Chapter 12: CHAPTER 12
Elisa
I dropped down from our luxurious Mercedes-Benz. I looked up in amazement at the Langston tower. The sun rays bounced off the clean glass, reflecting a beautiful view. I adjusted the hem of my skirt as I strode into the building. I was respectably welcomed by the staff. After the news of our engagement, I was treated with honor and fawned over anytime I came to visit Victor.
"Good day, Miss Harper." They all bowed in sync. I nodded in approval as I walked to his office. A wave of pride washed over me receiving that much attention, like the wife of a prominent figure. Victor is among the most popular people in the city, and associating with my family has boosted both our business and family image. This made my mother Elena Harper to be fond of him.
Just as I approached his office, I felt a shiver run through my spine. I squinted and saw two men coming out of his office. One was a burly man with tattoos and dressed in black, while the other had a familiar look. He wore simple clothes and looked ordinary, but he had a domineering aura about him. He had a chiseled face, broad frame, and was athletic built. He had this element of freshness about him.
"Nate?" I called out. He had a dark glint in his eyes as he gazed at me. I shuddered and bit my lips. I felt a pang of guilt. Since after the trial, I made no effort to reach out to him. Even after 5 years, I only saw him briefly at the engagement party. There was something different about him. He looked more confident and charismatic.
"Good day, Miss Harper. I'm Dominic. I came for your engagement party." The burly man extended his hand to shake mine. I snapped back quickly and cupped his hands back. I forced a smile at him and quickly returned my gaze to Nikolas.
"What are you doing here, Nikolas?" I asked with a confused look. I always avoided prying on Victor's associates and business. But seeing Nate today piqued my curiosity.
"We had to discuss a new contract from Imperial Construction." He grinned as he told me. I gasped in awe after hearing him.
"Cough... we will be on my way, Miss Harper. Have a good day." The burly man nervously greeted. I slightly nodded in approval as he tugged Nate by his shirt, and they walked away. Nate had an indifferent look on his face like he had just seen a stranger. I felt a thud in my throat.
I regained my composure and moved to Victor's office. His secretary, Janice, bowed to me respectfully as I entered.
"Hello, darling." Victor stood up while I approached him. I pressed my lips against his as we embraced tightly. I sat down opposite him as he offered me a drink.
"I just saw Nate and some guy in black walking out of your office," I said with a puzzled look. Victor shot a glare at me as he offered me a glass.
"Nate surprisingly brought me the contract from Imperial Construction." His demeanor changed when mentioning Nate's name. I knew it stirred up memories between them, so I decided to avoid asking further.
After we were done chatting, I greeted him and went home. I was pondering why Nate would bring such a huge contract to Victor after all the issues with the trial and prison sentence. I regained my composure as I returned home.
I met my mother cutting the edges in her rose garden in the mansion. The floral arrangement gave it an elegant look.
"I'm home, Mum." I gently kissed her on the cheeks. She let out a 'hmph' response as she continued indulging in her rose trimming.
"How are the wedding preparations going with Victor?" She asked in a sharp tone. Since the engagement party, Elena has started making arrangements for the wedding. She wanted to invite all the VIP families in the city. I rolled my eyes as I found a chair to sit down.
"We just did the engagement party, Victor and I don't want to rush things." I pouted. She shot a glare at me and continued focusing on her garden.
"I met Nate in Victor's office today," I said in a hoarse voice. Elena's eyes widened in awe as she glanced at me.
"What is that shameless ex-son-in-law doing in Victor's office? I hope he's not trying to cause more trouble for him?" She said in a condescending tone.
I felt a lump in my throat. Both she and Nate never got along, no matter how he tried to please her. She insisted we get a divorce immediately after he was sentenced.
"He said he was the one who got the Imperial Construction contract for Victor," I said in a calm tone.
Elena gasped in awe. "How will that useless ex-son-in-law have access to those powerful people? Even Victor couldn't get it himself. I heard the owner is a multi-billionaire. How will that low-life urchin get close to someone like that?" Elena grunted. I let out a deep sigh as I also pondered on Nate's new transformation.
