Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Will You Become My Companion?
Out at sea, Little Blue swam as fast as she could, protesting against her master's decision to let someone else ride her. She only wanted to be her master's precious little companion.
"The sea breeze feels so great!" Zhong Xiaochen exclaimed enthusiastically.
Ganyu, Yu, Xiaochen, and Xiao were traveling together to help Yu resolve a personal issue. reminiscing about their past encounters. Xiao, though uninterested in the matter, remained close by as a dutiful bodyguard, unwilling to leave his lady unprotected.
By now, Ganyu had grown into a young lady. Holding a gift prepared for her benefactor, she was eager to meet her long-lost Big sister. Despite her composed demeanor, nervousness welled up inside her.
"Brother Yu, what gift did you bring for Big Sis Ei?" Ganyu asked curiously.
Yu opened his eyes, which had been closed in contemplation. "There's a tech genius named Ahmar in my homeland. I asked him to make something special, and surprisingly, he actually pulled it off."
"What is it?" Ganyu's curiosity deepened.
Yu took out a brick-like object. It was crafted from the branches of the World Tree and possessed a long-distance communication function.
"It's essentially a tool for long-distance transmission of sound."
"That's amazing," Ganyu remarked, her eyes shining with wonder.

Inazuma
The atmosphere in the city was unusually tense. Ei had been attacked by an assassin disguised as a servant, who struck while delivering refreshments. Hidden beneath the servant's robes was a massive axe weighing thirty jin. Though the attack injured Ei, it wasn't fatal. Under everyone's watchful eyes, the assassin fled, swiftly scaling the roof of Tenshukaku and leaping away into the distance. A city-wide search was underway, with strict scrutiny of all outsiders.

Watatsumi Island
The assassin—or rather, the hired assassin—returned to his employer, injured but alive.
"The mission failed. I wounded her, aiming for a vital point, but whether she survives depends on her godly resilience."
The employer, a follower devoted to solving problems on behalf of Lord Orobashi, sighed deeply. "Don't worry, you'll still be paid in full. Just prepare me a ship—I can't stay here any longer."
"Wait. I'll double the payment if you're willing to try again. If you could attempt it once, you can certainly do it twice."
The assassin hesitated briefly before shaking his head. "No, no. Our leader taught us long ago—greed is a death sentence. Find someone else for your next job."
---
"Ei, how bad is it?" Yu asked, concerned. He had every reason to worry. The assassin's method was too familiar—it was something he had taught.
"Not great. It might take me several years to fully recover." Despite the severity of the situation, Ei was genuinely happy to see Yu again. So happy, in fact, that she momentarily forgot her desire to investigate the culprit.
"This technique looks oddly familiar," Xiaochen chimed in.
"Ei, let me introduce her. She's the one I used to carry in my arms back then," Yu said with a chuckle.
"Nice to meet you. What do you mean by 'familiar'?" Ei asked, curious.
"Years ago in Liyue, an assassin tried to kill the Tianquan using a similar method. They hid their weapon under their clothes, attacked in a crowded area, and escaped by scaling a tall building."
Yu's heart was pounding furiously. How had these operatives become so capable?
"Did they catch the culprit?" Ei inquired.
"No. The assassin was well-trained in erasing traces and vanished beyond our borders. We couldn't do anything."
Xiao, who had remained silent until now, spoke up. "I personally pursued that assassin. Although they weren't faster than me, they escaped into a dense mob of monsters without provoking them. I ended up drawing the monsters' attention, allowing them to flee. They even rode off on a wild boar."
Hearing this, Ei turned to Yu with concern. "Have there been similar incidents in your nation?"
"No, this is the first I've heard of it," Yu replied, his expression calm despite the storm raging in his mind. What kind of people have I trained?!
"But I do have a suggestion for preventing future incidents like this."
"What's your idea?"
"Sumeru has an intelligence division composed of reformed assassins. They handle covert surveillance and monitor suspicious individuals. You could recruit people skilled in stealth and establish a similar group."
"That's a good idea. Thank you, Yu."
Yu felt slightly awkward at her sincere gratitude.
Meanwhile, little Ganyu chatted cheerfully with Ei in the ward, her playful tone helping to lighten the mood.
Xiaochen, on the other hand, felt completely sidelined. Watching Ei closely, she thought to herself, What a beautiful big sister! I think I'm in love… Big Sis Ei is mine! And so is Brother Yu!

In the wilderness
Yu sat atop a mountain peak, with Ei beside him.
"I came here to visit you, but I didn't expect things to turn out like this."
"It's okay. I'm just happy you came to see me." Ei forced a faint smile.
"By the way, here's something for you," Yu said, handing over the gift.
"What's this?"
"It's a device for long-distance communication. Let's test it out."
Yu pulled out another device and spoke into it. "Hello? Can you hear me?"
"I hear you. This is fascinating. Thank you, Yu."
"Tell me about yourself. How have you been these past years?"
"Not bad. As a warrior, my duties are straightforward—train and fight. Compared to my sister, I've had it easier. Sitting on a throne must be exhausting for you."
"Not really. You get used to it."
"Speaking of Inazuma, are there any pressing issues? I am the God of Wisdom, after all. Maybe I can help."
"Well… Watatsumi Island's Orobashi is a constant source of worry. I fear he might one day attack. Though he's no match for me, I worry about my friends getting hurt."
"That's an issue? If he's no match for you, why not strike first and end him?"
Ei was startled. Was this the same Yu she knew?
"Yu, that would be initiating a war."
"If war is inevitable, I'd rather strike first than suffer passive losses. That way, my people will be safer."
"But… we don't even know if war will happen."
"Are you familiar with the concept of the 'chain of suspicion'?"
"What's that?"
Yu patiently explained the theory to Ei.
"Yu, you truly are a capable ruler. My sister would never approve of such actions. Compared to you, she's too soft-hearted, not realizing that softness harms her people more."
"Sigh… Let me help you."
Ei hesitated. She understood that Yu's help might mean eliminating Orobashi, but as a proud ruler, she didn't want others interfering in her nation's affairs.
"On one condition—I won't help for free," Yu said, a sly smile forming on his face.
Ei breathed a sigh of relief, only to have Yu suddenly whisper in her ear, "Become my companion. If you agree, I'll give you that island as a gift."
Ei's face turned crimson instantly, though she managed to keep her composure.
"You just want something from me, don't you? This won't work. Inazuma needs me."
"We can keep it private."
Ei felt herself wavering.
