Chapter 624 Gods and Ghosts of All Heavens
Lin Shen held the bow and swept his eyes over the interior of the Golden Crow Temple one more time. After confirming there were no other findings, he left the temple with Ouyang Yudu and Wei Wufu.
However, just as they had left the Golden Crow Temple, they felt that eerie sensation of being watched by something again.
Lin Shen thought to himself, "Here it is again. The last time I had this feeling was when we left the Dark Bird Temple. If there's a commonality between these two temples, it's that we took something from them. It seems these things are the triggers for the surveillance."
With this realization, Lin Shen's expression became even more solemn.
If taking something caused them to be spied on, then didn't that mean each temple actually contained some sort of creature within? Perhaps they just hadn't been able to find them, or they were simply invisible to them.
Only after they had taken something, when those bizarre creatures watched them, could they start to sense it a bit.
If that was truly the case, this planet was far too terrifying. It was hard to imagine what kind of creature lay hidden within the temples.
Ouyang Yudu and Wei Wufu's expressions were equally serious, clearly having come to the same conclusion.
But at this juncture, all they could do was to grit their teeth and continue on.
Fortunately, that uncomfortable feeling of being watched disappeared after they entered the next temple district. Continue your adventure with My Virtual Library Empire
This allowed Lin Shen and his companions to breathe a sigh of relief, as long as those things did not come out to attack them, they were willing to negotiate.
This was a River God Temple and not far behind it was a black river with rapids and a width of several hundred meters.
Within the River God Temple, Lin Shen and his companions saw hanging deity statues, but there was no trace of the teleporter.
The three of them searched methodically. Along the way, they saw many temples; some with familiar names, others they had never heard of—not even Ouyang Yudu, who was so well-traveled, had seen many of them.
The most common among these temples were the Land Temples, Mountain God Temples, and River God Temples. Each mountain had its Mountain God Temple, and every river had its River God Temple situated nearby. There would also be a Land Temple at regular intervals.
Despite all calling themselves Land Temples, Mountain God Temples, or River God Temples, the hanging deity statues within suggested they were dedicated to different deities.
Lin Shen and his companions didn't dare to touch anything inside the temples anymore; they were merely searching for traces of the teleporter.
As the sky grew dark, they hadn't found the teleporter and had to continue their journey in the black night.
When the last ray of sunlight disappeared, the entire planet became pitch black, as dark as if one could not see one's hand in front of their face, with no moonlight or starlight; the darkness was complete.
Just as Lin Shen was about to bring out the Nightglow Flower for light, he suddenly saw multicolored pillars of light shooting up into the sky.
Many of the locations of these light pillars were temples they had visited before. However, most of the light pillars were in places they hadn't been to, presumably other temple locations.
Under the watchful eyes of Lin Shen and his companions, those soaring multicolored pillars turned into various mysterious and strange spectral entities in the sky, occupying corners of the void.
Some appeared as evil ghosts, others as celestial beings, from primeval monsters to sacred deities; some emanated a terrifying battle spirit, others possessed awe-inspiring strength.
Countless deity- and ghost-like spectral silhouettes filled the night sky, turning it into a spectacle of a demonic and ghostly shadow play.
The innumerable bizarre spectral beings all stared at them, as if myriad deities and spirits were looking down on insignificant ants.
Lin Shen and his two companions shuddered violently, feeling the presence of the shadows that swirled around them like malevolent spirits, exuding an unspeakably terrifying aura that was clearly beyond their ability to confront.
Merely the force they emanated was enough to oppress Lin Shen and his friends, making it hard for them to catch their breath, their bodies drenched in cold sweat.
Suddenly, the myriad of lights vanished, and the column of light that had pierced the heavens disappeared as well, leaving the world in silence and darkness.
Lin Shen noticed that the bow in his hands emitted a faint, cold luminescence, and Ouyang Yudu also had a glow coming from his pocket. He pulled it out and found it was the handkerchief with the love letter on it.
The handkerchief, like the bow, glimmered with light.
An idea struck Lin Shen, and he took out the Jade Token, which also glowed with the same light.
Lin Shen passed the Jade Token to Wei Wufu, feeling these items must be of some use; otherwise, Fei Zai wouldn't have had him bring them along.
Boom! Boom!
Lin Shen and his friends heard the terrifying sound of the earth trembling, as if some unfathomably monstrous giant was taking steps towards them, each step causing the ground to shake.
The three exchanged glances, wanting to leave the area quickly, but suddenly realized there were terrifying footsteps coming from all around—above and below, in all directions.
In the endless darkness, it seemed as though countless primordial beasts were encroaching from the shadows, with innumerable unseen eyes fixed on them, sending chills down their spines.
Although invisible, Lin Shen and his companions could feel the indescribable terror bearing down on them; any of the creatures lurking in the dark could easily crush them to death.
Each of them utilized their Base Mutation powers, floating back to back in midair, facing the menacing creatures that seemed to be everywhere.
The bow, token, and handkerchief in their hands began to shine brighter and brighter, illuminating the area around them for dozens of meters.
Lin Shen saw that where they had been standing, numerous arms had emerged from the ground, swaying like wild grass in the wind.
Those arms immediately emitted black smoke when touched by the light from the bow and plunged back underground, causing the ground to shake as if an evil demon were roaring below.
Lin Shen and his companions were both alarmed and elated. This land was not somewhere they were meant to tread, not even in the present state. Even if they could ascend to Nirvana, they would likely be as insignificant as chaff in such a place, completely at the mercy of others.
Fortunately, they had these three items in their hands, which seemed to suppress the unknown terrifying creatures in the darkness.
Especially the bow in Lin Shen's hands, its cold, ghostly glow was unusually intense.
"Could it be that this is truly the Hou Yi's Bow that brought down the nine Golden Crows?" Lin Shen wondered silently.
They couldn't see, yet they could feel that beyond the glow, it seemed as if countless demons and ghouls were packed together, watching them coldly.
Lin Shen and the others felt as if they had returned to their early childhood when turning off the lights after going to bed made it seem like the darkness was filled with man-eating monsters.
Back then, they had blankets for protection, but now they could only rely on the bow, token, and handkerchief in their hands.
What they didn't know was whether these three objects could fend off the innumerable terrors lurking in the darkness.
Suddenly, an immeasurably large golden claw descended from the sky and entered the range of the light.
