The Forgotten Language

Chapter 7: The Last Act Of A Soul Remnant [6]

Rune felt he wasn't worth the risk. He tried to convey this to Zifara through telepathic means but found out his life force wasn't enough to support even such a trivial matter which, not long ago, he took for granted.

His soul gradually gained vitality while his life force was brightened. His body began paler and paler as the spell progressed. In no time, his body was completely destroyed into star light which Zifara absorbed.

She then merged his soul and his life force using her soul. She broke into sweat. She could feel her life force wasn't enough. If she fails, she was going to create a very powerful dark creature. No! I can't leave behind such a calamity in this world regardless of how much I want to destroy all humanity!

She gritted her teeth some more, then roared into the night sky boosting her confidence.

This human was a powerhouse in his own right. I could have saved more than a hundred humans with my life force. Why did it to have to be him of all the animals around here. She regarded humans as animals, not different from all the other beasts, sentient beasts!

Just after the roar, she burned her spiritual energy, converted it into life force and fed it inot the merging soul and lifeforce of Rune. She could do, the only problem is she might die doing it, she thought. There was no going back, this was an irreversible act. And she wouldn't regret even if she perished. She only felt sad that her race would be no more, vanquished from this world.

Slowly, the spell reached it's pinnacle, the soul and the lifeforce seamlessly blended into one. And the saved soul gave a flash of light then stabilised.

Zifara cut off her life force and retracted her soul power. She breathed a sigh of relief and slumped to the ground with exhaustion. She had succeeded. She had saved her human friend. She couldn't have lived forever alone.

What kind of a master would have let her servant die just like that. Being killed by an unborn dragon! Speaking of which....

The egg gave a soft harm, and then quieted down.

Rune could see everything around him like he still had a body. He observed his surroundings with his soul. It felt no different from when he used his soul back when he had a body. He reformed an illusion of his body. It shimmered into existence. His skin glowed in the darkness.

He walked to the slumped Princess Zifara, he felt his anger rising. What was she thinking, she risked her life for the sake of me! I'm already tired of living. And if she had died, the dragon royal blood would have been lost forever! Idiot! Stupid idiot! Reckless stupid idiot!

He dashed at her tail, jumped up intending to stomp her tail. His feet passed through her tail as if she wasn't there. What!? I'm not solid? His face crunched with frustration.

He walked up to her head. His head was level with her eye. He glared at her in fury.

" What were you thinking? You could have.." " what? I could have what Rune?" She interjected.

Rune stammered. He changed what he wanted to say to " you could have turned me into a monster, and this world knows it doesn't need not even one more monster, and especially not a powerful one like me!" He shouted his frustration at her.

Zifara knew exactly what he wanted to say. And she knew his pride wouldn't allow him to say it in her face. She felt warmth spread in her heart for this Soul in front of her.

Instead, she said " mix your spiritual energy into your illusion to solidify it, you are welcome Rune."

This! Hmm. Rune couldn't even finish his thoughts. She was stubborn and powerful. More so now compared to him. And he had never won a verbal sparing against her. He could only swallow his anger. He cared for her dearly, like a sister he never had.

He clicked his tongue, turned and cautiously walked to the egg. It was pulsating with a blueish light, and there were traces of a gold light that randomly lightedin the shell.

And the most bizarre thing is he could feel a familiarity with it. When he first got here, he had not felt anything. Or maybe it was because he had never gotten the chance to register the feeling before he was attacked.

He touched the smooth surface. It was cool and warm to the touch. What a strange thing. Cool and warm. He felt like protecting it.

Zifara watched the interaction in silence. She had already recovered. When Rune [ she had decided to call Rune's Soul Rune ] had touched the egg, she had felt a connection with both Rune and the egg. Of course, as a dragon, she had always felt a connection with the embryo developing in the egg, but now she could also feel a weak link extending to Rune. It had grown in strength when Rune touched the egg.

She remained silent wanting to see what would happen next. This time she won't let any more harm come to his friend.

Rune didn't feel even the slightest anger nor hatred towards Zifara. He knew what happened was an accident. And the spell that Zifara had casted showcased her innocence.

Under his gaze, the egg gradually deemed until it was an ordinary dragon egg. He looked at Zifara, and she just closed her eyes as if she had not seen him.

He went and sat leaning at her smooth foreleg shoulder scales. Dragon and a human soul sat in silence. It wasn't awkward. It was peaceful and in contentment. Each basking in the comfort brought by the presence of the other. For now, they only had each other. And that was enough to deter almost everyone, beast and kingdoms in this part of Vernite.

After some deliberation, they decided to keep the egg in Rune's domain. The Mountain Castle.

And since then, the egg would occasionally pulsate in blue light energy. As far as Zifara was concerned, the occurrences were random.

...

And now Rune had brought back a human puppy. Zifara curiously watched them approach with her soul power.

There was just something peculiar with this human puppy. She couldn't pin point what it was, but it was there. Only if she could put her finger on it.

Let me go and give them a teethy smile! She mischievously thought to herself.

She jumped, spread her wings and glided towards her human preys.
