Chapter 1
Chapter 1: I’m Tired, Let’s Get a Divorce:
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, I prepared a table full of dishes, waiting for my wife, Lin Muyao, to come home and celebrate together.
But she sent me a message: “Honey, I promised my parents I’d spend the festival with them. You go ahead and eat by yourself. Next year, I’ll definitely celebrate Mid-Autumn with you.”
However, her first love had already posted on his social media. Not only did he upload a collage of their pictures together, but he also captioned it: “People who truly love each other will always stay connected, even if they can’t be together.”
Lin Muyao not only lied to me but also liked his post.
I silently finished my meal and then casually left a comment under his post: “Wishing you two lovebirds a happy ending.”
The next moment, my phone rang. It was Lin Muyao. She sounded anxious and sincere as she explained, “Honey, I didn’t mean to lie to you. I just didn’t want you to get upset. I only felt sorry for Wang Chuan being alone…”
I let out a soft chuckle and, for the first time, hung up on her.
Since her heart was entirely with her first love, I chose to let go and grant them their happiness.
But after I stopped loving her, she regretted it…
I had lost count of how many times Lin Muyao had neglected me for Zhang Wangchuan, always giving me similar excuses.
I once argued and fought for her attention because I loved her too much, but it never made a difference.
This time, I didn’t even bother questioning her.
After hanging up the call, I had a good night’s sleep.
The next afternoon, Lin Muyao rushed home, only to find me packing my suitcase, ready to leave.
She grabbed the other side of the suitcase handle, looking helplessly at me. “Honey, you know that Wang Chuan only has me as a friend in Beijing. How could I just leave him alone? That wouldn’t be right.”
“He and I are just friends, don’t overthink it.”
“Besides, I already promised to spend Mid-Autumn with you next year. I really wasn’t trying to lie to you, so don’t be mad, okay?”
She softened her voice, placing her palm over the back of my hand and gently rubbing it.
In the past, as long as she coaxed me with a few sweet words, I would always relent and forgive her.
But now, I had reached my limit. I would not be soft-hearted anymore.
Expressionless, I pulled my hand away, took the suitcase, and said calmly, “I’m not mad. It’s only right for you to keep him company. You don’t need to explain anything to me.”
I stepped past her, intending to leave, but she blocked the doorway with her long legs, leaning against the doorframe.
Frowning, she looked a little displeased. “Song Shiyue, I came back just to explain so you wouldn’t overthink things.”
“It’s fine if you’re still upset, but dragging your suitcase like this—are you trying to stage a dramatic runaway act like a child?”
“I’m exhausted. Can you stop making a fuss?”
Exhausted?
She could stay up all night with Zhang Wangchuan and not feel tired, yet talking to me for just a few minutes drained her?
Of course. I had been too easy on her before, making her think even saying a few extra words to me was a burden.
I stared at her and said, “I’m not making a fuss. If you’re tired, go rest. You don’t have to worry about me.”
Lin Muyao didn’t believe me. She sighed in frustration. “I really don’t know what to do with you.”
“I even bought you a gift. Can’t you just stop sulking for the sake of the gift I prepared?”
As she spoke, she reached into her bag and pulled out a black men’s leather wallet. A luxury brand logo was imprinted on it.
I immediately recognized it.
It wasn’t something sold separately—it was a complimentary gift that came with a high-end luxury watch.
And last night, Zhang Wangchuan had posted a picture of that exact watch.
I was never interested in luxury goods. So did she think it was fine to just give me a hand-me-down gift that another man didn’t want?
I stared at her for a few seconds before suddenly laughing. My chest tightened, an unbearable ache rising within me, yet my voice remained calm.
“Lin Muyao, I’m tired. Let’s get a divorce.”
Her eyes widened in shock. She lost her grip on the wallet, and it dropped to the floor.
The sound of it hitting the ground seemed to snap her back to reality. A flicker of panic flashed in her eyes, and she immediately refused.
“No! I don’t agree!”
“Just because I spent Mid-Autumn with Wang Chuan, you want a divorce? Song Shiyue, you’re overreacting!”
“I told you, we’re just friends. I’ve long since moved on from him!”
“Is that so?” I curled my lips into a mocking smile.
Pulling out my phone, I brought up the hotel records I had investigated last night and turned the screen toward her.
“Then explain this to me.”
“What kind of ‘friend’ needs to go to a hotel together for Mid-Autumn?”
“Lin Muyao, don’t forget—I work in IT. Just because I didn’t check doesn’t mean I couldn’t.”
“I told you before we got married that I have zero tolerance for cheating.”
Back then, my mother had died because my father cheated.
I loathed infidelity in any form.
Lin Muyao knew this very well, yet she still did it.
Now that I had solid proof, she was at a loss for words.
After a moment, she met my eyes and said, “It’s not what you think. Wang Chuan was drunk, and I booked a hotel room just to take care of him.”
“You’re misunderstanding. Nothing happened between us. I just wiped his face, that’s all…”
Her lies had worn down all my trust in her.
I didn’t want to listen to her excuses anymore. There was no point in arguing.
I turned and walked to my study, printed out the divorce agreement I had drafted that morning, and handed it to her.
“Sign this as soon as possible. You can keep the house. We’ll split the rest of the assets.”
“After the divorce, let’s not contact each other again.”
She snatched the divorce papers, tore them to pieces, and threw them into the trash bin.
Her emotions were all over the place as she shouted, “I said I’m not divorcing you!”
“Song Shiyue, this isn’t fair! I’ve already explained everything to you, so you can’t bring up divorce!”
She grabbed my suitcase and hid it behind her, staring at me with pleading eyes. “And I won’t let you leave!”
She always had a childish temperament around me.
Before, I would humor her tantrums.
But did she really think she could solve this just by acting spoiled?
I didn’t even care about the suitcase anymore. If she wanted it, she could have it.
I walked past her without hesitation.
Just as I reached the door, she hurried after me.
She followed me closely, nervous. “Where are you going? I’ll go with you.”
I stopped and said, “I’m going drinking with Xu Heng and the others. What? You want to come too?”
Xu Heng and the others had been my close friends since university. They were a bit wild, but they had never crossed any lines.
But Lin Muyao always felt they were a bad influence on me and constantly urged me to stay away from them.
Sure enough, the moment she heard Xu Heng’s name, she frowned.
“Why do you need to see them? You know I don’t like them, yet you still—”
“They’re my friends. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean I have to hate them too.”
For the first time, I shut her down directly.
She was stunned.
Without another word, I got into my car and drove away.
Xu Heng and the guys were already waiting at our usual spot.
The moment I arrived, they poured me a drink and teased, “Wow, did your wife finally let you out?”
I downed my drink in one go and chuckled bitterly. “There’s hope for me. We’re getting a divorce.”
They were all stunned. “What?!”
After I explained, they were furious on my behalf.
Xu Heng looked at me seriously and asked, “So what’s your plan now?”
