Chapter 29: Chapter 8:Final Confrontation: The Priest's Control
Ivan, Liza, and Noah gasped (GASP!) as they regained their senses, their bodies still cold from the remnants of the memory. But there was no time to process—
BOOM!
A shockwave blasted through the ruined industrial zone (CRASH!), sending debris flying.
They turned just in time to see Yumi deflecting a monstrous strike (CLANG!). The ground beneath her cracked (CRACK!), fragments of pavement splintering outward. The force of the attack sent her skidding back (SCRRRCH!), her boots grinding against the pavement.
And standing across from her—
The priest.
Or rather, what used to be him.
His serene face was gone, twisted by dark veins pulsing beneath his skin (THROB. THROB.). His eyes, once kind, now glowed with an eerie, unnatural light (FZZZZT!).
But that wasn't the worst part.
The civilians—dozens of them—stood between Ivan's team and Yumi, blocking the way (SHUFFLE. SHUFFLE.). Their movements were unnatural, like puppets on invisible strings (CREEEAK.).
Liza took a sharp breath (INHALE—). "They're under control!"
Noah gritted his teeth (GRIND!). "Damn it. Are they possessed?"
Yumi, still focused on the fight, snapped (SNAP!), "No! They're still human! Do NOT harm them!"
Ivan reacted instantly, throwing his hands up (WHOOSH!). "Barrier up!"
VMMM!
A shimmering wall of energy surged between them and the civilians, stopping their advance without hurting them. But the priest merely raised his hand—
And the civilians turned toward Yumi instead.
The priest's voice, though calm, rang with something unnatural.
"Defend the altar."
Like mindless soldiers, the civilians charged toward the broken church behind him (STOMP! STOMP! STOMP!)—toward the altar.
---
The Source of It All
Noah's eyes flickered (FZZZT!) as he activated his tracking skill. His vision sharpened, pushing past the physical—
And then he saw it.
A dark, rope-like energy (SLLLLK!) wrapped around the priest, binding him in place. But the strands didn't stop there. They slithered past him, connecting to the altar.
Noah's eyes widened (FLASH!). "The altar—it's the source!"
Yumi dodged another attack (WHOOSH!), her gaze snapping toward the altar. "Then we break the connection."
She lunged forward (FWOOOSH!)—but the priest moved unnaturally fast (BLINK!), blocking her path. With another eerie gesture (FZZT!), he commanded the civilians to form a shield in front of it.
Noah clenched his fists (TIGHTEN!). "Damn it! We can't attack them!"
Liza, thinking fast, pulled a small vial from her belt (CLINK!). Without hesitation, she hurled it toward the crowd—
PSSHHH!
A soft mist spread through the air (HISSSSS), harmless yet effective.
The moment the civilians inhaled it—
Their bodies lifted off the ground (WHOOSH!), floating weightlessly.
With the path clear, Yumi shot forward, her fist glowing with energy—
CRACK!
Her palm slammed into the altar (BOOM!).
A deep, unnatural wail echoed (SCREEEEEECH!) as the structure split apart (KRRRRRSH!). A pulse of dark energy (THOOM!) burst from within, writhing wildly before vanishing into the air.
The civilians collapsed (THUD!). The eerie glow left their eyes (FZZZT!).
It was over.
---
The "Miracle"
The townspeople stirred (MURMURS.), confusion washing over their faces.
A woman clutched her head (RUB.). "What… happened?"
A man rubbed his arms (BRUSH.). "I—I think we were praying, and then…"
Their memories—gone.
Liza stared, baffled. "They don't remember anything?"
Ivan stepped forward smoothly (STEP. TAP.). "It's a miracle from God."
GASP!
The people dropped to their knees in prayer (RUSTLE. THUD!).
Liza smirked (SMIRK!). "Nice save."
Noah exhaled (EXHALE…). "Let's go before they make us saints."
---
The Priest's Secret
Before leaving, Yumi approached the priest (STEP. STEP.). He sat on the ground, exhausted, but unlike the others—he remembered.
Her eyes narrowed (GLINT.). "You know something, don't you?"
The priest hesitated (PAUSE…), then whispered,
"Lord bless me… He give me salvation…"
Yumi held his gaze (TENSE. SILENCE.). "I'll be back for answers."
She turned to Ivan's team. "Your exam is done. Go back."
But as they prepared to leave, Noah hesitated (PAUSE. SHIFT.). "Instructor."
Yumi glanced at him. "What?"
He frowned. "How did we fall asleep?"
Yumi's expression darkened (SHADOW. SHIFT.). "Good question."
She looked toward the church. "When I was watching you from the shadows, you never even entered. The moment you touched the church gate—"
"—You collapsed."
Liza tensed (SHIVER.). "Then that means…"
Ivan adjusted his glasses (GLINT!), thinking. "Someone forced us into that memory."
A chill ran through the group (SHUDDER.).
Noah crossed his arms (TENSE.). "So the real question is—"
"Who put us there?"
For a moment—silence.
Then Liza muttered, "And another thing…"
She looked at the others, uncertain. "Who was that masked boy?"
The question hung between them.
None of them had an answer.
---
A War from the Past
Yumi folded her arms (CROSS.). "Describe the place you saw."
Ivan nodded (NOD.). "It was a city. Destroyed. Overrun by monsters."
Yumi's expression darkened (SHADOW.). "I thought so."
She exhaled (EXHALE…). "This city… it really was attacked long ago. A massive rift opened, and monsters poured out. The exorcists sealed it, but it was one of the biggest disasters in our history."
Liza's eyes widened (SHOCK!). "So it wasn't just a memory… it was real history."
Ivan was deep in thought (FOCUS.). "But something doesn't add up."
He looked at Yumi. "In the memory… the elders only sent one boy."
Yumi frowned. "That's impossible. No one fights alone against something that massive."
Achoo!(SNEEZE!)
Noah muttered, "Then why did we see it?"
Yumi hesitated (PAUSE.). Then, in a lower voice, she said,
"Because… this battle was in the academy's secret archives."
The air grew heavy (TENSE. SILENCE.).
Liza raised a brow. "Secret archives?"
Yumi nodded slowly (NOD.). "It was a lesson—but only for top students. We were taught about the rift disaster, how the exorcists fought and sealed it… but the part about a single boy fighting alone?"
Her jaw clenched (TENSE.). "That was never mentioned."
Ivan adjusted his glasses (GLINT!), thinking. "Then the real battle was kept."
Noah exhaled sharply (EXHALE—). "Meaning someone doesn't want the truth to come out."
For a moment—silence.
Then Liza muttered, "And another thing…"
She looked at the others, uncertain. "Who was that masked boy?"
The question hung between them.
None of them had an answer.
End...
