Chapter 8: The Last Act Of A Soul Remnant [7]
She silently glided towards Rune and the Human puppy. Hey predatory demeanor was drawn to the full mast. She knew anything less would be discovered by Rune.
She caught sight of them with her keen eyesight. She swayed with the wind. Her intentions was to ambush the duo from behind.
Kay was alert. The moment he came through the wall, every sense on him screamed danger. His instincts told him to run. He was vigilant and tense like a coiled spring.
The forest was unnaturally silent. A calm before a storm. He sped up and caught up with Rune. Just as he was about to say something, he felt his hair stand up on his neck, he felt an approaching menace from his left.
He tucked at Rune's shirt and pointed in the direction Zifara was approaching from. Rune looked into the sky above the tree tops. He felt his friend approaching before he saw her.
Zifara nodded in approvement when she saw the skinny human puppy point in her direction. This puppy's instincts were good. And its gait was not bad too, it does not drum beat the ground. A natural tracker and hunter.
Kay saw a large shadow fly over his head, momentarily blocking the sun and casting everything into dark. The shadow was massive, very big but it passed by silently.
Without the shadow, he wouldn't have known if something had passed by. His brain went into overdrive, trying to remember if he had heard of such a big bird before.
No! This can't be. Even the Silverback gorillas are not this big. No bird could be that big. What was that?
"That is Zifara. Your instincts are good kid. Thanks to you, her ambush failed" Rune patted Kay on the shoulder as he praised him. If it was not for this kid, he would not have known that the Princess was up on her mischievous spree until it was too late.
Her? Zifara? So they know each other!
Kay couldn't help but exclaim in his heart. Just at that moment a shadow came in fast towards them. It was falling like a meteor. Unstoppable. Very powerful. It cleaved the air at such a speed that a vibration preceded its path. Just as it was about to hit the ground, its left wing fully stretched and caught the wind making the dragon brake its speed into a sharp turn. The tail whipped at a tremendous speed towards Rune and Kay.
She rarely used her claws to battle Rune because any mistake on his defence during the combat can mean dismemberment, disfigurement or worse, death.
Rune frowned as he saw the incoming tail. She was showing off. He scooped the kid and jumbled into the air. He kicked the tail beneath him with his right leg and launched himself and Kay towards the dragon's back. He griped the ridge on her back with his free hand to stabilise himself.
Zifara tucked her left wing and made a barrel. She spun through a seven twenty degree barrel. In the first three sixty degree rotation, Rune lost his grip. And in the second rotation, he was launched in the air towards the base of the mountain.
Kay's face was white with fright. A freaking dragon had just attacked them. He had closed his eyes waiting for the devastating blow from the dragon's tail. The next moment, he felt himself flying, then spinning and finally,
boom!
His head rang from the impact. He winced from the pain. He crawled out if Rune's embrace. This powerful Rune had just been thrown away like his strength was nothing. He slowly opened his eyes, wincing at the light.
Finally he opened his eyes only to behold a very large eye in his face. He forgot about his headache and scrambled away.
Where did you get him? She sent a telepathy message to Rune.
On the cliff wall. He replied in amusement. You are scaring him. Move back, away from him. I don't even think if he had ever seen a dragon before. Observed Rune to Zifara through their minds.
" This is Zifara, the Pri...."
"The Master of Rune!" She interjected the introduction. She didn't want the puppy to Kno her real identity.
If word got out that a wild dragon was in existance in the Forbidden Forest, hell will break out. Even though it had been thousands of years since the massacre, they are those who still remember that time through records and folklore. Those who would stop at nothing to get their hands on a pure blooded dragon.
Rune coughed into his fist, masking the jarred introductions.
Kay wasn't fooled in the least. He had already figured that these two were friends on a deeper level. And that Zifara did not want him to know her identity besides her name.
He tilted his head looking at the two powerful beings before him. The village teacher had taught him enough and others to know that dragons were exclusively used as mounts for the kingdoms' knights and by the Imperial bodyguards and knights.
Only nobles could be knights, and one could only be a noble by birth. So, literally, the poor remained poor and the rich continued to be rich through the exploitation of the poor.
Kay thought this Zafira was a rogue. He thought he had offended someone powerful and had ran away. But he couldn't think of anything, let alone someone, who could make Zifara turn tail and run! This matter wasn't as simple as it seems like on the surface.
Kay knelt down and gave the appropriate salutations. These were completely different from the bluff he had made with Rune back in the cave. This time, there was humility, solemnity and sincerity in his voice. He meant every word he uttered.
Zifara smiled knowingly, basking in this rare show of reverence to her being. She side eyed Rune who was busy glaring at this brat with a cold and frosty gaze.
Afterwards, just as Rune was about to take his leave with Kay, something unprecedented happened.
The runes that had appeared at Kay's birth resurfaced.
His forehead and arms were shimmering white. The runes swirled like writhing snakes. Both Zifara and Rune were stunned into silence.
What was this!?
They both thought. This was unprecedented. Questions rose in their hearts. What was with this kid?
What's happening Rue?
I don't know. I just met him this afternoon.
Move back, if something happens to you , you will be done for.
Rune clicked his tongue and moved back.
...
Deep in the mountain, an egg shimmered. Its shell changed from smooth bluish colour to pitch black and then shiny black.
A blue light came out of the egg in a circle. Wherever it touched, runes were left. The light moved away from the center where the egg was etched on a rock pedestal. In no time the whole chamber was glowing blue.
The moment the egg began shimmering, both Zifara and Rune had felt the change because of their connection to the egg.
Kay felt something in the mountain pulling at something within him. He knew that if he didn't move soon, whatever was being pulled would be pulled out of his body.
The pain grew to unbearable heights, he gritted his teeth but eventually screamed. His legs involuntarily moved in the direction of the castle entrance.
Zifa and Rune looked at each other, then at the anguished face of the kid. They did not know what was happening and what to do either.
They silently flowed the already screaming and running kid. At six, his running speed was less than that of Zifara walking.
They entered the mountain and everything turned dark. They filled the twists and turns of the passage that was being filled by Kay.
Rune had enlarged some of the passage ways and rooms to accommodate Zifara. And rye now ,it seems as if this kid was only following the larger passage ways
Where is he going? She thought to herself.
And her heart skipped. No! It can't be! But she could not deny her instincts that were screaming at her. There was only one way to find out, and that was following the kid.
And sure enough, the kid was heading towards the Egg Chamber.
Kay turned a corner without even knowing what he was doing nor where he was going. His body was being controlled by something else. The pain decreased as he got nearer to the source of the pull.
After a few turns here and there, he found himself in front of a chamber which was brightly lit with blue light, and the walls were all etched with gleaming writings that eerily looked familiar, some looked like the ones on his arms.
He entered the room without any ceremony.
