Chapter 86: 86: The Beauty God Freya
Upon hearing the news, Kevin's face immediately fell. His gaze darted around the room, searching for a savior.
Slude, noticing his desperation, crossed her arms and said with a smirk, "Lord Balder just left to meet with Lord Hoder. If nothing unexpected happens, they're probably at Fenrir's residence today."
Kevin groaned dramatically, clutching his head. "I've been abandoned to the mercy of a husky! And now Freya's waiting to eat me alive!"
Slude chuckled at his antics. "Relax. Queen Frigga has already warned Lady Freya not to use her full charm on you like last time."
Kevin sighed with relief, but Slude wasn't finished. "However, Queen Frigga also said that she wouldn't cast spells to protect you anymore. And... you're forbidden from using runes to resist Lady Freya's charm."
"What?!" Kevin nearly jumped out of his seat, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"Her reasoning is simple," Slude continued calmly. "Lady Frigga believes it's time you adapted to Freya's charm. Once you do, no one in the Nine Realms will be able to charm you again."
"Adapt?!" Kevin looked utterly betrayed. "Do you even understand the charm of the goddess of beauty? Do you think I'm some kind of saint?"
"Don't worry," Slude said, patting his shoulder with mock sympathy. "Lady Balder mentioned that if Freya successfully seduces you, she'll have Fenrir bite both of you."
"I..." Kevin's mouth twitched. His expression was caught between indignation and resignation. "I have some strong words for this situation, but I'll keep them to myself."
Despite his protests, Kevin had no choice. After finishing breakfast, he trudged toward Freya's residence with all the enthusiasm of a man walking to his execution.
Slude accompanied him, barely suppressing her amusement at his theatrics.
As they entered Freya's garden, Kevin immediately spotted her sitting on the stone steps. She was breathtaking, her beauty radiant under the golden sunlight. Her gray hair cascaded down her back like a silver waterfall, and her gown shimmered faintly, as if woven from moonlight.
In her delicate hand sat a small bird.
Kevin blinked, recognizing the bird. "Neil?"
Neil glanced at Kevin with an expression of pure exasperation.
"Why are you here?" Kevin asked, genuinely confused.
Neil let out a small chirp, a mixture of frustration and resignation. It was as if she was trying to say, Why do you think I'm here? You've left me stranded for two days!
"Ahem," Slude coughed lightly, a rare flicker of guilt in her voice. "It seems that Neil has been here with Lady Freya since the day before yesterday."
Kevin looked horrified. "Neil! You were held hostage?!"
Before Neil could express her outrage, Freya stood, her movements fluid and graceful. Her lips curved into a smile as she addressed Kevin in a voice as smooth as silk.
"Kevin..." Freya began, her tone laced with just the right amount of sweetness to send shivers down his spine. "You've kept me waiting. Don't you think that's terribly rude?"
Kevin's back stiffened. Her voice alone was enough to cloud his mind.
As Freya stepped closer, Neil flew from her hand to perch on Slude's shoulder, as if sensing danger. Freya's presence was intoxicating, a mixture of elegance and allure that seemed almost supernatural.
She reached out, her fingers lightly brushing against Kevin's cheek. His knees felt weak, and his mind fogged over.
"Welcome, Kevin," Freya whispered, her lips dangerously close to his ear. "Tamer of giant wolves, hero who killed the mountain giant..."
Kevin's breath hitched, and he felt the blood rush to his face.
Slude, who had been silently watching, finally intervened. She stepped forward, placing herself between Kevin and Freya.
"Lady Freya," Slude said respectfully, bowing slightly. "Please forgive Kevin's hesitation. He's still adjusting to his newfound... reputation."
Freya's enchanting smile didn't waver. She glanced at Slude, amused by her protectiveness. "Oh? Has he not yet embraced the titles the bards sing of him?"
Slude frowned slightly. "Titles?"
Freya chuckled softly and gestured for one of her Valkyries to explain.
"Yes," the Valkyrie said with a grin. "Across the Nine Realms, bards are singing about the man who tamed Fenrir and defeated the mountain giant Shaki to claim his daughter, the goddess of ice and snow, Skadi."
"Wait—what?!" Kevin blurted out, stepping out from behind Slude.
"Yes," Freya said with a twinkle in her eye. "You've become quite famous, Kevin. The bards' songs even suggest that your actions were motivated by love. After all, isn't it romantic to defeat a giant to win his daughter's hand?"
"That's... that's a complete fabrication!" Kevin exclaimed, his face turning red.
"Really?" Slude asked, her tone dripping with mock skepticism. "Can you honestly say Skadi wasn't part of the reason you took on Shaki?"
Kevin glared at her, his indignation palpable. "Stop making things up!"
Freya watched their exchange with quiet amusement. Her gaze lingered on Kevin, noting his flustered demeanor. For once, the mortal who had always seemed so immune to her charm was at her mercy.
"Don't worry, Kevin," Freya said, her voice a purr. "I find your innocence... refreshing."
Kevin stiffened again, realizing he had wandered back into Freya's trap.
"You two chat!" he suddenly exclaimed, taking a step back. "I, uh, just remembered—there's a warrior I promised to spar with. Really important. Gotta go!"
Before anyone could stop him, Kevin turned and bolted, leaving Slude and Freya behind.
Slude sighed, turning to Freya. "Lady Freya, perhaps it's best to let him be for today."
Freya smirked, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Oh, I don't mind. This is much more fun than I expected."
As Kevin disappeared into the distance, his voice echoed faintly through the garden.
"Why am I always the victim?!"
Freya and Slude exchanged a look, the former smiling mischievously while the latter simply shook her head.
Kevin had survived, but just barely. Freya's charm was a force to be reckoned with, but so too was his ability to flee when things became overwhelming. As he ran, Kevin couldn't help but wonder if the bards' songs about him would ever include the less glamorous details of his life in Asgard.
