Chapter 520: Picnic
(From Blue's Perspective)
"So, this little thing will call you mother?" Abel, the son of the duke and the duchess asked. It had been a long time since I had met him and his sister Athena last. Today, Iris, the duchess and my dear friend, brought both of them here. She was also meeting Dion for the first time.
"Yes, but not right away," I said.
"I know. I am not a kid, Blue," he said.
"Is this a way to talk to the Queen, Abel?" Iris scolded him who just shrugged.
"Blue said it's okay to call her by her name."
"Not in front of others, though," Athena said. It looked like she had grown so much in such a small time, however, not as much as Abel.
Abel's height was the same as mine now. He was growing up too fast. Dem said he would even surpass the duke in height.
Because my mood was not good these days, Dem thought it would be a good idea to go on a picnic. However, at the last moment, there was the need for a meeting because of the death of one of the Counts and there was a problem about who would be the next head. I would never join such dull meetings, but one of us had to. Dem also hated them, but he would not make me do something I did not want to.
So, he joined and called Iris to spend some time with me.
Iris agreed almost immediately because she was very excited to meet Dion. Ruby had also come with us.
The picnic spot was a spot near a fountain. We thought the kids would like to swim, but since the beginning, they sat on both sides of me, to take a look at the baby in my arms. Abel acted uninterested, but I saw him taking sneaky and curious looks at Dion.
"Really, Dion looks so much like His Majesty. It's almost like…"
"… he has given birth to him," I finished for Iris. "I know. He looks too much like Dem."
"He is the calmest kid I have ever seen," Perita said from her spot. "I thought now that there will be a child near, I would have to bring earplugs with me, however, he is really quiet."
"Children are supposed to cry," Iris said. "But he really is very calm."
"Doesn't he disturb you at night at all?" Ruby asked. "You still have eyebags, after all."
"I have trouble sleeping properly. But not because of Dion. Dion doesn't cry much, even at night. Usually, it's Dem who wakes up first whenever Dion makes small noises when he is hungry. It's kind of like cats purring."
"Have you tried the herbal tea I have sent you?" Iris asked. After I mentioned about my sleeping problem in a letter, she sent me herbal tea.
"I did. But I think I will need something stronger," I said. "Thanks for the tea though. It tastes really unique but good."
Athena poked Dion's chubby cheeks and giggled when he yawned. Evan always said he found his yawning cute. Well, it was truly too cute.
"Actually, it did not help with the duke's insomnia either. But we never know what will work on who. That's why I sent it to you," Iris said.
"The duke has insomnia?" I asked.
"All his life, he suffered from it. But after the war, he can't sleep at all," she said.
"Do all the people who went to the war suffer from insomnia?" Ruby asked.
"Luc too?"
"He keeps walking around the room, opens one window, then closes it, and tried to flip the pages of a book without making any noise so I won't wake up," Ruby said, shaking her head. "He will sleep for one or two hours, then will wake up, and then after a while, sleep again and then wake up. Every night, the same thing happens."
Maybe it was the war. Killing people should not be easy, except for some people. The screaming, the blood, the brutality, and the guilty consciousness ate people from the inside. Even though we won, the price was all the sleepless nights, all the nightmares, and all the guilty thoughts.
Dem said the same thing once. When he first started to go to war, he could not sleep at night. He would feel like someone was creeping up on him to kill him in his sleep. And even if he managed to fall asleep, he would sometimes see the people he killed. He did not feel remorse, but the noisy dreams did not let him sleep.
Now, it did not affect him much, but, he said he still dreamed of the exact moment when an arrow pierced his left eye.
"War is never easy," I said.
"Especially after two of the wars, one after another with so little time in between," Iris said. "I still remember how the duke had to leave hastily. Thankfully, Blue had suspected something like that to happen and we had preparation beforehand. You have too brave, Blue. I cannot imagine doing that, especially not after…"
"It just seems so, but when the time comes, when you are desperate, you just automatically do it," I chuckled. "It seems impossible to me now too. Time always changes everything."
"Who is the head of the dark mages anyway? Is it someone more powerful than you?" Abel asked.
"Maybe. Who knows?" I muttered.
"At least, he is not a threat anymore," Ruby said and added, "for now."
Not many people knew that the leader of the dark mages was none other than my father and also the black lord that some thought did not exist. If people found out, it would be chaos. I could only imagine what would happen if they knew the legends they talked about were real and one of them was alive as well. What if Moon Goddess was alive too?- would be a general question.
She was alive. She was immortal after all. Azure said so many times. I sometimes wondered if she was seeing all of it. Since Azure was related, she must.
'Werewolves are the creation of the Moon Goddess and the black lord, not their children," I reminded myself once more. 'So, no, you are not committing incest.'
"Dion's hair is too dark," Athena said.
"His Majesty's hair is really dark. No wonder there," Iris said. "Athy, did you wash your hands?"
Athena grinned guiltily. Iris took her near the water to wash her hands. Her dyed red hair was tied into a ponytail. Our little Athena was like an angel. She was getting more and more beautiful each day.
"I thought you would divorce His Majesty and I will marry you," Abel said as soon as Iris was away from us. I was sure she still could hear us. Werewolves.
Ruby snorted on her tea and Perita choked on air. My son somehow found all of the noise very funny and was laughing, for the very first time. I was not sure what to do. From on point, Dion had just laughed for the first time. And then again, a boy was telling me that he wanted to marry me after I divorced my husband.
"Why did you think I would divorce my husband, Abel? I don't think you have seen anything that can make you think so," I asked him.
"I just wished for it," he said, looking at his tea.
"… Did you have a crush on me?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"I am an old woman, though."
"You are just a few years older than me."
"And I literally have a son who can be your brother."
"That time, you didn't."
"Abel, it is not possible. I am the friend of your mother."
"I could marry you still. You are not old, Blue," he said. "But well, it looks like it is truly impossible now. So, I am trying to shake this feeling off."
The whole remaining time had been very odd and awkward. Iris was angry and horrified but did not say anything in front of us. However, I was sure Abel was going to get an ear full after leaving.
"When I was a kid, I had a crush on this forty-something man because he was handsome. It's a memory now and it embarrasses me how weird I had been," Ruby said. She was supposed to have dinner with us, as Dem would join with Luc after another meeting. People wanted to meet me in the meetings, but I did not like meetings too much and tried to avoid them as much as I could.
Dem said I could do it, as it might work as an advantage. The less people would see me, the more curious they would get.

"It always works if you make a grand entrance," he had said.
Ruby was playing with Dion like she and Luc always did whenever they came over. They absolutely loved Dion. Luc was even trying to make him say his name first. Dem would grumble, "He is just one month old. Are you a donkey or what?"
"You look pretty shocked," she said.
"Are you not?" I asked.
"Not entirely. I always thought that kid had a crush on you. When you are a kid, especially a teenager, you just fall for anyone all of a sudden," she said. "Did you never?"
I shook my head. "Never."
"Good for the pure souls who could not make Your Highness fall for them," she said. "His Highness has fewer people to worry about."
"Why? Even if that was true… Does Luc worry about that?"
"No, of course not. He is not really the jealous type," she shrugged.
'Weird. How can someone not be jealous at all?'
