Chapter 6: UPTURNED PEACE
There was one thing Detective Kelly hated even more than crime itself and it was definitely his peaceful sleep being disturbed. He had been woken up this morning with the information that there had been a murder in his city. These were usually things but they said there was actually something extraordinary about this one which he had to see. This prompted him to start dragging himself to the crime scene.
When he arrived, coffee in hand, he realised that he had been to this store before. The owner had once shared a drink with him and this was almost going to be sort of personal. As he arrived, the deputies all had sullen faces and he wondered what exactly had happened.
"You might want to lose the coffee, Kelly. This one would upturn your stomach for the rest of the day." The police chief said to him.
"Well, they already upturned my peace. So, let's see what else they can achieve." He remarked stubbornly.
"As you wish." The police chief, Hanks said.
They entered now. Everywhere had been marked out as the members of the forensic team were already checking the place out. The body was on the floor and there was a guy examining it and taking pictures.
Detective Kelly approached and then squatted as he took a look
There was a gun too on the floor really close to the counter and there was blood splattered across the floor.
"What do you think happened, Bane?" He asked the forensic guy.
"This one is going to seem really weird. The gun definitely went off and I'll say it hit someone really bad. Look at that place that seems to have a heap of blood, it's flesh bits. I think someone was definitely hit and that's around the stomach region." He explained as Detective Kelly turned his neck and looked.
"So, there were two of them?" He asked Bane.
"Probably but footsteps indicate one. And then there is no sign of a body being dragged." Bane explained.
"Maybe carried by his companion who finishes old Brooks." He suggested.
"Possibly." Bane said as he took another picture.
Detective himself was glancing around to see if there was anything that would help him with this. The old man's body had been burnt really badly but still whole. But there were no signs of him getting lit up.
"So, what happened to the old man? Burns?" He asked Bane.
"Now, that's where the interesting part of this murder is. Look at his mouth." Bane said as he set aside the camera and with his gloved hands, pried open the man's mouth.
The sight of it was horrible and it definitely churned his stomach. What he was seeing right now was a tongue roasted till it was black and there was not a single sign of colourfulness. Even the teeth had been badly messed up from the fire.
"Jesus Christ. What is that?" He muttered.
"See, that's what is making my mind blow up. This man seems to have been burned from the inside and what we see on the outside is a reflection of the horror he went through within." Bane explained.
This did not make any sense to him. How on earth does someone burn from the inside? But even more badly was the fact that if that had been the case then the person who did this had a serious beef with the old man.
"That's impossible, right?" He asked.
"True. I too am marvelled and that's why I suspected something was put inside of him. I'll have to get the autopsy report to make any statements on this. For now, I can only have a theory." Bane said.
Detective Kelly had heard enough on this part.
"Can you make out any prints or something from the body? Or the store?" He asked him.
"There are lots of prints in the store. The blood has been sent to be tested too so we can identify the owner but for now, I say we're at a dead end." Bane responded.
Detective Kelly rose up and started walking away. His insides churned with so much anger. This crime was far deep rooted to be overlooked. He found a basket and then threw the coffee away. Definitely, he would not be eating for the rest of the day, at least not meat.
"I told you that you would lose the coffee." Hanks said and started approaching him.
"This is so wrong. Do we have any suspects?" He asked.
"None at all but a few witnesses came around to say that old Brooks had it for some homeless man last night. Do you think he might have done it?" Hanks asked him.
"A homeless man would not have done something as terrible as this but I'm not ruling out. I need permission to question all the homeless people in the area to see who had the hots for him and also witnesses." Detective Kelly requested.
"Sure. Just find this bastard." Hanks said to him.
"Sure." Detective Kelly responded.
"And you might want to ask your girlfriend if her dad is aware of anything. We all might have overlooked him based on his show, but we all know better than to overlook the fact that this might be something from the mafia. A lot of these store owners actually launder money for them." Hanks said.
"Not Brooks. He just wanted to survive. But I'll ask." Detective Kelly said.
"Attaboy." The police chief responded as he started walking away.
At the moment, he was wondering what her reaction would be when he approached her in respect to the possibility of her father's involvement. Lisa had made it clear to him that her father had promised her that he would not kill anyone without purpose. Perhaps, there should be a reason why he might have wanted to do Brooks harm. Either way, it was definitely going to cause a rift in their relationship.
He decided to go to his car and muster the courage needed to speak to her. Fishing out and lighting himself a cigarette, he drew a really long drag then let it go off slowly as he stared at the cloud of smoke he was releasing.
Just then, someone knocked on his window and he saw an officer there. He lowered his glass.
"Sir, a call for you." The young officer said to him.
"From who?" He demanded.
"The local sheriff. He said to give the detective in charge here." The officer said.
The local sheriff, what did he possibly want? They had made certain to overlook things about his jurisdiction despite the fact that the place was a high ground for kidnappers and robbers. He was already prepared to tell him off as he took the phone.
"Detective Kelly on the line." He said.
"Great. I heard you all have a dead body in your hands that was burned?" He asked him.
"How fast are words flying? So, are you asking me to confirm or what?" He demanded.
"Listen, I'm not here to fight with you. I'm certain you're still pissed from our last meeting but I think your killer struck here too. We found a house burnt down." The man said to him.
"Well, no house was burnt down here." Detective Kelly said, trying to be careful enough not to divulge information to the man who he did not trust one bit.
"I get it boy. But the forensics here found a farmer and his daughter's body in the ruins, from what they say, they both were already dead before the fire came up and the funny thing is, their truck is gone. Someone took it and left." The man said to him.
"You're probably chasing an armed robber which is usual with your place. I have an important investigation to carry out, and have a great day ahead." He said.
"Wait..." The old man was saying but he already hung up as he glanced at the young officer.
"Did you tell him?" He demanded.
"No, sir. He called our hotline. I happened to be close to the phone, so I transferred the call." He responded.
"Okay but ensure not to divulge information. That's bad." He responded.
The moment the young officer left, he knew what he was going to do next. Lisa must have been awakened already and he dialed her line. She picked up almost immediately.
"Calling to apologise for last night?" She demanded.
"Not really, I was right and you know that. I only wanted to ask you a question." He said to her,
"I'm in no mood to answer your questions." She responded.
"There was a murder and I need to confirm something from you." He said to her,
These two always had their issues but right now, all the detective wanted was to solve his current case. He was definitely going to deal with her drama later.
"A murder? What has that got to do with me?" She demanded.
"Not you, I have a question about your father." He responded.
For a moment, she was quiet.
"I see. You still don't believe him but guess what, go fuck yourself." Lisa responded as she hung up.
