Chapter 29 - Post-apocalyptic Literature 10
Yu Huan looked up at the chocolate and biscuits falling from the sky, lost in thought.
Zhang Ni was driving very slowly, as usual.
Song Qi, who never said much, looked at Sheng Lang coldly to see what she was up to.The most noisy one, Shan Que, was actually not saying anything at the moment, as if the yelling about the slow speed had been someone else’s illusion.
Occasionally, he would lean against the car and look behind, not knowing what he wanted to see.
Sheng Lang looked away without a smile.
The car stopped.
Lin Qi felt restless and spoke up again: ‘Why don’t I do it?’
‘It’s fine, I’m just a little hot. The engine gets hot after driving for a long time, so let’s stop for a while,’ Zhang Ni said.
‘Yes, I want to get out and get some fresh air too!’ Shan Que responded, her voice full of excitement.Sang Man didn’t say anything, but he had already gone straight downstairs.
These twin brothers…
Zhang Ni hesitated, opened the car door, and thought that it would be hard to find the little zombie if there were too many people, so she decided to wait until they returned.
Song Qi looked at his white trainers and didn’t move.
‘It really followed us,’ Shan Que said in surprise as he hid in the grass.
The little zombie was sitting on the ground with its legs wrapped around its body, panting heavily while slowly peeling the gold foil from the chocolate.
Chasing them must have tired it out.
After hearing a noise, it was nervous for a moment, its ears standing up like a little mouse. When it realised it was them, it calmed down and lowered its eyes to peel the chocolate carefully. It even moved back a little silently to make some space and seemed to be inviting them to sit.
‘Are you peeling it for me?’ Shan Que teased the little zombie.
But the little zombie actually solemnly put the chocolate into Shan Que’s hands once it had torn off all the gold foil.
“You really gave it to me,” Shan Que said, holding the chocolate in the palm of his hand. He had a surprised smile on his face.
Sang Man’s eyelashes moved slowly as he stared at the little zombie’s hand.
Yu Huan felt something, and quickly peeled another one. As soon as he had done that, Sang Man’s white fingers were sticking out.
What a good manners.
Yu Huan gave him the chocolate, but she didn’t want to give him the one she was peeling for herself. She pretended not to notice, turned slightly to face the others, and peeled the next one for herself.
The twin brothers crouched down and played with her for a while, quickly returning to avoid arousing suspicion and putting the little zombie in danger.
The weeds in front of her swayed slightly.
Yu Huan was so focused on eating the chocolate that she did not notice them. But then she saw a pair of white trainers.
They were a clean white, hardly stained with any dust.
Yu Huan looked up and saw someone she had never seen before. He was wearing a beige cardigan that made him look smart and elegant, and he was leaning over, hands on his knees, looking at her.
“So the secret they were hiding was you,” Song Qi said softly.
His hands were very pale and thin, and you could see the veins on the back of his long, slender hands like branches of a river: clear and beautiful.
Another strange person…
Yu Huan hadn’t finished defining this person when the person reached out their hand and, very naturally, scratched her chin.
‘Ah,’ the little zombie said, his eyes blank.
‘That’s a good boy,’ Song Qi thought back to a golden gradient he had kept before the end of the world. It had a very good temperament, was gentle and affectionate, had a round head, and spent the whole day wagging its tail and wandering around.
Its clean clothes often had plum blossom prints on them. But then, his cousin took it away.
‘Why is he scratching me? He has no manners at all…’ Yu Huan said, sounding unhappy.
‘Exactly, the zombie is also a human, how dare he?’The system agreed with her, while looking for the right character in the script, ‘There’s no one here, really… His name is Song Qi?!’
Eager to try to scare him, Yu Huan started, but the system stopped her in a panic:
‘Let’s be patient, host. Song Qi is very dangerous. Don’t let his appearance fool you. He is actually in a very unhealthy state of mind. He played a big role in Lu Mingzhang’s scheme…’
The little zombie, who had just been about to let out a breath, suddenly stopped moving and hid behind him, rubbing her soft face against the back of his hand.
She had realised that he was not simple. Many people couldn’t see his inner being, but a little zombie could.
Song Qi laughed and touched her face.
He put his hand back in his pocket, turned around, and left a slender and tall figure in the background, saying, ‘Let’s go.’
This person is really hard to understand.
Zhang Ni finally found a chance to come down alone, and after quickly checking on Yu Huan’s condition, she went back in after a short while.
‘Zhang Ni,’ Song Qi suddenly said, ‘is there any more cranberry bread?’
Song Qi was unusual in asking for things, so Zhang Ni was surprised as she took the cranberry bread out of the space. ‘You’re hungry too? Hey, it seems you didn’t get enough to eat at the previous meal.’
Yu Huan picked up another pack of cranberry bread. The jam was sweet, the bread was soft and smelt nice, and tasted really good.
The system felt that something was a bit strange, but it couldn’t work out what. Luckily, the man had never been seen. After Yu Huan followed the car to B City, everything was sorted.
Just as she was saying this, the car stopped again nearby.
Yu Huan found a place where she could block herself off and collapsed, chatting with the system:
‘I’ll tell you, I’m used to lying down when the car stops now. The places I choose are both comfortable and hidden…’
But just as she was saying this, she heard a noise – it sounded like a lot of footsteps coming very close.
‘Jiang Yuhuan?’ Lin Qi was shocked and recognised the zombie.
Yu Huan: …
Why did it come so fast?
‘You, you’re really infected.’Lin Qi didn’t know what to say. “How are you feeling? Can you still understand what I’m saying?”
Yu Huan hesitated for a moment before slowly nodding.
She had been able to speak for a long time, but it was just more difficult for her to speak. She was also lazy, and her communication with Lin Qi at the moment was just nodding and shaking her head, with complex replies being signalled by hand gestures.
The little zombie shook her head and her fingers moved like a conductor.
Lin Qi looked at her, confused.
Then he saw the empty bag from the bread she had just finished eating, and he was puzzled for a moment: ‘Can you eat?’
The little zombie nodded.
So Lin Qi ran back, shouting, ‘Zhang NI sister, is there anything to eat? I’m starving.’
What’s wrong with everyone today? They’re all starving.’Zhang NI muttered.
The bus was about to leave, and Lin Qi got on. As he passed Sheng Lang, he felt as if the other person was staring at him.
Lin Qi passed him without saying anything.
He didn’t tell him not only because it was selfish, but also because of Yu Huan’s current status as a zombie.
He wasn’t sure how Sheng Lang would treat Yu Huan after she had turned into a zombie.
