Surgery Godfather

Chapter 221 - 0208: Encounter

Chapter 221: Chapter 0208: Encounter

Jiang Baicheng has been admitted to G City People’s Hospital, a matter of great importance to the hospital administration. The time for a hospital-wide consultation has finally been locked down for 10 a.m.

At 9:30 a.m., in the small meeting room in the administration building, all the directors are gathered around an oval table.

Even the head the gynecology department, who has seemingly no connection to the case, is present. It’s unclear why she’s there, considering this is likely a busy time for surgeries.

The main character hasn’t appeared yet, so they begin with an internal pre-op discussion. For example, they talk about Jiang Baicheng’s high blood pressure and diabetes, and how to control these factors during the surgery.

The director of cardiac internal medicine, tapping his finger on the nursing record, checks the blood pressure levels three times from admission until the present day, thoroughly satisfied with the control achieved.

“Before the surgery begins, give the patient a small amount of water and have him take an anti-hypertensive pill – one Beixin Tong, 30mg – to prevent any rise in blood pressure during the operation,” the director of cardiac internal medicine itemized each word.

The person responsible for meeting minutes recorded it word for word.

The endocrinology department director personally affixed an insulin pump to Jiang BaiCheng’s abdominal skin. Normally, this is an act carried out by junior physicians, but he’s doing it himself. Even though his hands have become somewhat clumsy due to lack of practice, it was fairly easy task and he was able to complete it smoothly. His blood sugar control is also good, slightly higher than normal, which is optimal for the perioperative period. If an additional glucose and insulin setup is administered during the operation to maintain mildly elevated blood sugar levels, then his task will be considered finished.

If this were a normal patient, such control of blood pressure and blood sugar would warrant a glance or two, but certainly not the involvement of two department directors.

Now that the blood pressure and blood sugar have been accounted for, they have to address his minor fatty liver. Under normal circumstances, this wouldn’t be an issue, but any abnormalities now are examined by the department directors who give their opinions in the form of long notes.

The director of general surgery is unsure after looking at the liver ultrasound, but finally comes to a conclusion: it will not affect the surgery.

In relation to the fatty liver, the Department of Nutrition provides a detailed diet plan. At least 10 pages long, it includes meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea, and snacks after a round of golf. The rehabilitation department director also taught Jiang BaiCheng a set of Eight Pieces of Brocade exercises to help him burn fat.

Beriberi, a fungal infection in the feet, has also appeared. The dermatology department provides a detailed plan which includes Western medicine for oral and topical antifungal treatment, as well as Chinese medicine foot baths, nothing is left out.

There is a nodule in the lung, and after a series of tests including X-ray, CT scan, and a whole-body PET-CT, a professor from another hospital is asked to come over to make a conclusion. It’s determined to be old tuberculosis, and doesn’t require any treatment. Actually, everyone already knows it’s old TB, but someone has to officially make that conclusion. After all, what if it isn’t?

Dean Xie of G City People’s Hospital, sitting slightly to one side of the head of the table, has reserved the seat at the head and the one close to it for Su Nanchen and the professor. Looking at the patient’s medical records displayed on the projector, Dean Xie nods in satisfaction. Everything is ready, all they need now is the right wind, the “wind” in this case being Su Nanchen.

Dean Xie is due to retire in a year, and his successor will be Director Wu of Orthopedics, currently the acting vice-president. Everything has been arranged accordingly.

Even though some of the hospital staff have expressed discontent, Dean Xie has managed to placate them all. As for what kind of person Director Wu really is, that’s not something Dean Xie is concerned about. All he cares about is that Jiang BaiCheng can ensure a peaceful and happy retirement for him.

As for who will take his position, it has absolutely nothing to do with him. It’s not like he’s picking a son-in-law. His safe landing is the top priority.

Dean Xie has sat in the position of dean for over a decade, a feat not everyone is capable of. He is a capable leader, a strong figure who poured blood, sweat, and tears into G City People’s Hospital.

Right after he took up his position, he initiated a series of decisive actions, starting by burning the first fire and launching the “Smile Service”. Starting from this Smile Service, he led a series of brilliant initiatives that were recognized and appreciated, and he held his position as dean firmly for over a decade.

What exactly does Smile Service mean? All doctors and nurses within the hospital must display a smile when facing patients. Regardless of the reason, anyone caught not smiling would be penalized by a pay cut.

To push this service-oriented initiative forward, he often made surprise inspections himself. When he found any doctor or nurse not smiling at a patient, they were fined five hundred on the spot.

There was a doctor who just left the outpatient clinic when he received a call that his father had a myocardial infarction. The doctor was in the middle of consultation with a patient when he received the call, and his face drained of color.

Unfortunately for him, Dean Xie happened upon him at that moment. Such service attitude was not to be tolerated, and he was instantly fined five hundred. Unconditional meant there was absolutely no chance for any explanation – the penalty came first.

It would be too exhausting for only one person to carry out these surprise inspections, but Dean Xie was very capable manager. He organized a Service Surveillance Committee, consisting of administrative staff, and scattered these committee members throughout the hospital corners to keep an eye out for any unsmiling faces.

It was exactly the right move! These people sitting in the office, doing nothing else, hardly came to work some of them – too many people in the same office, but now they are all here.

A five hundred penalty, one hundred of which went to the monitoring officer, with a hundred per case. Even picking money up from the street couldn’t be as easy as this, no wind, no rain.

During that time, several doctors suffered from facial paralysis due to maintaining a smile for extended periods. Some other doctors couldn’t keep up with the service quality and had no choice but to seek other jobs. They quit, or more accurately, they were eliminated!

Let them go. Who would worry about finding a replacement at such a good hospital? Dean Xie, a man of great achievements, didn’t care if a few doctors or nurses decided to jump ship. As for those who left, he promptly signed the release, not holding back anyone.

Dean Xie’s strategy was a stroke of genius, and it shot the service quality of G City People’s Hospital straight to the top in the entire city. He brought back a huge Service Model plaque, and it is still hanging on the wall in the outpatient department.

A smile won’t be enough, Dean Xie has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. The second sweeping reform was competitive employment! That is, all department heads had to reshuffle and reapply for their posts.

Director Wu was promoted at that time. The Director before him, a doctoral degree holder, was good at academics and surgery but couldn’t wrap his head around the intense competition and thus, was ousted. That’s how Director Wu got his position.

Upon assuming the Director’s position, Director Wu immediately suspended the surgical privileges of the former Director, constantly asking him to assist in surgeries and berating him during the process.

The doctor, a chief physician in his forties, couldn’t put up with the humiliation in front of so many people. One day, he ripped off his surgical gown and gloves, swearing he didn’t want to handle it anymore.

He left on the same day, later joining another hospital and achieving great success, proving that his intelligence wasn’t the problem – rather, his talents were buried amongst the excessive medical talents at the city hospital.

“See, this kind of person leaves on receiving a bit of criticism. Everyone saw it, right? I was only educating him normally, but he chose to leave,” Director Wu remarked, feeling misunderstood.

In the following years, Director Wu successfully reduced the number of beds in the Orthopedics Department from 120 to 60 – living up to everyone’s expectations. Three doctoral degree holders in the department were also successfully eliminated.

Dean Xie, determined to improve the hospital’s image and work ethics, began renovating the old buildings while constructing new ones. He also had the trees around the hospital replaced with more high-end varieties for a more uniform look.

Although the old building wasn’t really old (just a few years since it was last renovated), Dean Xie demanded excellence. He insisted that the renovations weren’t warm enough for the patients and called for another round of refurbishing.

After the series of reforms, G City’s People’s Hospital climbed a new step forward. Most of the doctoral degree holders, who were cooped up in their books, were pushed out, leaving that stage for capable people like Director Wu.

After ten or more years of dedication to the hospital, it was retirement time. All that was expected was some peace – a wish that seemed difficult to come true. Unfortunately, some people who couldn’t appreciate Dean Xie’s painstaking efforts were acting up with incessant complaints.

You people, how annoying! Dean Xie complained, mentally.

Now that Jiang Baicheng was here, these minor things wouldn’t matter anymore, the Dean thought.

Sitting upright, Dean Xie awaited the arrival of Su Nanchen, whose impressive lineage made him an unmissable star in G City’s medical fraternity.

“Dean, Dr. Su’s about to arrive. He’s also brought a professor along,” Director Wu said, sitting next to Dean Xie.

Dean Xie, a bit displeased, asked, “What happened? Didn’t you send someone to pick them up?”

A somewhat upset Director Wu replied, “I did, but Dr. Su insisted on coming by himself, and had set off before our car could get there.”

“Oh!” Dean Xie didn’t add anything further.

“I’ll go receive him at the entrance!” Director Wu, getting a bit restless, took this as an opportunity to slip out for a while.

“Sure, make it quick!” Dean Xie maintained his composure.

After parking the car, Su Nanchen headed over to the Meeting Room of the People’s Hospital, along with Yang Ping. Just as they exited the elevator, Yang Ping noticed he still had some time: “I will head over to the restroom.”

“Alright, I’ll wait for you over there,” Su Nanchen said, pointing to a corner. He felt uncomfortable waiting in a conspicuous location.

Being familiar with the People’s Hospital, Yang Ping quickly found the restroom. He had just entered when…

It’s a small world. In the restroom, he unexpectedly came across Director Wu, who had just finished urinating. Director Wu was zipping up his trousers when he saw Yang Ping and was taken aback.

After a brief moment of recognition, stuttering, Director Wu asked, “Ya–Yang, what are you doing here?”

Unsure if he was hallucinating, Director Wu blinked a couple of times and rubbed his eyes.

“Oh, I’m just visiting. How are you, Director Wu?” Yang Ping asked. He knew he would meet Director Wu sooner or later. However, meeting in the restroom was a little awkward.

“Good—! Quite—good!” Director Wu managed to respond.

He hastily zipped up his trousers without washing his hands and quickly walked out, frequently looking back.

Director Wu rushed to another restroom, took out his phone, and said, “Xiao Fu, contact the security department. Ask Chief Bao to bring several security guards to the restroom near the Meeting Room, the one on the west side. Hurry up; don’t let this affect things.”

Unbelievable, this kid’s here, Director Wu thought, his mind spinning rapidly.
