Chapter 30: Chapter 1:A House That Breathes
The mansion loomed before them, its gothic silhouette stretching against the cloudy night sky as the wind whistled through the dead trees. The windows flickered, ghostly light dancing like will-o'-the-wisps behind cracked glass.
The front doors hung slightly ajar, groaning softly (CREEEAAK) as if exhaling a long breath, welcoming them inside.
Adrian crossed his arms, boots grinding against the gravel path. "Alright. We get in, deal with whatever's causing this, and get out."
Felix tilted his head, taking in the eerie atmosphere with a smirk. "Feels like home already."
Selene stepped forward, fingers brushing against the splintered wood of the doorway. A strange energy throbbed beneath her fingertips, restless and unstable.
She frowned. "Something's wrong with this place."
Felix chuckled, the sound light but edged with excitement. "Yeah. It looks haunted."
"No," Selene whispered, her breath fogging in the unnatural chill. "Not just haunted. This house isn't normal."
As if responding to her words, the floor beneath them groaned, the sound stretching through the walls like a dying breath.
A whisper drifted past them, barely audible, curling in the cold air.
Adrian pushed the door open fully, the hinges shrieking as the weight of the mansion seemed to settle. "No use standing around. Let's move."
They stepped inside.
The Doors Lock Behind Them
The moment the last of them crossed the threshold—
BANG!
The door slammed shut, a burst of wind snaking through the halls, flickering candlelight against the warped walls.
The sconces shuddered, shadows twisting unnaturally along the peeling wallpaper.
At the far end of the corridor, an old grandfather clock stood, its pendulum swinging in rhythmic defiance—yet the hands never moved.
Felix ran a hand along the wall, the surface cold, pulsing faintly beneath his palm. "Feels… alive."
Then—
A voice, soft as breath, curled through the air.
"You shouldn't be here."
Selene stiffened, her gaze darting through the flickering candlelight. "Who said that?"
Adrian's grip on his weapon tightened, leather creaking beneath his fingers. "Show yourself."
A faint shimmer in the dim light—then a form began to take shape, barely more than a shadow clinging to existence.
The Ghost's Warning
A ghost.
But unlike the vengeful spirits they had fought before, this one didn't lash out. It hovered in place, translucent and trembling.
Felix stepped forward, head tilting in curiosity. "You look lost, friend."
The ghost's form wavered, flickering like candlelight in the wind. "I'm not lost. You are."
Before they could react—
The walls convulsed.
The hallway twisted, stretching impossibly as doors melted into the shadows.
The floor beneath them lurched as a staircase unfurled from nowhere, ancient wood groaning beneath invisible weight.
A Living Maze
Adrian set his stance, muscles coiled like a spring. "…What the hell?"
Selene exhaled sharply, pressing a palm against the nearest wall. The wood thrummed beneath her touch. "Told you. This place is unstable."
The ghost trembled, its form thinning like mist. "It won't let you leave. Not until you fix what's broken."
Felix's grin widened, excitement sparking in his gaze. "Now we're talking."
Adrian rolled his shoulders, feeling the weight of the mission folder tucked inside his coat. The details were clear—vanished residents, shifting architecture, whispers that shouldn't exist.
This wasn't just a haunting.
Something else was at play here.
And whatever it was—it was watching them.
