After I Let Go, She Regretted It Deeply

Chapter 2:

Chapter 2:

I leaned back against the sofa and said, “I’m planning to return to my hometown.”

After my mother passed away, my father remarried and saw me as a burden, so he left me with my grandfather. My grandfather raised me, and he had long wanted me to go back.

At first, I never intended to stay in Beijing, but Lin Muyao’s appearance changed my plans.

We got together during our third year of university. She was ambitious and, after graduation, was determined to stay in a big city like Beijing to build her career.

I didn’t want to be separated from her, so I chose to stay as well.

All these years, I owed my grandfather, and now that he was getting older, I just wanted to go back and spend more time with him.

Without caring about Lin Muyao anymore, I drank to my heart’s content with Xu Heng and the others, drinking until the early morning.

Xu Heng called a designated driver for me. Out of habit, I gave my home address. By the time I stood at the doorstep, I realized I shouldn’t have come back here.

But the driver had already left, and my head was spinning. So, I simply entered the password and went inside.

As I pushed the door open, I noticed that the living room lights were still on. Lin Muyao was curled up on the sofa, dozing off.

Hearing the noise, she woke up immediately and walked toward me.

The moment she got close, she smelled the alcohol on me and frowned. “Why did you drink so much today?”

She helped me to the sofa and poured me a glass of water. After drinking it, I felt a little better.

She then wrung out a towel and wiped my face as she softly said, “Honey, let’s have a proper talk.”

“I can explain my relationship with Wang Chuan. The two of us—”

Just hearing her mention Zhang Wangchuan made me restless. I turned my head away, avoiding her touch, and opened my eyes to glare at her coldly.

“Stop explaining. I don’t want to hear it!”

She froze, staring at me in a daze.

Her eyes flickered, and suddenly, she reached out, wrapped her arms around my neck, and leaned in to kiss me.

Under the influence of alcohol, my reaction was sluggish. By the time she reached for the buttons of my shirt, I finally realized what she was trying to do and immediately pushed her away.

That moment sobered me up instantly. I jumped to my feet, putting distance between us.

Just thinking about her being intimate with Zhang Wangchuan made me feel sick.

She landed on the sofa, looking hurt and incredulous. “You actually pushed me?”

Looking down at her, I said word by word, “You just slept with Zhang Wangchuan, and now you’re trying to be intimate with me. Do you think that’s appropriate?”

Saying that out loud sent a sharp pain through my chest.

Clenching my fists, I forced myself to endure it and said, “I’ll sleep in the guest room.”

She flared up instantly and sprang to her feet. “Song Shiyue, what do you mean? You think I’m dirty?”

“I already told you, nothing happened between Wang Chuan and me! Why won’t you believe me?”

“Are you deliberately stabbing me in the heart just to see me suffer?”

“Fine, then I’ll stop appearing in front of you! That way, I won’t taint your oh-so-pure eyes!”

After saying that, she shoved me aside, grabbed her bag, and stormed out.

The door slammed shut with a deafening bang, making my eardrums ache.

I stared at the entrance but didn’t chase after her like I used to. Instead, I turned around and went to the guest room, took a quick shower, and went to sleep.

She left without sending me any messages.

I knew she was giving me the silent treatment, waiting for me to coax her back as I had always done in the past.

But this time, I did nothing.

I would make her understand—this marriage was ending. I wasn’t just throwing a tantrum.

During this time, I submitted my resignation to the company.

Several directors took turns trying to convince me to stay, but I refused all of them and proceeded with the handover process.

I also submitted a divorce lawsuit to the court, along with evidence of Lin Muyao’s infidelity.

It was a video Zhang Wangchuan had sent me a few days ago.

In the video, he and Lin Muyao were kissing passionately.

He had provoked me on purpose: “Between you and me, Yaoyao will always choose me. Even if you’re married to her, so what?”

I didn’t respond to him back then. I simply saved the video as evidence.

Good thing I was quick—because Zhang Wangchuan soon retracted the video.

If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have thought to investigate Lin Muyao, nor would I have been so utterly disappointed in her.

Before seeing the proof, I had been uncomfortable with how close she was to Zhang Wangchuan, but deep down, I had still wanted to trust her.

But now, I couldn’t keep lying to myself and continue this farce.

She hadn’t come home, so I stayed in the villa. It was peaceful.

She was gone for three days and three nights.

On the fourth day, she stormed in with a sour expression, yelling at me.

“Song Shiyue, am I really this unimportant to you?”

“My friend’s husband chases her down every time they argue, but you?!”

“I’ve been gone for three days, and you didn’t even call or text me! Aren’t you afraid something might have happened to me? Or do you just not care whether I live or die?”

I waited quietly for her to finish venting before I spoke.

“I’ve already filed a divorce lawsuit. This is the court’s acceptance notice.”

I placed the receipt in front of her. Her eyes widened in shock, and her emotions grew even more intense.

“I told you I won’t agree to a divorce! Going to court won’t change that!”

“If you can’t prove our relationship is completely broken, the court won’t grant a divorce!”

I raised an indifferent eyebrow. “Who said I don’t have proof?”

She looked at me in shock. “What?”

I took out my phone, pulled up the video of her and Zhang Wangchuan kissing, and placed it in front of her.

The moment she saw the video, she panicked.

“How do you have this?”

I curled my lips into a mocking smile. “What? If I didn’t have this video, were you planning to keep lying to me forever?”

“It’s not like that.”

She shook her head frantically and rushed over to sit beside me, gripping my hand tightly.

“Shiyue, listen to me. It was an accident. Wang Chuan and I were both drunk.”

“I mistook him for you, that’s why I kissed him.”

“I really don’t want a divorce. The person I love is you. Please, give me another chance.”

She held my hand and kissed it, looking at me with pleading eyes.

She was gripping my hand so tightly that I couldn’t pull away. My heart ached, and disgust rose within me.

Just as I was about to reject her, she suddenly covered my mouth with her hand and stared at me intently.

She spoke in a soft voice, “Do you remember when we first got together in college? You had a high fever at midnight, and there was no medicine in the dorm, so I climbed over the school wall to buy some for you. I even got punished for it.”

“And when we just got married, we walked in the snow together. You said you wanted to grow old with me, just like that night.”

“Have you forgotten all those things?”

Her eyes glistened with tears, her voice trembling. “Shiyue, I really love you. Please don’t divorce me.”

Of course, I remembered.

I even remembered how she had smiled foolishly after getting punished, saying, “It’s just a warning and a self-reflection essay. That’s nothing compared to you being sick.”

Back then, I had thought—this woman would be the only one I’d ever love in this lifetime.
