Chapter 26: Chapter 5:The Ghost of an Exorcist Past
Inside the crumbling building, Ivan, Liza, and Noah took a moment to catch their breath (Huff… Huff…). Dust hung in the air (Cough. Cough.), illuminated by faint streaks of moonlight breaking through the collapsed ceiling. Broken furniture and shattered glass littered the ground (Crunch… Snap…).
Before they could relax, a voice emerged from the shadows.
"Who are you?"
A sharp metallic click (CLICK!) echoed through the room.
A figure stepped forward, a gun aimed directly at them (CHHK—!). His stance was firm, unshaken—like someone used to battle.
Instinctively, Ivan raised his hands.
"We're not monsters. We mean no harm."
The figure didn't lower his weapon. Instead, he stepped into the dim light.
A young boy stood before them, his face partially hidden by a mask resting on his head (Rustle…). His clothes were ragged but sturdy, his movements precise and disciplined.
Something about him felt off—like he wasn't entirely real.
The boy's eyes narrowed.
"Yes, I know you're human. That's not what I meant. I asked why you're here."
His voice was steady, but there was an edge to it.
"This zone is under lockdown. A demon attack wiped out nearly everything. The survivors are barely holding on."
As he spoke, something glinted on his chest (SHNK!).
A badge.
Ivan's breath caught in his throat.
That insignia…
It was the emblem of the Exorcist Order.
But not the current one.
This badge was from long ago.
Liza and Noah exchanged glances before Ivan spoke carefully.
"We're exorcists."
The boy tilted his head.
"Huh? You don't look like exorcists. You look weak."
Annoyance flickered in Noah's eyes.
"You want proof?"
The three of them activated Energy Gathering (FWOOOM!), their auras flaring to life. The boy watched in silence, his grip on the gun tightening.
Then, after a moment—he smirked.
"Ho… So you can use Energy Gathering. Fine, I believe you. But that just makes me more confused."
His smirk widened slightly.
"Wait, are you guys like… new recruits? No offense, but you kinda look like you'd trip over your own weapons."
Liza sighed.
"Great, even a ghost kid is mocking us now."
"Ghost? Whoa, hold on! I'm not a ghost! …At least, I don't think I am?"
The boy tapped his chin (Tap. Tap.), then shrugged.
"Hmm, existential crisis aside, let's focus on the real problem—what the hell are you doing here?"
Ivan exhaled.
"We're investigating the disappearances in this zone."
The boy blinked.
"Disappearances?"
Then his face darkened.
"…Oh. I get it now."
Ivan hesitated.
"Get what?"
The boy shook his head.
"Never mind. More importantly, if you're really exorcists, did the elders send you?"
His words felt… strange.
Like he was speaking from a different time.
Then he added something that made their blood run cold.
"I'm in the middle of a mission. My orders are to exterminate all demons here."
Silence fell over the room.
Ivan, Liza, and Noah froze.
Exterminate all demons?
The demon that had nearly killed them outside… The one that had shattered Ivan's strongest barrier…
And this kid was sent to wipe them out?
Noah broke the silence first.
"…No offense, kid, but are you sure that's not above your pay grade?"
The boy grinned.
"Maybe. But if I get eaten, I won't have to worry about rent, so it's a win-win."
Before they could ask him more—
A thunderous crash shook the building.
BOOOOOOM!
The walls trembled (CRACK! RUMBLE!).
The giant monster that had been chasing them had found them again.
