Chapter 85: 85: What's the harm in being in a special place?
"What do you think?"
Odin's voice broke the tranquil silence as he descended from the High Throne alongside Loki, the god of trickery. The two gods walked together through the grand halls of Valhalla, their footsteps echoing off the polished floors.
Though seemingly vague, Odin's question carried layers of meaning. Loki, well-versed in Odin's mannerisms, chuckled knowingly after a moment of contemplation.
"While we've certainly made our own contributions in shaping the outcome, I doubt either of us could have predicted how things would unfold." Loki smirked. "Whether Kevin's actions were entirely correct or not will take time to reveal. Still, he undeniably changed the fates of Skadi and Shaki."
"Changed the fates?" Odin's lips twitched into a faint smile. "Or perhaps he merely...realigned them?"
"True," Loki conceded with a nod. "The mountain giant Shaki, the warrior of the giant clan, 'died' as was written. And Skadi, the goddess of ice and snow, has joined the Aesir as intended by fate."
"Indeed." Odin stroked his long white beard thoughtfully. "But everything about their paths has shifted. Skadi's life in Asgard will no longer be one of estrangement or silent suffering. Shaki, too, finds a purpose within our realm. What once would have been a tale of tragedy has become something else entirely."
Loki chuckled again, a mischievous gleam in his eyes. "A fine distinction, Odin, but that's what makes it all the more interesting. To the uninformed, it looks like nothing has changed. But to us? The nature of the story itself has been rewritten."
Odin nodded in agreement, his expression both thoughtful and amused.
"This child..." Odin mused, "truly lives up to Scathach's investment. Tell me, Loki, do you think he knows more than he lets on?"
"Such as?"
Odin's single eye twinkled with curiosity. "For instance, does he know of the role he may play in our final fate? He asked Shaki to guard Fenrir, after all."
At this, Loki's ever-present smirk widened. "Who can say?" he said cryptically. "Even you, Allfather, cannot see through his destiny. Perhaps his 'specialness' is simply a result of his circumstances. Or..." Loki paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "Perhaps he is more deliberate than we give him credit for."
Odin chuckled, his laughter deep and resonant. "What's the harm in being a little...special? Perhaps, in this vast and uncertain world, a touch of unpredictability is precisely what we need."
For the first time in years, Odin's laughter echoed through the temple—a sound that seemed to momentarily lighten the burdens of prophecy and foresight.
A few days later, in Bredablik, the resplendent palace of Balder, the god of light, the morning sunlight streamed through the golden-framed windows.
Kevin groaned as the warm rays tickled his face, reluctantly pulling him from a deep slumber.
"Time to get up," a familiar voice chimed, firm yet melodic. Kevin felt a gentle nudge at his shoulder.
"Just a little longer..." Kevin mumbled, turning over and burying his face into the plush pillow.
Slude, the ever-dutiful Valkyrie assigned as Kevin's guardian, sighed but didn't relent. She reached for the quilt and yanked it away, leaving Kevin exposed to the chilly morning air.
"Hey!" Kevin sat up, bleary-eyed, glaring at Slude.
"None of that," Slude said, her tone unwavering. "Up. Now."
Grumbling under his breath, Kevin allowed himself to be pulled out of bed. Slude moved with practiced ease, handing him a neatly folded outfit and helping him get dressed.
"I told you, you don't have to do all this," Kevin muttered as Slude guided him to a golden mirror and began combing his hair.
"I disagree," Slude replied flatly. "You are still mortal, Kevin, and it's my duty as your guardian to ensure your well-being. That includes maintaining your daily routine."
"Come on, I'm not that fragile!" Kevin protested half-heartedly, though he didn't resist as Slude tied his hair into its signature ponytail.
"Besides," she added, a hint of amusement creeping into her voice, "Lord Balder specifically instructed me to take extra care of you. Something about not letting you 'cause unnecessary trouble'."
Kevin groaned, running a hand through his freshly combed hair. "Isn't anyone on my side?"
Slude simply smiled and ushered him to the dining hall, where a hearty breakfast awaited.
As Kevin finished his meal, Slude cleared her throat.
"By the way," she began, her tone casual but her words anything but, "Lady Freya sent a message yesterday."
Kevin froze mid-bite. "...What kind of message?"
Slude's eyes twinkled with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "She said that if you don't visit her today, she'll send someone to capture you."
Kevin groaned, slumping in his chair. "Of course she did."
"I suggest you don't keep her waiting," Slude said, patting Kevin on the shoulder.
"I don't suppose I have a choice, do I?" Kevin muttered, already dreading the encounter.
As Kevin prepared to leave for Freya's palace, he couldn't help but reflect on recent events. Despite the challenges he had faced—and the new ones undoubtedly waiting for him—he felt a strange sense of satisfaction.
The gods' laughter still echoed faintly in his memory, a reminder that even in a world dominated by prophecy and fate, there was room for change, for choice, for something unexpected.
And as he stepped out into the golden light of Asgard, Kevin smiled.
"Special, huh?" he murmured to himself. "I guess I'll take it."
