Chapter 7: Episode 6: "The Final Countdown"
The last day of YGGDRASIL's when the server shutdown was going to happen, is bittersweet. The world I had come to love, the friends I had made, and the adventures I had experienced were all coming to an end. As the clock ticked down, the Overlord world followed the same canon as the anime, stuff that supposed to happen, will happen anyway. Momonga, the guild leader of Nazarick, sat alone in the Throne Room, patiently waiting for the server countdown to finish. Meanwhile, I stood outside Nazarick, on the ground floor, gazing at the beautiful night sky with Sebastian Wilfred by my side.
The sky above was a breathtaking tapestry of stars, their light shimmering against the dark expanse. It was a serene moment, one that felt almost poetic given the circumstances. This world or game, has become a real world to me, Sebastian stood beside me, his posture perfect, his expression calm and composed. He was the epitome of a loyal butler, even in these final moments, he remained the same.
I turned to Sebastian, breaking the silence.
"Sebastian, I'm dying in the real world,"
I said, my voice steady but tinged with melancholy. Sebastian's response was immediate, his tone filled with concern.
"Master, your well-being is my utmost priority. Please, allow me to assist you in any way I can."
Though his words were programmed, they carried a sincerity that touched me. I smiled faintly.
"You've always been a good butler, Sebastian. But there's nothing you can do for me now. What I need from you is to prepare for what's coming next."
I handed him a journal item, a detailed record of everything he needed to know about the new world I would bring him into. It contained instructions, information about the MCU, and what would happen to Nazarick. Sebastian accepted the journal with a bow, tucking it neatly into his jacket—or rather, his inventory.
"I swear on my life, Master, that I will follow your orders to the letter,"
Sebastian said, his voice unwavering.
"Even in the afterlife, I will gladly serve you as your loyal butler."
His words, though programmed, felt genuine. I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. The developer of this game really goes above and beyond, fine tuning their A.I, I truly felt that no matter what happened, Sebastian would be by my side, always.
As the final hour approached, I decided to reach out to Momonga. I sent him a direct message, asking him to invite me into Nazarick. The Great Tomb of Nazarick was a fortress that treated all uninvited guests as intruders, and I didn't want to risk being marked as an enemy in these last moments, fighting anything at this moment were just a hassle to me.
Momonga was shocked to learn I was still online. He had been sitting on his throne, likely editing Albedo's status and preparing to face the end alone. But my message brought a spark of life back to him. He rushed to meet me at the entrance, his skeletal face somehow conveying a mix of surprise and joy.
"Sai! I didn't think you'd still be here,"
Momonga said, his voice filled with relief. He probably thought that he would be alone as he were reminiscing about the server final moment,
"I couldn't leave without saying goodbye, could I?"
He led me into Nazarick, through its grand halls and past its intricate defenses. The Throne Room was as majestic as ever, with the guild's NPCs lined up in perfect formation. Albedo stood beside the throne; her expression serene yet commanding, as she always was.
Momonga and I took our seats—him on his throne and me on a chair beside him, it was my own chair that I brought, the throne room really only have the throne in it, and I always made fun of these guild about this, but none of them ever take me seriously. Sebastian stood behind me, ever vigilant, occasionally steadying me as I began to sway from being lethargic, a sign that my real body were slowly dying. We joked and reminisced about our time in YGGDRASIL, recounting the adventures we had shared.
"Remember when we first met?"
I said, chuckling.
"You were in the height of your roleplay days, shouting about 'the glory of Ainz Ooal Gown' or something like that."
Momonga's skeletal face somehow managed to look embarrassed.
"Please, don't remind me. I was so into it back then."
We both laughed, the sound echoing through the Throne Room. Remembering those old days at this kind of time, sound appropriate, by now the only Momonga and me were the only one that were still online, we talked a lot, but as the laughter faded, Momonga's tone grew serious.
"Sai, how are you holding up? Your health… is it really that bad?"
I didn't lie to him. I know that he can see what state I am in right now.
"Yeah, it is. Just like this server, … I'm dying too. There's no cure for my condition... you know…"
Hearing that, Momonga's panic was palpable.
"What? No, there has to be something we can do!"
I raised a hand to calm him.
"It's okay, Momonga. I've made my peace with it. I've donated my wealth to charity, my organs to those in need, and my body to science. All I wanted was to spend my last moments here, in this game, with a friend."
Momonga hesitated, his skeletal hands gripping the arms of his throne. It took him a few minutes, but eventually, he nodded, forcing himself to accept my wishes. My man really is a good guy, he knew when to let go, and being really mature about it.
"Alright, Sai. If this is what you want, then I'll respect it. Let's make these last moments count."
As the countdown neared its end, I opened my inventory and pulled out a special item—a Bracelet of True Self. I handed it to Momonga, who accepted it with a curious tilt of his head.
"What's this?" he asked.
"It's a unique item," I explained.
"When equipped, it allows the user to take on a human form, that resembles their real-world appearance. I thought you might like it."
Momonga stared at the bracelet, his red eyes glowing faintly. A bit taken aback as to why do I even give it to him.
"Sai… this is incredible. Thank you."
I smiled.
"Consider it my final gift to you. A reminder of who you really are, beneath all the roleplay and the guild leader persona."
Momonga examined the bracelet, his glowing red eyes flickering with curiosity.
"This item… it's truly one of a kind,"
he said, his voice tinged with awe, being a master craftsman himself, he instantly knew that it was a Unique grade item.
"Thank you, Sai. But… do I really need it? I'm quite satisfied with this undead skeleton body."
I chuckled, a smirk playing on my lips.
"Trust me, Momonga. You'll thank me later. You might not see it now, but there will come a time when you'll appreciate having this."
He tilted his head, clearly skeptical.
"I doubt it. But… alright. I'll take your word for it."
I leaned back in my chair, my smirk widening.
"You'll see. With all the time you'll have in the new world, you'll find plenty of uses for that bracelet. Endless possibilities, my friend… by the way, my advice… get laid a lot, dude…. Enjoy it."
Momonga sighed, his tone resigned. Me being me like the one he knew, I always just said whatever inside my head and teased him a little bit.
"Okay, okay. I'll keep it. But don't expect me to use it anytime soon."
I laughed softly, knowing full well that he would eventually come around. The Bracelet of True Self was more than just a gift—it was a lifeline, a way for Momonga to reconnect with his humanity in a world that would test him in ways he couldn't yet imagine. That Undead skeleton body of his would hinders a lot humanely activities, so when that moment comes, he would really appreciate my gift.
As the countdown reached its final five minutes, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me, this time it was even more intense. My in-game character, usually so vibrant and full of life, now felt sluggish and unresponsive. My breathing grew labored, and my vision blurred. I knew my time was running out, both in the game and in the real world.
I turned to Momonga, forcing a smile.
"I'm feeling a bit tired. Do you mind if I use one of the guest rooms to rest for a bit?"
Momonga's concern was immediate.
"Of course, Sai. Do you need help getting there?"
I shook my head, waving him off.
"No, no. I'll be fine. Sebastian can help me."
Sebastian, ever the dutiful butler, stepped forward and offered his arm. I leaned on him as we made our way to one of the luxurious guest rooms on the same floor. The room was opulent, with a large bed draped in silken sheets and a view of the starry sky through a grand window. It was a fitting place for my final moments.
As I lay down on the bed, I reached into my inventory and pulled out a journal. This one was for Momonga, just like the one I had given Sebastian. It contained detailed instructions, advice, and insights about the new world he would soon find himself in. all that I know according to the Anime, Manga and Novel about Overlord, I put them all inside of this Journal, I placed it carefully on the edge of the bed, ensuring it would be easily found.
"Sebastian,"
I said, my voice weak but steady.
"When I'm gone, wait a little while before leaving this room. Let Momonga have his moment of panic and realization. Only then should you go to him and give him this journal."
Sebastian bowed deeply; his voice filled with unwavering loyalty.
"As you wish, Master. I will ensure your final instructions are carried out to the letter."
I smiled, feeling a sense of relief. Momonga would need all the help he could get in the days to come, and I had done my best to prepare him for what lay ahead. In that Journal, I also left some comfort word and my well wishes to him, the loneliness and sense of isolation that he felt in that new world is bad, I hope that this journal can help him feel less alone, my guy got the entire Nazarick and everything in it be a part of his family, he should just open his heart a little bit.
As the countdown reached its final minute, my breathing grew even more labored. My vision darkened, and I could feel my consciousness slipping away. Sebastian held my hand, his presence a comforting anchor in my final moments.
"Master…"
he said softly, his voice filled with sorrow. I managed a faint smile.
"It's okay, Sebastian. I'm ready."
The clock ticked down to zero, and as it did, a wave of serenity washed over me. In that final moment, I heard a familiar voice—The One—speaking to me one last time.
"Sai, it's time. Live as you want, my child."
And with that, I let go.
Just as it was destined to be, the world of Overlord began its new chapter. Momonga, seated on his throne, remained fully aware as the server shut down. The hours on his system continued to tick forward, and panic set in as he realized something was wrong.
"What's happening? Why am I still here?"
he muttered, his skeletal hands gripping the arms of his throne.
The Great Tomb of Nazarick sprang to life around him. The NPCs, now fully sentient, moved with purpose, eager to fulfill the will of their Supreme Being. Albedo, Demiurge, and the other Guardians rushed to Momonga's side, their voices filled with concern and devotion.
"Lord Ainz, what happened? …are you okay?"
Albedo asked, her tone was filled with anxiety and worries.
Momonga, still reeling from the sudden turn of events, struggled to process what was happening. But deep down, he knew one thing for certain: somethings are different.
