Chapter 3: Chapter 03 – Awakening 03
"I should get some food at the nearest convenience store," Akira said, stretching as he turned off his laptop and prepared to leave.
It amazed him, considering that in his past life, it had taken him hours just to finish a single piece of fan art with digital coloring. The fact that he could now create an entire page of manga so quickly was almost surreal. Yet, despite this newfound efficiency, Akira was still human, and the long hours of work were starting to take their toll. His body need food and some rest.
Stepping out of his apartment for the first time, Akira finally got a good look at the world around him. In his past life, he had never visited Japan—his knowledge of the country was limited to what he'd seen in YouTube videos, anime, and manga. But now, he was walking through an actual Japanese neighborhood, and it felt almost like stepping into a scene from one of those very anime.
The atmosphere was uncanny in its familiarity. The quiet streets, the soft glow of streetlights, and the distant hum of life felt like a perfect replica of a virtual reality world he might have explored in his previous life. Akira couldn't help but marvel at how dreamlike it all seemed, as if he'd stepped into a world that had previously only existed in his imagination.
Akira enjoyed taking in all the new sights around him, so different from what he had seen in the original Akira's memories. As he walked, he found himself thinking about the strange rewards he'd received and pondering how they worked. He took his time, casually observing the world around him, especially the people. There was a part of him that wondered if other familiar characters might exist in this world.
As someone who had read plenty of fanfiction—and even written some for fun—Akira wouldn't be surprised if this world included characters from other romcom series. It was a common trope, especially in fanfictions where worlds like Rent-a-Girlfriend were blended with other romantic comedies. In those stories, the various characters often coexisted in the same universe, creating endless possibilities for crossovers.
"Oh, looks like Utaha Kasumigaoka is here," Akira muttered, stopping in his tracks as he scrolled through his smartphone. He had gone online to check for hints about whether other characters existed in this world, and sure enough, he found what he was looking for. Utaha, one of the most popular characters in romcom fanfiction, was unmistakably part of this world.
Akira had discovered this by searching for a novel titled Koisuru Metronome, which had been released just two weeks ago. It was a signature work associated with Utaha's character, and its recent publication was all the confirmation Akira needed. His discovery sent a thrill through him—it seemed his hunch about the interconnectedness of this world was right.
"Hm, I always forget her pen name," Akira muttered, staring at the author's name on the novel, Utako Kasumi. It felt surreal knowing that Utako was, in fact, Utaha Kasumigaoka. However, unlike the reward he received for discovering that Chizuru was real, nothing happened this time. The key difference, he realized, was that he hadn't met Utaha in person yet. Without seeing her face and confirming her existence firsthand, he couldn't verify if she was truly the same as the character he knew.
"So, there's no point in searching for Eriri either," Akira whispered to himself. "I doubt I'd find anything concrete about her without seeing her in person. Maybe I should focus on someone more famous, like an idol or something."
With that thought, Akira began typing in a name. There was an idol-themed manga he remembered reading a long time ago. It had just ended recently, and while many fans were upset about the ending, Akira had enjoyed the series overall. Though he found the ending a bit unsatisfying, he understood that the author had likely planned it that way all along. In his view, it could've been better with a few more chapters to flesh things out, but it didn't bother him as much as it did other readers.
As Akira searched, a familiar notification suddenly popped up in front of him:
[Congratulations! You've found Ai Hoshino from Oshi no Ko. As a reward, you now possess the knowledge of the script covering five chapters of Oshi no Ko.]
The message left Akira momentarily stunned. His reward had triggered when he watched a video of B-Komachi, where Ai Hoshino appeared in all her radiant glory. It was undeniable now—she was real in this world, too.
"Uh… oh…" Akira was speechless, overwhelmed by a flood of sad memories. As a manga reader, he already knew the tragic fate awaiting Ai Hoshino. The thought of it sent a pang through his chest. "This… this is really urgent…" he muttered, his voice tinged with worry.
Akira couldn't shake the image of Ai's final moments. Even as a reader, he had teared up witnessing her heartbreaking end in the manga. The emotional weight had only been amplified by the stunningly detailed adaptation created by Doga Kobo Studio. To now know she was alive and real in this world filled him with a sense of responsibility he couldn't ignore.
"There's no way I can let that happen… not when I know she's still alive," Akira resolved, his gaze fixed on the blue hologram. The notification disappeared, leaving behind the knowledge of the first five chapters of Oshi no Ko. Thankfully, those chapters had yet to reach the tragedy where Ai would be stabbed to death by an obsessed fan—a horrifying scheme orchestrated by her manipulative ex-boyfriend, Hikaru Kamiki.
The weight of the situation pressed down on Akira. He clenched his fists, determination rising within him. If he had the chance to change her fate, then he had no choice but to act.
Initially, Akira had planned to continue drawing the first chapter of Rent-a-Girlfriend and possibly finish it. However, learning about the existence of Ai Hoshino and her looming tragedy completely shifted his priorities. Originally, he thought meeting Chizuru in person might be the best way to test his cheat abilities. From what he'd observed, interacting with her could trigger another reward.
However, there was something even more pressing that demanded his attention.
