Chapter 3: Chapter 03: Sometimes You Don't Know What's Real
"You said, you saw somebody in the bathroom mirror?" one of the male investigators asked Sandra. Another female investigator was taking pictures with an old fascinated camera at the top of the staircase. "It doesn't seem this would happen," he continued. Sandra's father just walked in the front door.
"What is going on here, Sandra?" Mr. Starbright asked, suspiciously. She blushed and turned away from looking at her father. She was embarrassed to have a wild imagination run away with her. "I was just out for a night. I didn't think my daughter would get busted into something she wasn't accused of doing…" Mr. Starbright's voice trailed off.
The young male investigator nodded and scribbled something in his yellow notepad with a pencil in his hand. "It looks like there was a burglar who broke in last night. It wasn't interested in anything but giving Sandra a little scare," the young investigator explained.
Mr. Starbright seemed interested. He grabbed hold of his daughter and hugged her. "Will it happen again?" Mr. Starbright asked, frowning. Sandra couldn't stop shivering. She was tired of being bullied by the neighborhood kids. "What should we do to keep this from happening?" Mr. Starbright asked, holding onto his daughter tighter.
After the young female investigator flashed the bathroom mirror upstairs, she discovered another clue to their investigation. "Whoever was interested in scaring this poor girl to death, has been following her every move," she said. "Even though the young boy doesn't always appear, he knows Sandra's bathroom mirror is a way to get her to notice him," the girl investigator said.
Sandra doesn't want anything to do with this ghost boy wanting her attention. She couldn't believe how much this is frightening her every night. "Dad, I can't sleep until this haunted boy disappears from my life, forever," Sandra suddenly snapped. "I won't sleep until my bathroom mirror is free of letting my unwanted soul keep from taking me away from the real world," Sandra continued.
The two young investigators looked at each other and started whispering to each other in low voices. Mr. Starbright and Sandra turned away from them, while they gathered information about Sandra's ghost problem.
While they turned back to Mr. Starbright and Sandra, the male investigator, scribbled something in his notepad. Then, they both turned back to their attention. "Have you heard about the Real Ghost Reapers?" Mr. Starbright and Sandra looked at each other and shrugged.
The girl investigator smiled and took Sandra and Mr. Starbright's photograph with her flash video camera. Sandra and Mr. Starbright blinked from the bright light. Waiting for their vision to clear, they turned to hear something howling in Sandra's bathroom again.
The two investigators turned and looked at each other with suspicion. Then, they turned and bolted out of the Starbright's front door, screaming. "Wait! Don't go!" Sandra shouted. But after the howling stopped from the top of the stairs, she turned serious. Then, Sandra started to walk up the stairs.
"I don't think you should go alone, Sandra, dear," Mr. Starbright suggested. Sandra's father started walking beside her on the step of the staircase. Holding onto Sandra's hand, they continued walking up the staircase. "If this gets too much for you, you let me know. I know how to handle a ghost from haunting our property," Mr. Starbright said. He continued walking up the stairs, holding onto his daughter's hand.
Sandra let go of her father's hand. She stepped back. "You don't understand anything about this haunting," Sandra said. "I have to get rid of this ghost, myself," Sandra said. "It doesn't want anything to do with you, Dad," Sandra explained.
Mr. Starbright didn't want anything to happen to his only daughter. "You know how these ghosts like to do more than haunt you," Mr. Starbright said. "I think this ghost is only interested in one thing: Haunt the living until there is nobody left in this house!" he said.
Sandra's father started to head hurriedly back up the stairs, without taking his daughter with him. Suddenly, Mr. Starbright gassed when he reached the top of the staircase. The lights in Sandra's bathroom started flickering on and off repeatedly.
At first, Mr. Starbright couldn't see anything unusual happening in Sandra's bathroom. Until he saw his reflection staring back at him. With the reflection of Mr. Starbright's ghostly face grinning back at him… "Sandra, come here, quick!" Mr. Starbright said. He mentioned for his daughter to meet up the stairs to her bathroom hallway.
Looking with fear and dread at her father, Sandra remained still at the bottom of the staircase. Mr. Starbright couldn't take his eyes off the bathroom mirror. He couldn't tell what he was looking at, exactly.
It was him in his reflection. Only pale and looked like he tried to suck on Mr. Starbright's soul. It was trying to capture Mr. Starbright's reflection. Nothing he could do to keep the evil ghost reflection from using all its strength to suck his life force out of him.
Sandra didn't want the mean spirited ghost to do any harm to her father. So, Sandra grunted and took full charge up the stairs to the bathroom in the hallway. Where she tackled her dad out of the way!
She toppled over on top of Mr. Starbright. And watched as who she thought was her real father, was trying to suck out Sandra's soul, herself, too! Fighting to keep her mouth closed with her free hand, Mr. Starbright slapped her hand away.
Her father continued sucking Sandra's soul out of her body. "Why…are you doing this, Daddy?" Sandra screamed, trying to defend herself from getting her soul sucked. Her father was so angry, he got on top of his daughter. And pinned her arms to Sandra's sides.
Mr. Starbright's eyes glowed. He opened his mouth again. And started sucking Sandra's body out of her again. Sandra tried to keep her mouth shut. But Mr. Starbright was stronger than her. So, he used his eyes to hypnotize her.
"I don't want you talking with this ghost boy," Mr. Starbright demanded. "You belong with the ones you love. You shouldn't be haunting with any of those dark spirits who want to make you invisible to the world around you," Mr. Starbright continued.
Finally, something smacked hard against the back of Mr. Starbright's head…Gasping with fright, Sandra turned to look who hit her father behind his back…
It was her mother…Mrs. Starbright! She came to Sandra's rescue in the nick of time! Holding onto a heavy looking tool ranch from the garage, Mrs. Starbright couldn't believe what happened! "He was on drugs or something," Mrs. Starbright explained.
Sandra's mother helped her up slowly. "What's going on here, dear?" Mrs. Starbright asked, earnestly. "I'm worried about your father, too. I didn't stay long at Kendrick's house. Because I left to check on you and your father. It seems we have a connection with a supernatural spirit who likes hanging out in your bathroom mirror," Mrs. Starbright said.
Sandra and her mother both turned to look inside Sandra's bathroom. Looking at a normal mirror again, Mrs. Starbright turned her attention to her daughter. "I don't want you using this bathroom anymore. Until then, we know more about the haunted mirror. You can share your father and our bathroom downstairs," Mrs. Starbright said.
Not knowing how long this could go on, Sandra started sobbing and hugged her mother. "I'm sorry you have to deal with this," Mrs. Starbright said. "But I can assure you, ghosts aren't going to be around here much longer," Mrs. Starbright explained.
"Why do you say that, Mom?" Sandra asked, drying her tears. Mrs. Starbright turned to look at the normal looking bathroom mirror. She slowly closed Sandra's bathroom door and turned out the light.
"Because we are going to haunt the lost souls trapped in the mirror, back in return!" Mrs. Starbright said, excitedly. Sandra didn't know if anything would upset the spirits into believing Sandra and her family are already dead.
It didn't explain to Sandra why she often felt confused about her spirituality. Why hasn't she been able to leave her mortal life? If there was a better place in the afterlife, why couldn't Sandra and her parents move on?
There had to be some kind of explanation. Sandra knew she was never going to be the same. Sandra knew the ghosts in her bathroom mirror, tried taking her away from her parents. Sandra wouldn't understand how scary they wanted to keep Sandra away from the living.
It only takes an act of a miracle to make the ghosts believe Sandra belongs with the living. Once she gives the ghosts proof the Better Place is where Sandra needs to move forward. "If I'm dead, what will become of me?" Sandra asked, looking down at her father. He started to stir up and wake up.
Suddenly, he turned ill. He grabbed hold of his queasy stomach. And threw up in Sandra's bathroom.
