Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 270: Chapter 267

"Step, step, step..."

James walked forward, enjoying the faint aroma of the wine coming from the bottle, feeling pleased. Tonight, he would have his mother prepare some dishes, and then gather his father, brothers, and a few others to have a drink.

"Gee-up!"

The bottle was shoved into a burlap bag on the horse's back, and James mounted his horse, heading towards Drunken Night Restaurant. He knew exactly why that group of people had come.

A bunch of people had seen that the young master's territory was growing better and better, and now they were jealous. If they didn't have the ability, they became envious and tried to take advantage.

Or, those with malicious intentions were even looking to destroy Sedona City. Why should your territory be so good? Why can't mine be like that?

These thoughts were taught to James by Ben. The thing he heard most from his father was that human malice doesn't come without reason. It's driven by the original sin of jealousy.

"Step, step, step..."

James quickly arrived at Drunken Night Restaurant. As soon as he entered, he saw a crowd desperately fighting over food, stuffing their mouths like they hadn't eaten for three days. At the window, people were constantly lined up to get their servings.

"Delicious, so delicious! What was I eating before, crap?"

"Oh my God! Why, why did I only come to Sedona City now? I've decided I'm not leaving!"

"Add me to that! I won't leave either! I don't want to go back to a life worse than that of a stray dog."

"..."

These words made James twitch his mouth in disdain. Where's your dignity? Just from one meal, you've decided not to leave?

"..." James looked at these people with contempt. It's just one meal, is it really that special? If you had tasted the food from the Lord's mansion, you wouldn't want to leave it either.

Shaking his head, James found a waiter and inquired about the private room where the City Lord of Sakura and the others were. After receiving confirmation, he opened the door and walked in.

"Eh? Where is Lord Lucas?" The City Lord of Sakura glanced around but didn't see anyone else behind James.

"Apologies, our City Lord is currently entertaining important guests and won't be able to join today. He asked me to convey his message that tomorrow, the City Lord will invite all of you to watch the competition," James said with a slight nod, speaking politely.

"This..." The City Lord of Sakura and the other lords were stunned for a moment, as they hadn't expected such a rejection.

To think that five city lords had come personally, and yet they were still turned down. How important could the guests be? Or was it an attempt to assert dominance, to showcase the authority of their lordship?

"Well then, we won't disturb your meal," James said with a hint of a smile in his eyes. Without waiting for them to speak, he turned and left the room.

"..."

Inside the private room, the atmosphere immediately became tense. The City Lord of Sakura and the others wore displeased expressions. They had come all the way to Sedona City to give Lucas face, and yet they were still not allowed to meet him.

Sitting in the corner, Bryan's face was filled with embarrassment. Didn't these people have any self-awareness? The city lords came in person, clearly with something to discuss, and yet they still expected the host to come to them with all the courtesy?

"Let's eat first," Said the City Lord of Sakura in a low voice.

"Fine, let's eat, but tomorrow I will certainly ask the City Lord of Sedona if this is how a noble should treat their guests?" One of the other city lords said angrily, practically slamming his fist on the table.

Bryan recognized this city lord, a noble named Yosen. He was quite powerful, with a territory located three days' journey from Sakura City and five days' journey from Sedona City.

Yosen's territory was a large plain, and his primary source of income came from horses. He reportedly raised over a thousand horses annually, generating several hundred gold coins in income each year.

This was one of the reasons for his confidence. Economically, his strength was on par with that of the City Lord of Sakura. However, this winter, he had been somewhat frustrated, as not many of his horses had been sold.

Earlier, a mysterious merchant had placed an order for two hundred warhorses, but by the time winter came, the buyer never showed up.

Yosen had come to Sedona City to try and sell his warhorses. He had heard that the City Lord of Sedona was quite wealthy and figured he wouldn't mind buying some warhorses during the winter.

"Yosen, don't be angry. There's no need for that. Maybe the host really does have important guests to entertain," Another city lord spoke up, though his tone was somewhat cold.

"Hmph!" Yosen snorted in disdain and decided to shut his eyes in frustration.

"Everyone, please order your food," Said the City Lord of Sakura.

He picked up the menu, and a flash of surprise crossed his eyes. Not only did they have private rooms, but the method of ordering food was quite unique.

The server, standing nearby, quickly approached and took out a small notebook. "Esteemed guests, may I ask if you would like to place an order?"

"Yes!" The City Lord of Sakura nodded and began flipping through the menu. Upon seeing that some of the dishes were priced in silver coins, he flipped the menu back to the front.

"This one, and this one…" The City Lord of Sakura selected four dishes from the same page and then closed the menu, saying, "I've ordered four dishes. The rest of you can order what you like."

"Give it to me!" Yosen snatched the menu. He too saw the prices of the dishes, and his pupils constricted. He discreetly flipped back to the front and selected four dishes that were more reasonably priced.

"Alright, that'll be all," Yosen handed the menu to the person sitting next to him.

The server, with a strange look on his face, followed them and began noting down the dishes ordered by the three city lords. Each had ordered four dishes, adding up to a total of twenty dishes.

"Alright, esteemed guests, please wait for a moment, the dishes will be out soon," The server said, bowing before he exited the room.

Click!

The door closed behind him, and the server looked at the names of the dishes on the menu, a strange expression on his face as he mumbled to himself, "Exquisite Soup Cabbage, Green Snake Crossing the Mysterious Waters, Six-Colored Water Dumplings, Wild Mountain Chicken and Bamboo Shoot Soup…"

He glanced back at the door of the private room, grumbling under his breath, "These people are really strange, do they all like soup so much? Twelve soup dishes, really?"

The server didn't bother to remind them about the order. He had already become unhappy when they were bad-mouthing the City Lord. Did they think they could meet him just because they wanted to?

Didn't they see how busy the City Lord was, working hard every day to make life better for everyone? He even worried about trivial matters like arguments and fights, and organized boxing matches for people.

'I tried to enlist in the army before but couldn't because of my body. There were many people who didn't have jobs before Lord Lucas came and he cared about everyone's well beings. And I can't believe it no matter how much I look at this restaurant. No one knew this type of building could be made. This restaurant is famous for its food and its building.'

The server made his way while thinking about the restaurant.

While building this restaurant Lucas faced many problems but he solved them with his knowledge and the information he got from Earth. The first thing was foundation, building a foundation for any building involves detailed planning, design, and construction to ensure the structure is safe and durable. He took help from some builders on Earth by saying that he wanted to open a new restaurant. He also conducted soil tests for choosing the best and suitable place which would fit his requirement.

After choosing the area, next was drainage which was the most important part and the biggest problem for Lucas. For that he thought about building a separate drainage system for the restaurant, it was very hard but also very beneficial. Then comes the foundation, he chose a deep foundation as the structure would be sturdy. He ensured that the foundation could support the weight of the restaurant, including furniture, equipment, and occupancy loads.

After preparation he started the work first was Site Preparation. Which include Clearing the Site and Excavation.

Second was setting Up the Foundation for Footing Layout and Formwork which shape the concrete footings and walls. Then comes reinforcement with rebar installation. Everything happened under Lucas's eyes so there won't be any problem. He used Earth's cement to make concrete. And it took the longest time. The underground basement was also made under Lucas's observation so the workers won't mess up.

To the common folk of Sedona City, Lucas was a hardworking noble, waking up before dawn every day to handle government affairs, barely ever having time to leave the castle for leisure.

In reality, since Annie had been helping him with the administration, Lucas often slept in until 6 in the morning on days with bad weather. He usually only spent about three to four hours a day on administrative matters, most of the time just planning about the city. Like how to improve its infrastructure, people's daily life and many other things. He also had to train his body daily so he could properly use the benefits he got from travelling between Earth and this world.
