Chapter 82: 82: Life Contract

Kevin wasn't lying. If he had witnessed the sheer chaos and intensity of the battle last night—Shaki fighting off Valkyries, Tyr, and Fenrir's clone—he might not have dared to intervene so decisively.

Reflecting on the events, Kevin understood that even as an observer, he was wholly unqualified to participate in a battle of such magnitude.

When he confessed this aloud, accompanied by a bitter smile, the gods exchanged glances before Thor erupted into booming laughter that echoed through the Silver Hall.

Odin, Loki, Queen Frigga, and other gods joined in, their mirth shaking the hall's solemn air.

Among those present, only two figures were unimpressed: Shaki, who stared in bewilderment, and Slude, the Valkyrie standing among her sisters. She rolled her eyes and muttered to herself.

"I believed his lies," she said quietly, glancing at Kevin.

Most would assume Kevin's reluctance was rooted in fear, but Slude knew better. She had spent enough time with him to understand his personality. If given the chance, he would dive headfirst into chaos again—because that was the kind of person Kevin was.

"What's so funny?" Shaki grumbled, his brows furrowed as he glanced at the laughing gods. His gaze shifted to Kevin, now smiling faintly. "And what nonsense are you spouting, human?"

Skadi, standing beside her father, finally broke her silence. Her voice was soft but firm.

"Father," she began, her stunning features illuminated by the sunlight streaming through the temple's tall windows. Her amethyst eyes glimmered with resolve. "Kevin and I… we killed you."

Shaki froze, his gaze snapping toward his daughter.

"We killed you—the mountain giant Shaki, the warrior of the giant clan," Skadi continued, lowering her head. "I… I made this decision without your consent. I'm sorry, Father."

"No," Kevin interjected, shaking his head. "It wasn't Skadi's decision. It was mine."

Shaki's eyes darkened, confusion and anger swirling within them.

"From the moment I arrived in Jotunheim," Kevin explained, "I knew that explaining everything to you wouldn't work. You are too proud, too tied to your identity as a giant warrior. You would never leave, even if it meant sacrificing everything for your daughter."

Kevin's voice softened. "So I sought the help of the gods to 'kill' you—the mountain giant Shaki."

"You…" Shaki began but faltered. He clenched his fists tightly, his pride and identity as a warrior gnawing at him.

Kevin stepped forward, looking Shaki directly in the eye.

"Master Shaki," Kevin said, his voice calm yet firm, "Asgard cannot accommodate the mountain giant Shaki—a warrior who fought against the gods, whose hands are stained with divine blood."

Shaki opened his mouth to retort, but Kevin raised a hand to stop him.

"However," Kevin continued, "Asgard does have need of strong guardians. Two places, in particular, need someone like you: the Eternal Garden of the goddess of youth, Idun, and the residence of Fenrir, the demon wolf that shakes the earth."

Kevin glanced at Idun, who stepped forward with her usual gentle smile.

"The Eternal Garden," Idun explained, "is often threatened by dwarves, monsters, and other creatures. We need someone strong to guard it. If it's you, Shaki, I would gladly welcome you.

"Because I know you are a good father who cherishes his daughter, just as I cherish Sister Skadi."

"Lady Idun…" Skadi whispered, her heart swelling with gratitude.

Kevin smiled. "As for Fenrir," he added, "the demon wolf is my friend. If you vow to protect these two sacred places, you will no longer be seen as a threat but as a guardian of Asgard."

Kevin turned to Odin, who nodded knowingly and addressed the hall.

"Do any of you object to this arrangement?" Odin asked, his commanding voice echoing through the hall.

"No objections," came the unanimous response from the gods and Valkyries, Loki and Thor included.

Shaki looked around, his face unreadable. The hall's mood was solemn yet expectant.

"You see?" Kevin said, turning back to Shaki. "The mountain giant Shaki is already dead. What remains is a father—a father who can choose to stay in Asgard and watch over his daughter."

Shaki's shoulders slumped as he absorbed Kevin's words. The pride that had once defined him felt hollow now, eclipsed by his love for Skadi.

"Father…" Skadi's voice trembled with emotion. She stepped forward, her amethyst eyes pleading.

Shaki sighed deeply. He was about to speak when Kevin interrupted once more.

"Master Shaki," Kevin said, his tone steady and resolute, "If you are still worried about Skadi's future—worried that she may face harm or mistreatment without your sacrifice—then I offer a solution."

Everyone turned to Kevin, their curiosity piqued.

"I am willing to sign a life contract with Skadi," Kevin declared, his voice unwavering.

The hall fell silent. Even Shaki, who had been on the verge of replying, stared at Kevin in stunned disbelief.

"A life contract?" Skadi echoed, her voice barely above a whisper as her gaze locked onto Kevin.

Kevin nodded. "A life contract binds two individuals together, ensuring that one will always protect and support the other. If something happens to Skadi, the contract will demand my life in exchange."

The gods murmured among themselves. Life contracts were rare and binding, a vow stronger than most oaths.

"Kevin…" Shaki began, his voice thick with emotion.

"I'm serious," Kevin said firmly. "This way, you can rest easy, knowing that Skadi will always have someone by her side."

Shaki's gaze shifted between Kevin and Skadi. His daughter's eyes were brimming with hope and affection, while Kevin's were filled with determination.

After a long silence, Shaki sighed and closed his eyes.

"Fine," he said at last. "I swear to protect the Eternal Garden and Fenrir's residence. And I accept the life contract between you and Skadi."

The hall erupted in murmurs, but Odin silenced them with a wave of his hand.

"Then it is decided," Odin declared. "From this day forth, Shaki will serve as a guardian of Asgard, and Kevin will bear the responsibility of the life contract."

Skadi stepped forward, taking Kevin's hands in hers. Her expression was a mixture of gratitude and something deeper, something unspoken.

"Thank you, Kevin," she said softly.

Kevin smiled, his usual playfulness replaced by sincerity. "Anything for you, Skadi."

And with that, a new chapter began.
