplomacy or cooperation. Instead, opposing factions were eliminated one by one. The period of the Bloody Mist significantly weakened the village, and it wasn't until Terumi Mei took over that things truly stabilized."
Shinki paused in his thoughts, his gaze turning sharp. "But there is no mistaking it, Terumi Mei's success was built on the foundation laid by the ruthlessness of the Third Mizukage, Yagura, Uchiha Madara, and Uchiha Obito. Without their actions, unifying this village would've been impossible."
Kushina blinked. "So, seeing a coup here isn't exactly... unusual?"
"Not unusual at all. Speaking of which, it looks like we have some company."
The First Attack
As Shinki spoke, a group of ninjas clad in black made their move, engaging Yagura's forces in a skirmish just outside. Their target was clear: Shinki and his companions.
Barely an hour had passed since their arrival, and already an attack was underway. It seemed many in this village had no regard for their own lives, let alone the lives of others.
Fortunately, the attackers were not particularly strong, and Yagura's men managed to fend them off, though not without casualties. Once the chaos subsided, Yagura himself arrived, looking exhausted.
"Apologies," Yagura said, his voice heavy with fatigue. "I didn't expect someone to launch an attack so soon after your arrival."
Yagura's position was precarious. Every day, he faced assassination attempts and threats from rivals. To survive, he had to fight constantly—both for his life and his family's place in the village.
Shinki smiled wryly. "I can feel the enthusiasm."
Yagura's eye twitched, but he ignored the comment. Instead, Shinki asked, "How is the Third Mizukage holding up?"
"The teacher's condition isn't good," Yagura admitted. "With the village in turmoil, there's no peace to be found."
Talks of Jinchūriki
Shinki changed the subject. "I've heard your village's Jinchūriki is rumored to have achieved perfect synchronization?"
Yagura's gaze shifted toward Kushina. Information was hard to come by for the Mist Village, given its isolation, but the topic of perfect Jinchūriki was clearly of interest.
"Your village has shown interest in the secrets of perfect Jinchūriki?" Shinki asked.
"Other villages has too?" Yagura shot back, his tone slightly wary.
Shinki nodded openly. "The Raikage, Kazekage, and Tsuchikage are all planning to visit Konoha to discuss purchasing this information. Once I return from the Land of Water, I expect they'll finalize the details."
Yagura frowned. This revelation irritated him. The Mist Village was once again lagging behind its rivals. While other villages were already positioning themselves to acquire critical information, the Mist Village remained mired in its internal struggles. If Yagura didn't act fast, he'd miss out on an opportunity that could strengthen his village significantly.
"If your village is willing to sell the information, I'll make arrangements to visit Konoha as soon as possible," Yagura said firmly.
Preparing for the Night
After Yagura left, Shinki turned to the others. "For now, stay in my room. The Mist Village will only grow more chaotic over the next few days. Expect battles to break out frequently."
Night fell, and the tension in the air thickened. Shinki deployed a group of puppets to patrol the perimeter. His intention wasn't to interfere in the Mist Village's internal struggles but to ensure the safety of his companions.
In the darkness, the chaos escalated. Flashes of light and the sound of explosions echoed across the village. Kushina, Mikoto, and Mehu, resting in the bedroom, found sleep impossible as the house trembled with each nearby blast.
Shinki stood by the window, watching as his puppets neutralized threats near their residence. The Mist Village's internal conflicts were far bloodier and more chaotic than anything he'd seen elsewhere. Compared to this, the political intrigues of other villages were child's play.
Here, coups were swift and merciless. Wars and assassinations were a regular part of life. To become Mizukage wasn't just a matter of power—it was about surviving and triumphing over countless adversaries.
As another explosion rocked the village, Shinki murmured to himself, "Every Mizukage rises to power by stepping over a mountain of corpses. Yagura is no exception."
For now, all he could do was protect his team and observe the chaos unfold.
