My Baby Daddy Isn’t Human

Chapter 22: A Check-Up with Secrets

Raelynn sat in the passenger seat, hands folded in her lap, while the city blurring past her window. She stole a glance at Elion, who was focused on the road ahead. His grip on the steering wheel was firm but relaxed, his expression unreadable, as usual. The silence between them was thick but not exactly uncomfortable—just another of those moments where she found herself wondering what, exactly, went on in his head.

He hadn't explained much about this visit to the doctor, and Raelynn didn't bother asking. She had a feeling he wouldn't answer her questions anyway. From what she could guess, the doctor they saw the other day hadn't been convincing enough for Elion, though why that mattered so much to him, she couldn't say.

"Doesn't trust easily, does he?" she muttered under her breath.

Elion's sharp hearing caught it, of course. "Did you say something?"

"Nothing," she replied quickly, turning her gaze to the window and pretending to admire the passing scenery.

Before long, the car slowed down as they neared a big hospital. Raelynn raised an eyebrow when Elion bypassed the main entrance entirely and drove around to the back of the building. It was a quieter area, away from prying eyes.

Not that she needed an explanation, but her mind pieced it together anyway. Ah, she thought, He doesn't want to risk anyone recognizing him. Imagine the headlines—'Mysterious billionaire spotted at hospital with a woman.' That would stir up some chaos.

The car came to a smooth stop, and Elion was out of the car first. He didn't wait for her, but she was already reaching for the door handle herself.

"Follow me," Elion said flatly, not bothering to check if she was keeping up as he moved toward a hidden side entrance.

Raelynn sighed. "Sure, boss," she muttered under her breath, falling in step behind him.

Inside, the hospital's bright white corridors seemed to glow under fluorescent lights. The low hum of conversation and machine noises were just background noise. Elion led the way without hesitation, moving quickly like he knew exactly where he was going.

When they reached the elevator, Elion pressed the button, and they waited in silence. Raelynn glanced at him, noting the tension in his jaw. Does he ever relax? she wondered, biting back the urge to say something snarky just to see if she could get a reaction.

The elevator arrived with a soft ding, and they stepped inside. Elion's presence seemed to fill the small space, making Raelynn very aware of how close they were. She leaned against the railing, keeping her eyes on the floor number display, counting the seconds until they reached their destination.

When the doors opened, Elion walked out without saying a thing, and she followed him down another corridor. They stopped in front of a door with a polished metal plate reading Dr. Zake Elsher. Before Raelynn could say anything, Elion pushed the door open without knocking.

Inside, a man around Elion's age looked up from a desk full of medical tools and neatly stacked files. He was tall, with sharp features softened by a warm smile. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his white coat was clean, like it had just been pressed.

"Elion," the man greeted casually, standing up and walking toward them. He was friendly enough, but there was something in his tone that made it clear they'd known each other a while.

"Zake," Elion replied with a brief nod.

Zake turned his attention to Raelynn, his smile widening. "And you must be Miss Moore," he said, extending a hand. "I'm Dr. Zake Elsher. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Raelynn shook his hand, appreciating the firm but gentle grip. "Nice to meet you too, Doctor," she said, her voice polite but cautious. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about being here, and Zake's over-the-top enthusiasm wasn't helping her relax.

Sensing her unease, Zake chuckled softly. "Don't worry, there's no need to be nervous. We're just going to do a quick check-up. Nothing scary, I promise."

Raelynn forced a small smile, though her stomach was still tied in knots. "Alright, if you say so."

Zake gestured toward the examination bed. "Please, have a seat. This won't take long."

Raelynn nodded and climbed onto the bed, settling herself as comfortably as possible. Her eyes darted to Elion, who was now standing near the bed, arms crossed and his expression as serious as ever.

Zake began his examination, his previous warmth replaced by serious focus. He moved quickly, his gaze sharp as he checked her vitals and made notes. The change from his upbeat energy to this focused calm only made Raelynn more nervous.

"Something wrong?" she blurted out when she noticed Zake and Elion exchange a brief but pointed glance.

Zake's head snapped back toward her, and his smile returned instantly, almost too quickly. "Not at all," he said smoothly. "Everything looks fine. Nothing to worry about."

"Uh-huh," Raelynn said, narrowing her eyes. "You're sure about that?"

"Absolutely," Zake assured her. "You're doing well, and…" He hesitated, just for a fraction of a second, before continuing, "...the baby is perfectly fine too."

Raelynn's eyes widened slightly at his words, and she unconsciously placed a hand over her stomach. She wasn't sure if she was relieved or more anxious now, but at least it was good news—if he was telling the truth.

Zake straightened up and turned to Elion. "Hey, mind if we step outside for a sec?" he asked, a bit more serious.

Elion nodded, his face hard to read as he followed Zake to the door.

"You can relax here, Miss Moore," Zake said over his shoulder, his smile reappearing. "We'll just be a moment."

Raelynn watched as the door closed behind them, her mind racing. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more going on than Zake was letting on. "Relax, huh?" she muttered to herself, lying back on the bed. "Yeah, sure. I'll get right on that."
