Chapter 83: 83: has changed
"Lord Loki..."
Ignoring the astonished expressions on Skadi and Shaki's faces, Kevin turned his gaze toward Loki.
Loki, seated casually yet exuding his trademark air of mischief, looked back at Kevin with a quiet nod. "I know the type of contract you're referring to," Loki said, his voice carrying an undertone of intrigue. "But are you absolutely certain you wish to sign such a contract with the ice and snow goddess Skadi, and make Shaki the only person who can dissolve it?"
"I'm certain," Kevin replied, his tone firm yet polite. He smiled faintly and bowed slightly in thanks. "Thank you, Lord Loki..."
"Wait a minute!"
A chorus of protests rang out simultaneously, startling everyone in the hall. The three voices—belonging to Skadi, Balder, and Slude—were laced with equal parts alarm and confusion.
The trio exchanged brief glances, their initial surprise giving way to a shared urgency. Without a moment's hesitation, they turned back toward Kevin and Loki, their gazes sharp and questioning.
"Life contract?" Skadi asked, her voice tinged with disbelief. "What life contract are you talking about?"
"A literal life contract," Loki interjected smoothly, a glint of amusement in his emerald eyes.
His explanation, however, only deepened the tension in the room. "As per Kevin's request," Loki began, "I will slightly modify the standard terms of the life contract.
"Once the contract is established, even if Kevin suffers an injury or dies, the ice and snow goddess Skadi will remain unharmed. However..." Loki's wicked smile widened, drawing all eyes to him. "If Skadi is injured or dies, Kevin will bear the exact degree of harm inflicted upon her."
A stunned silence followed Loki's words, the gravity of the proposal sinking in.
"That's not all," Loki continued, clearly savoring the reactions around him. He ignored Kevin's frantic gestures—an obvious plea to stop revealing so much. Instead, Loki leaned forward slightly, his voice carrying an almost conspiratorial tone.
"According to Kevin's request, only one person will have the authority to dissolve this contract: Shaki, the mountain giant and father of Skadi."
Gasps rippled through the Silver Hall, accompanied by the sound of chairs scraping as some gods and Valkyries shifted in their seats.
Kevin felt the weight of countless stares on him. He stood straighter, adjusting his posture instinctively under the scrutiny.
"It's really not that dramatic," Kevin mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's just a safety measure... I mean, I'll be heading back to the Irene Continent eventually. This contract is only valid while I'm here."
Kevin's attempt to downplay the situation did little to ease the escalating reactions.
"Not dramatic?" Queen Frigga's melodic voice cut through the tension, a hint of amusement laced in her words. She cast a knowing look at her husband Odin, her elegant demeanor unshaken.
"Even if it's just symbolic," Frigga said, "it's rare for anyone to willingly enter into such a contract. Kevin, do you truly understand the weight of your actions?"
Before Kevin could respond, Freya, the goddess of beauty, stood and made her presence known. Her dazzling smile carried an edge of mischief, her voice honeyed yet playful.
"If Kevin is willing to sign such a contract," Freya said, her golden hair catching the sunlight, "then I wouldn't mind being the one he chooses. Kevin, would you consider entering into a life contract with me instead?"
"Don't even think about it!"
Balder stepped forward, her fiery gaze locking onto Freya. Her voice carried an uncharacteristic edge, startling those who knew her as the kind and gentle goddess of light.
"This is my brother," Balder said firmly, placing herself between Freya and Kevin. "Stop trying to take advantage of him!"
Freya's melodious laughter echoed in response. "Oh, Balder, you're so protective. It's almost cute."
The playful exchange came to an abrupt halt when Shaki, who had remained uncharacteristically quiet, finally spoke.
"Odin," he said, his deep voice laced with skepticism, "what is your true intention behind this arrangement? Why would the Aesir accept me, a giant, even under these conditions?"
Before Odin could answer, Thor, ever straightforward, stepped forward. "It's simple," Thor said. "This kid—Kevin—took all the heat upon himself."
Thor glanced at Kevin, a mixture of admiration and exasperation on his face.
"When we first discussed 'killing' you, Shaki, we knew it could provoke a war with the Frost Giants. It was a gamble we weren't willing to take. But Kevin convinced us otherwise."
Odin nodded, stroking his white beard thoughtfully. "Indeed. Kevin assured me he could handle the consequences, with Loki's support."
Shaki exhaled slowly, his gaze shifting to Kevin. The mountain giant's expression was unreadable, but his silence spoke volumes.
Kevin swallowed hard, suddenly aware of the weight of Shaki's stare. "I didn't do it alone," he said, his voice quieter than before.
"If my father, Luger, wasn't the next God-King and the one who killed the King of the Deep-Sea Giants, I wouldn't have been able to shoulder this burden."
"And yet you still chose to do so," Freya said, her smile softening as she regarded Kevin. "You've made quite a name for yourself, Kevin. In fact, you're now famous—or infamous—across the Nine Realms."
Kevin winced. "It's not the kind of fame I was aiming for..."
Shaki closed his eyes, his thoughts racing. When he opened them again, there was a clarity that hadn't been there before.
"Kevin," Shaki said, his voice steady, "do you swear to uphold this contract, no matter the consequences?"
"I do," Kevin replied without hesitation.
"And you, Skadi?" Shaki turned to his daughter, his gaze softening.
"Yes, Father," Skadi said, her voice trembling slightly. "I trust Kevin."
After a long pause, Shaki nodded. "Then so be it."
Odin stood, his presence commanding the attention of all. "It is decided," he declared. "The life contract between Kevin and Skadi will be established, with Shaki as its sole guardian."
The hall erupted in murmurs, but Odin raised a hand to silence them.
"Let this be a testament to Kevin's courage," Odin said, his voice resonating. "And a reminder that even in the face of great odds, miracles are possible."
As Kevin exchanged a glance with Skadi, her lips curved into a small smile. Though the challenges ahead were uncertain, one thing was clear: Kevin's actions had not only changed the course of his own fate but also forged an unbreakable bond with the Aesir.
