Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 269: Chapter 266

"Special," This word was the most commonly used to describe Lucas, from people like Mina and Annie, which made Lucas chuckle.

Was he special? Yes, he was very special. He had the ability to cross over to this world, with the knowledge he gained back on Earth. He had lived in a high-pressure, fast-paced society…

Lucas appeared very special in this era. He could be said to be at odds with many things, but he also blended in well. He didn't try to radically change the established customs and traditions.

"I'm not special, I just dare to challenge outdated norms. You can think of me as an innovator," Lucas said, pouring himself another cup of bamboo tube wine. He took a sip, then slowly continued under Elisa's astonished gaze, "Even if I don't do this, maybe in ten years, or twenty years, someone else would. Rejecting other races is the most foolish thing to do."

"Rejecting other races is the most foolish thing to do?" Elisa's green eyes widened. This was the most agreeable thing she'd heard.

During her time living in Sedona City, she had seen beastkins and humans coexisting peacefully. There were occasional frictions, some fights, but they felt comfortable.

From the eyes of the humans, she saw not discrimination, not superiority, but equality. It was unlike other places, where the mention of beastkins or elves was met with either disgust or desire.

"The sense of superiority between two races, I don't know how it came about."

Lucas gently rotated the wine glass with two fingers and spoke calmly, "Five years ago, beastkins had their own kingdom. Back then, humans wouldn't have openly captured beastkins to turn them into slaves, right?"

"Of course not, that would have led to war," Annie replied, tilting her head.

"Exactly. Five years ago, humans did not discriminate against beastkins and other races, but now they do."

Lucas finished his drink in one gulp, then tilted his head and scanned the room, lightly smiling. "I'm just bringing the situation back to how it was five years ago!"

All the changes were happening gradually. Lucas was slowly shaping people's minds, like the principle of water dripping onto stone. Every day, little by little, he was fostering a longing in people for the kind of life he described.

Human habits are powerful. If you try to change them too abruptly, it could backfire.

Just like the difference between the local residents of Sedona City and the outsiders—one is accustomed to it, while the other is shocked.

However, with a solid foundation of local people, it becomes easy for newcomers to be assimilated into the local way of thinking. This is a cultural invasion, where people betray the era they belong to and enter Lucas's era.

"This..." Elisa opened her mouth slightly, suddenly unable to speak.

She understood Lucas's point. She also understood why beastkins and elves were discriminated against—they had no homeland, no country, they had lost everything.

Countries like the Kingdom of Siacan, on the other hand, treated these homeless people as dangerous, rejecting them.

In reality, Lucas also understood that beastkins were like the war refugees from the Middle East on Earth—not everyone dared to take them in.

But Lucas did. He needed people, and he dared to take them in. Discrimination simply didn't exist for him.

"Don't think too much. Just use your beautiful eyes to witness it," Lucas said, pouring Elisa another cup of bamboo tube wine.

Sometimes, too many beautiful words aren't as valuable as actions. The beastkins living in Sedona City now are the best proof of that.

"I understand!" Elisa smiled faintly, lifting her cup and slowly taking a sip. She whispered, "You are a great person!"

She didn't reveal her identity as an elf because she was different. She was the White-haired Demoness, an elf worth a thousand gold coins.

If her true identity were exposed, it wouldn't take a month for thousands of bounty hunters to flood into Sedona City, all watching her closely.

Even an ordinary elf in Sedona City would have a better life than her, simply because she was ranked tenth in bounty hunting tasks.

Great? Lucas shook his head. He knew that a few words wouldn't make Elisa reveal her identity.

By now, he also understood that Elisa wasn't simple. Today might just be a test—she probably didn't know what race he was either.

To be aware, this world is home to many different races, not just beastkins. There are also elves, dwarves, and many other races that Lucas has yet to encounter.

He had heard from Annie about a dwarven kingdom to the north. It was known as a kingdom of craftsmen, famous worldwide for its armor, most of which were produced by the dwarves.

Dwarves? Lucas was quite curious about how short they actually were. However, since the Kingdom of Siacan was located to the west, it was still quite far from the north.

The atmosphere fell silent, and this made Annie, Nicole, and the others exchange looks. Their gazes toward Elisa were filled with curiosity. They had realized that Elisa was not human, otherwise, she wouldn't have said such things.

As for whether she was a beastkin or an elf, they weren't sure. After all, there were many kinds of beastkins, and some were very similar to humans. For example, the monkey-type beastkins—if you hid their tails, very few people would be able to tell they were beastkins.

At that moment, there was a loud knock at the door of the dining hall!

"Come in," Lucas called out.

"Creek..."

The door opened, and James walked in, saluting. "Young master, the Lord of Sakura City has arrived, along with a few other city lords."

"Oh?" Lucas raised an eyebrow, his black eyes flashing. This was faster than he had expected.

"They would like to invite the young master to the Drunken Night Restaurant for a meal," James continued.

"Reply to them, tell them that I have guests today and it's inconvenient for me to leave," Lucas glanced at Elisa and smiled lightly. "I'll invite them to watch the competition tomorrow."

The competition he referred to was ice hockey. It had been snowing for the past few days, covering the field, but today they had started clearing it. Tomorrow, they will be able to have a match.

"Understood!" James responded.

"Here, warm yourself up," Lucas tossed a bottle of white wine toward him.

"Huh?" James quickly caught the bottle with both hands, his face lighting up as he exclaimed,"Thank you, young master!"

"Go ahead!" Lucas waved his hand.

"Yes!" James saluted and then left.

"Young master, they don't seem to have good intentions!" Annie said softly.

"It's fine, you'll know tomorrow," Lucas smiled gently. Of course, he knew why they had come—they were just trying to take advantage. But did they really think his advantages were so easy to take?
