Chapter 260: Chapter 260: The Risks of New Technology

Without disturbing Su Lei, He Kui spent a brief, warm moment with her before leaving early the next morning for May City. The city was tranquil as always, an unbroken calm that made it seem disconnected from the brutal conflicts unfolding on Earth. But that was precisely what the two factions wanted—keeping the war far from their homeland. For He Kui, as long as the flames of war didn't reach PLANT, he was safe.

He Kui arrived at the conference venue under bright, clear skies and soon spotted the tall, imposing figure of Durandal, who greeted him with a welcoming smile.

"Mr. Durandal, it's good to see you here," He Kui greeted.

"Yes, and thank you for the introduction, Director He."

"Oh, it's nothing; your expertise speaks for itself," He Kui replied smoothly.

With a smile, Durandal joked, "Are you complimenting yourself, Director He?"

"Not at all," He Kui replied, chuckling. Both men were seasoned conversationalists, and their rapport made it seem like they'd known each other for years.

Durandal then introduced several experts from the medical engineering field of February City. Each of them, whether gray-haired or sharp-eyed with youthful energy, nodded in greeting as He Kui approached and extended a friendly bow.

The collaborative project between February City's medical engineering sector and May City's robotics team had ambitious goals. He Kui's role involved developing high-precision sensory systems for nanorobots capable of DNA-level molecular scanning. The nanorobots would need to specifically bind with DNA molecules to identify and scan nucleotide sequences. For such precise interactions, gene experts were essential.

The plan was for the nanobots to locate damaged or mutated gene fragments and identify them through comparative analysis, similar to the CRISPR-Cas9 system from He Kui's original world. But by integrating intelligent nanorobots, the technology would become significantly more precise and efficient, minimizing the off-target effects that had plagued traditional gene-editing techniques.

"It's an honor to collaborate with you, Director He," one of the older experts said, shaking He Kui's hand enthusiastically.

These were veterans of the field, many of them former employees of Mendel, recruited by PLANT with generous offers. Among them were both medical researchers and experts who had been instrumental in creating Coordinators, each bringing valuable experience.

He Kui's technological advancements could change everything. These experts understood this better than anyone—an editing tool capable of altering genes postnatally could revolutionize medicine, potentially curing congenital diseases, accelerating recovery from injuries, and even catalyzing regenerative abilities.

"Thank you all for your support," He Kui replied, bowing slightly.

He had deliberately downplayed his knowledge in genetics, choosing to keep his qualifications hidden. This project had to progress on his terms and at his pace. Right now, transforming Naturals into Coordinators postnatally was out of reach, and He Kui intended to keep it that way. The release of such technology would spark another wave of technological revolutions and potentially reignite social and racial tensions, placing him at the epicenter of the resulting chaos.

"We've reviewed your friend's case," said one of the experts, a distinguished elder known as Dr. Xiang, who had once mentored Professor Halberton at Mendel.

"Oh, really?" He Kui responded with a humble nod.

"The main challenges are not only gene-targeted therapy but also restoring functionality to neural cells. To restore your friend's sight, every component of the visual pathway would need to function properly," Dr. Xiang explained. "Even if we correct the specific pathogenic targets, the photoreceptors in her retina have already atrophied severely, causing irreversible functional damage."

"Is there any way to address that?" He Kui asked, feigning uncertainty.

"Certainly," Dr. Xiang replied with surprising ease. "One option is to introduce a gene that encodes ion channels into surviving non-photoreceptive retinal cells, reactivating their ability to detect light. Alternatively, we could activate regenerative genes, promoting the regrowth of photoreceptors."

"I understand. We'll give it our best shot," He Kui answered, his words laden with cautious optimism.

Restoring sight by inducing cellular regeneration could significantly extend lifespans. Yet, even if this breakthrough was within reach, He Kui was not eager to bring it forward hastily. For now, enabling nerve regeneration or limb regeneration would already be seen as a medical marvel.

Dr. Xiang nodded approvingly. "Having the intention is good."

After making his introductions and mingling with the gathered experts, He Kui noticed that Hoas and the engineering team had also arrived.

"This is Hoas, the lead engineer of our team," He Kui introduced, allowing Hoas to greet the experts.

Shortly afterward, the office doors opened, and in walked Amalfie, along with Dart Elsman, the representative from February City and an executive of PLANT. Elsman, with pale skin and golden waves of hair, carried an air of reserved authority that contrasted sharply with his son, Diego.

Amalfie and Elsman took seats at the front of the tiered lecture hall, each sitting in their respective city's designated section, while May City and February City representatives were seated on opposite sides. After everyone settled, Amalfie addressed the group.

"As you all know, the significance of this project cannot be overstated," he began. "If we succeed, we'll drastically reduce casualties among our soldiers and save countless lives. I hope you'll all work under Director He's guidance to bring this project to fruition."

The room erupted in applause, jolting He Kui slightly. He was still processing the brutal battles on Earth, and the contrast of this setting made him feel momentarily out of place.

"Perhaps I should check in on Panama afterward," he mused as he prepared himself for his turn to speak.

Standing before the gathered audience, He Kui addressed the crowd. "Thank you for your trust. I'll do everything in my power to ensure PLANT's vision is realized as quickly as possible. With this technology, we'll aim to restore the health of our soldiers and citizens alike."

He Kui concluded with a bow, and another round of applause filled the room. Unbeknownst to most present, a technology poised to reshape the world order had just been secretly launched within the Hailan Design Bureau.
