Chapter 6: Episode 6: 5 Years (2/2)
The fifth month of my second year in YGGDRASIL brought another harsh reality check. My body in the real world continued to deteriorate, and I underwent another amputation surgery—this time, my other leg. I was now legless, a stump for real, a fact that hit me harder than I expected. I do feel down about it. Sure, never sees my real body, but knowing that I lose apart of myself made me depressed a little bit. When my in-game friends heard the news, they all wanted to visit me, but I refused.
"I don't want you to see me like this," I told them, my voice steady but tinged with sadness. "Let's just keep things as they are."
They respected my decision, though their concern was palpable. We moved on, but the weight of my condition lingered in the back of my mind. Over the years I gotten closer with Momonga and the others, close enough to reveal my real-world identity to them and them to me.
Six months into my second year, I experienced my first Player Kill (PK). A group of 20 Level 100 players from a Human guild ambushed me, citing some nonsense about "purging my sins" for working with non-humans. In YGGDRASIL, players always had some ridiculous justification for their actions.
The fight was brutal. Despite my skills, I was outnumbered and overwhelmed. When I respawned at my guild house, I felt a mix of frustration and exhaustion. Losing both legs in the real world had taken a toll on my mental state of which I don't even realized, and this defeat only added to the weight I was carrying.
But then, Momonga, Touch Me, and Bukubukuchagama showed up at my guild house. Their presence was a much-needed boost to my spirits. Touch Me, ever the protective friend, decided to gift me something special—an NPC servant modeled after his own creation, Sebas Tian, the Iron Butler.
"You've been alone for too long," Touch Me said, his voice filled with concern. "Sebastian Wilfred will serve you faithfully."
I accepted the gift with gratitude. Sebastian Wilfred, the Ultimate Butler, was a Dragonoid Heteromorph, just like Sebas Tian. He shared the same stats and skills—a Level 100 Martial Lord and Monk—but with a unique twist. He wore a monocle on his right eye and had a striking mix of white and black hair. Touch Me even crafted a rich backstory for him, explaining that Sebastian was Sebas Tian's older twin who chose to serve me out of respect for my alliance with the Heteromorphic race.
I chuckled at the elaborate tale. "You really went all out with this, huh?"
Touch Me grinned. "Only the best for you, Sai."
Now that he said it like that, I don't want to sound ungrateful by asking why the only difference of appearance of Sebastian Wilfred just a single monocle. Getting a butler of my own I nice, I guess I am an inch closer to become a batman, I supposed.
Momonga also brought a gift—a Black Crown, a job change item tied to a Mythic-level class called Shadow Overlord. The crown was made of solid shadow, radiating an eerie, otherworldly aura. As soon as I heard the name, I was reminded of a Manhwa I used to love, and I couldn't help but grin.
"This is perfect," I said, accepting the crown. "Let's see if it lives up to the hype."
For the rest of my third year, I dedicated myself to completing the Mythic job change quest. It was an arduous journey that took me across all nine realms of YGGDRASIL. I faced thousands of high-level dungeons and bosses, each more challenging than the last. Sebastian Wilfred accompanied me throughout, his presence making the journey less lonely. Despite being an A.I., he was a dedicated butler, and I treated him with the respect he deserved, knowing that one day he would come to life, something that only I would know, so I decided to create a respectable image of me in his memories.
The final leg of the quest took place in Muspelheim, the realm of fire ruled by the Fire Giant Surt. I had to defeat Surt single-handedly, like on my own, it was a world boss that usually can only be dealt with a large amount of player, but for this I had to do it on my own, so, at the end I had to do it myself, luckily, I did it, and then followed by an army of 10,000 Level 90 shadow soldiers. The battle against the shadow legion alone took me a week to complete. But the true test came when I faced the Shadow Overlord himself—a massive king wielding a giant bastard sword and riding a colossal dragon.
The final fight lasted an entire day. The Shadow Overlord had over 10 million HP, and his dragon had a staggering 100 million HP. Funny enough the dragon was the real challenge compared to the Overlord itself, its sheer power and relentless attacks pushing me to my limits. But I persevered, using every skill and strategy I had learned.
When the dust settled, I stood victorious. The Black Crown flew out of my inventory and hovered above the broken throne in the ruins of the castle. I took it as a sign and sat on the throne. The crown descended slowly, resting on my head as a voice echoed through the chamber:
"All hail the Shadow Overlord."
The Shadow Overlord class was everything I had hoped for and more. It came with five powerful skills:
Shadow Steal: Steals a target's shadow, debuffing their stats by 80%. Shadow Armory: Creates weapons and armor from shadows. Shadow Manipulation: Controls shadows to stun enemies, restrain movements, or manipulate the environment. Shadow Legion: Summons a shadow army of defeated enemies. Shadow Overlord's Aura: A passive skill that enhances my presence and intimidation factor.
The Shadow Legion skill, in particular, filled me with glee. It effectively made me a one-man army; a living embodiment of the Manhwa I had loved so much.
With my new class secured, I spent the fourth year grinding my way back to Level 100. By this point, many of the Nine's Own Goal guild members had started to vanish. Some visited me before leaving, sharing their leftover items and bidding me farewell. I accepted their gifts gratefully, knowing that our time together was coming to an end.
I also invested heavily in the game, spending 90% of my real-world money to purchase in-game currency and items. I connected my personal inventory to my Mercenary Guild inventory, creating a limitless storage space that could hold anything I threw into it.
My friendship with Momonga deepened during this time. As the only consistently active member of his guild, he often joined me for raids and crafting sessions. His expertise as a top-tier Crafter was invaluable, and he helped me refine my own crafting subclass.
In the sixth month of my fourth year, I received more grim news: both of my hands had decayed and needed to be amputated. I took a month off to recover, then once again, returned to the game with renewed determination. By the eleventh month, I had maxed out my Shadow Overlord level and mastered my skills. I spent the final months hoarding gold, potions, scrolls, and other items, preparing for the inevitable server shutdown. When the official notice of the shutdown appeared, I felt a mix of sadness and also anticipation. My time in YGGDRASIL was coming to an end, but a new world awaited me.
