My Baby Daddy Isn’t Human

Chapter 23: Good Thing

The rooftop was peaceful, with only the distant noise of the city below.. Elion stood near the edge, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his coat, his sharp eyes gazing out over the skyline. The wind tousled his dark hair, but he didn't seem to notice. He looked like he had it all together, but the way his jaw clenched made it clear he was boiling inside.

Zake stood a few feet away, leaning against the low wall that framed the rooftop. His arms were crossed over his chest, his white coat flapping lightly in the breeze. His expression was one of curiosity mixed with concern, though he masked it well with a neutral tone as he broke the silence.

"I honestly thought Kade was joking when he told me you were coming to check on a pregnant woman," Zake said, his lips quirking into a faint smile.

Elion's gaze remained fixed on the horizon. "I wish it was a joke," he replied, his voice low and even, though there was a hint of bitterness in his words.

Zake tilted his head slightly, studying Elion's profile. "So…" he began carefully, "the child… it's really yours?"

Elion finally turned his head to meet Zake's gaze. His expression was unreadable, his silver-gray eyes as cold as ever. "The DNA test says it is," he said simply, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

Zake nodded slowly, his brows furrowing as he processed this. "And now?" he asked after a moment. "What's your plan?"

Elion sighed, pulling his hand out of his pocket and comb it through his hair. "What else?" he said, his voice firm. "I'll make sure she delivers the baby safely."

Zake raised an eyebrow, his surprise evident. "I didn't expect you to say that."

Elion turned to face him fully, his body stiff, his voice showing the irritation he wasn;t trying to hide. "What did you expect me to say? That I don't want the baby? That I'd get rid of it?"

Zake immediately raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. "That's not what I meant," he said quickly. "It's just… you and I both know this isn't supposed to be possible."

Elion's lips pressed into a thin line. He turned away again, his gaze sweeping over the city lights below. "I know," he said quietly. "Believe me, I know it all too well. She wasn't supposed to get pregnant. She can't get pregnant. But here we are."

For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence was broken only by the distant sounds of sirens and the occasional honk of a car horn far below.

Finally, Zake uncrossed his arms and straightened up. "Look," he said, his voice softer now. "You don't have to do this alone. I'll help you. I'll give you everything you need to know about this—about her condition, about what to expect. Whatever you need."

Elion turned his head slightly, glancing at Zake out of the corner of his eye. "Thank you," he said, his tone sincere, though his expression remained stoic.

Zake hesitated for a moment before shifting the topic. "And Raelynn?" he asked, his tone carefully neutral. "Are you two…?"

Before he could finish, Elion just shook his head, cutting him off. "No," he said firmly. "We're not a couple. We're not… anything. Just two unfortunate souls who never should have crossed paths in the first place."

Zake let out a soft chuckle, the sound breaking the tension hanging between them. Elion's sharp glare snapped to him instantly, his expression a mixture of annoyance and warning. "This isn't the time to be laughing," Elion said flatly.

"Sorry," Zake said quickly, raising his hands in mock surrender. His lips still twitched with amusement. "It's just… this is the first time I've ever seen you flustered. A little panicky, even. It's almost refreshing."

Elion's eyes narrowed, and he crossed his arms over his chest, his tone sharp. "Tell me one good reason why I shouldn't be."

In response, Zake mimicked zipping his lips shut and tossing an imaginary key far into the distance, his expression exaggeratedly serious. "Message received," he said, holding back another laugh. "I won't say another word."

Elion rolled his eyes, his posture relaxing slightly, though his irritation still lingered. A barely noticeable smirk tried to break through, but he didn't let it show. The silence returned, but this time it was less tense. The two men stood there, the wind brushing past them as they both lost in their own thoughts.

But of course Zake wouldn't stop there, his curiosity clearly piqued about this whole situation. "Kade mentioned something about you stepping in when some drunk guy was harassing her," he said. "Is that true?"

Elion's expression darkened slightly. "I shouldn't have gotten involved," he said flatly. "That's where it all started."

Zake studied him for a moment, his brow furrowing as he considered Elion's words. Then, with a shrug, he turned to face the open sky, his arms resting on the wall as he leaned forward slightly. "Maybe it's not such a bad thing," he said after a moment.

Elion glanced at him, his expression skeptical. "What are you talking about?"

Zake straightened up and turned to face him, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Having a child," he said simply. "It might not be so bad."

Elion's gaze hardened, and his jaw tightened. "You don't know what you're saying," he replied, his tone cold.

Zake shrugged again, unfazed by Elion's reaction. "Maybe not," he admitted. "But I have a hunch this will be good for you." He gave Elion one last pointed look before turning and walking toward the exit.

Elion didn't respond, his gaze returning to the horizon as the rooftop door clicked shut behind Zake. He was standing there, just him and the wind, his coat blowing around him while his mind racing with a mix of thoughts and feelings.

For the first time in a long while, he felt uncertain about what lay ahead. And Elion hated uncertainty more than anything.
