Chapter 371: Chapter 371: Yagura - "I Can Play, But I Can't Guarantee Your Safety"
In Konoha, Uchiha members are often viewed as enigmatic, but in the Mist Village, certain family clans are widely recognized as having genuine mental issues. It's not just a few clans; most ninjas in the Mist Village are notoriously bloodthirsty.
This was precisely why Shinki didn't head straight to the Mist Village. Instead, he waited for the Mist Village to send someone for negotiations before deciding to enter. This approach ensured that others would take responsibility for his safety.
Moreover, in the Mist Village, if someone were reckless enough to attack, retaliation wouldn't be seen as inappropriate—it would warrant an explanation from the attacker's side. However, entering uninvited and being attacked would flip the narrative, making Shinki appear to be at fault.
Thus, Shinki employed puppets to scout the area. They hovered just outside the Mist Village, remaining beyond the reach of most ninjutsu. The sight of the puppets caused alarm within the village, but since they didn't cross any lines, they couldn't be considered a violation of the treaty established at the Five Kage Summit.
For about ten minutes, the puppets circled the village until Yagura finally arrived with his guards to address the situation. Seeing Yagura approach, Shinki controlled the puppet to land just outside the Mist Village.
A Tense Welcome
"I wonder what business you have with the Mist Village?" Yagura asked warily, his sharp gaze scanning Shinki and his companions.
At this time, the Mist Village was a cauldron of chaos. Even Yagura himself, surrounded by guards, was not safe from potential assassination attempts. Power struggles within the village were routine and often ended in bloodshed.
Shinki raised a reassuring hand towards Kushina, Mikoto, and Mehu, then turned back to Yagura. "I'm here purely as a private individual, as a tourist. My friends and I are traveling around the ninja world. We've already visited the Cloud, Rock, and Sand Villages. The Mist Village is our final stop."
Yagura blinked in surprise. "You're here... to sightsee?" He struggled to understand Shinki's motivations. With the war over, he expected someone of Shinki's stature to be occupied with responsibilities back in Konoha—not gallivanting around the world.
Still, a guest was a guest, and Yagura responded politely. "You are welcome in the Mist Village, but I must warn you—our village is in a state of unrest. I cannot guarantee your safety during your stay."
Shinki nodded calmly. "That won't be necessary. We'll handle our safety and won't interfere in your internal affairs. We'll stay for just a few days and leave quietly."
After some hesitation, Yagura relented. "Very well. I'll arrange for your accommodations, but I strongly advise against wandering the village. I cannot ensure your safety if anything happens."
Entering the Mist Village
Under Yagura's escort, Shinki and his companions entered the Mist Village. The streets were eerie, and the air was thick with tension. Even Kushina, ever curious and bold, felt uneasy under the hostile stares of the villagers.
"Why do they all look so strange?" Kushina whispered, noting the sharp teeth and odd features of some villagers.
Even Mikoto and Mehu shared her discomfort. Despite Mehu being a member of the Hyuga clan, known to have distant relatives in the Land of Water, she received some of the coldest glares.
Yagura moved quickly, arranging a residence near his family's compound for Shinki and his team. Guards were stationed nearby—not to spy but to protect them. However, Yagura made it clear he could offer no further guarantees of safety due to the village's current instability.
Observations and Reflections
Once settled, Kushina couldn't help but express her unease. "The people here look so strange," she said, shuddering. "I've been to so many places with you, Shinki, but nowhere else felt this... creepy."
Shinki stood by the window, gazing at the fog-covered village. "The Land of Water is isolated, and its islands each have unique customs and lifestyles. It's natural for the people here to seem a bit... different."
He continued, "The ninja clans in this village are numerous, second only to Konoha. Many of these families were driven out of the Land of Fire during the Warring States Period by the Uchiha and Senju clans and sought refuge here in the Land of Water."
Kushina's curiosity piqued. "Like who?"
"The Kaguya clan, for instance," Shinki replied.
Kushina's face twisted in recognition. "The crazy family?"
Realizing her words, she quickly turned to Mehu. "Oh no! Mehu, I didn't mean it that way. I just—Shinki told me they're crazy. Sorry!"
Mehu chuckled lightly. "It's okay, Kushina. The relationship between the Hyuga clan and the Kaguya clan hasn't been close for a long time. Honestly, their reputation in the ninja world as a 'crazy family' isn't far off."
Kushina sighed in relief. "I'm glad you're not mad. I just find this whole village so strange."
