Chapter 17: The Devil's Return.

Chapter 17

Subey's world spun. The pain from the stab wound in her side blurred her vision, but it was John's voice that cut through the haze.

"I knew you wouldn't stay down for long, Subey."

She blinked rapidly, trying to make sense of the scene unfolding before her. John—alive. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest.

"You—" Subey gasped, struggling to push herself up from the cold concrete. Blood soaked through her shirt, the wound still fresh, but it was the shock of seeing him standing there that made her dizzy. "You were dead."

John tilted his head, a dark smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "No. I was just waiting for the right moment."

Mia stood off to the side, watching with a disinterested look on her face. "You never thought he was really gone, did you?"

Subey's mind reeled. The man who had betrayed her, who she had mourned, was standing right in front of her. And now, he was the last thing standing between her and the answers she desperately needed.

John's footsteps echoed as he walked toward her, each step deliberate, heavy. The knife still gleamed in his hand, dripping with her blood.

"I know what you're thinking, Subey," John said, his voice low and almost comforting, if it weren't for the venom in his words. "You're wondering why. Why would I do this to you? To us?"

Subey's hand instinctively reached for the knife wound, but it was no use. She couldn't focus on the pain. Not yet.

"Why?" Subey managed, her voice hoarse. "Why did you do it? Betray me?"

John's eyes darkened, his expression hardening. "It wasn't just you, Subey. I didn't betray you. I was trying to save you... from him."

Subey furrowed her brow. "Him? Who are you talking about?"

Before John could answer, a sharp voice rang out from the shadows of the warehouse.

"It's about time you figured it out, Subey."

A tall, imposing figure stepped into the dim light, his cold, calculating gaze locking onto Subey. His features were rugged, weathered, yet there was something unnervingly familiar about him.

"John wasn't the one you should have been watching. It was me all along."

Subey's breath caught in her throat. The man stepped closer, and her heart stopped as she recognized him.

"No... it can't be," she whispered.

"Oh, it is," the man said, his lips curling into a predatory grin. "I'm your real enemy, Subey. Your brother."
