Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Spectators!
"What did this group do to anger the heavens? Look at how pitiful they are, surrounded by so many soul beasts!"
The five members of Zero Class hid nearby, observing the battle between the Dou Ling Academy team and the soul beasts. They had no intention of intervening.
After all, this was the Spirit Ascension Platform, a simulation where true danger was minimal. Moreover, given the combatants' relative strengths, any rash interference from Zero Class could backfire.
"Which academy are they from? They look like a proper battle team," muttered Xie Xie, squinting at the uniforms of the Dou Ling team members.
"No idea," Tang Wulin shook his head.
"Look there," Gu Yue said, nudging Jing Xiaoyu and pointing toward the center of the soul beast horde.
Following her direction, Jing Xiaoyu quickly understood why the seven were being attacked. In the heart of the soul beast horde lay an elegant, emerald-green swan. Though its aura was weakened, its graceful form still shone through. Clearly, it had recently been attacked.
The Emerald Swan!
This was undoubtedly the guardian of this area of the beginner-level Spirit Ascension Platform—a 3,000-year Emerald Swan. It was no wonder so many soul beasts had come to its aid; its status as a top-tier support soul beast was undeniable.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk!" Jing Xiaoyu clicked his tongue. "These guys are bold, attacking an Emerald Swan. No wonder the soul beasts are swarming them."
Scanning the scene further, his eyes narrowed as they settled on three powerful soul beasts standing protectively near the swan: a 5,000-year Mandala Snake, a 5,000-year Swordback Tyrannosaurus, and a 5,000-year Two-Headed Hellhound.
"Those are the heavyweights of this area," Jing Xiaoyu murmured. "This is the upper limit for beginner-level Spirit Ascension Platforms. Any stronger, and they'd be moved to the intermediate-level area."
"Hey, I recognize their uniforms!" Xu Xiaoyan suddenly exclaimed. "They're from Dou Ling Academy. I've seen them before!"
"Dou Ling Academy?" Jing Xiaoyu, Gu Yue, Tang Wulin, and Xie Xie turned toward her, curiosity written on their faces. Jing Xiaoyu asked, "How do you know what Dou Ling Academy uniforms look like?"
"Because I've seen them, silly!" Xu Xiaoyan giggled.
"Fair enough," Jing Xiaoyu replied, chuckling awkwardly at his redundant question.
The Dou Ling Academy team was clearly struggling. Despite their best efforts to break free of the soul beast encirclement, they were hindered by a powerful foe—a 4,000-year Earth King, whose massive, boulder-like body blocked their path. Even with one Soul Elder and three Soul Masters working together, defeating the Earth King seemed nearly impossible.
Meanwhile, the rest of the team was too occupied to lend support, as soul beasts continued to swarm in from behind. A new encirclement was forming, rendering their earlier efforts futile.
Suddenly, the petite girl at the team's center unleashed a burst of crimson light. The glow enveloped her teammates, radiating an aura of frenzied intensity even from hundreds of meters away.
"Is that... the Ruyi Disk?" Jing Xiaoyu muttered, squinting at the girl's circular martial soul. Memories stirred as he recalled the legendary auxiliary martial soul from the annals of Douluo history—a weapon that had once given the original Shrek Seven Monsters a run for their money.
Under the effects of the Ruyi Disk's frenzy amplification, the Dou Ling team's aura surged. Their attacks grew bolder and more reckless. The boy wielding the spear, in particular, adopted a brutal, self-sacrificial fighting style, exchanging blows with the Earth King. Despite its immense strength, the Earth King began to falter under the combined assault of the spear-wielding boy, the cat-like girl's swift strikes, and the golden nets occasionally cast by another teammate.
Finally, the Earth King fell, slain by a well-aimed thrust of the boy's spear. However, this victory came at a price: the boy's leg was pierced through by the Earth King's tail in the process.
"Brutal," Jing Xiaoyu muttered. He had to admit, the spear-wielding boy's determination was impressive. If nothing else, the boy was sure to make a name for himself in the future.
With the Earth King defeated, the Dou Ling team pressed forward, hoping to escape the soul beasts' encirclement. But their relief was short-lived.
A shadow darted overhead, landing squarely in their path. It was the 5,000-year Two-Headed Hellhound. Blue-violet flames erupted from its maw, striking the spear-wielding boy and igniting his body. The flames spread rapidly, causing the boy to collapse in agony. A teammate quickly activated his distress signal, teleporting him out of the platform and saving him from further harm.
"That poor guy," Xu Xiaoyan whispered, her expression full of sympathy.
The remaining Dou Ling team members were visibly shaken. The appearance of the Two-Headed Hellhound was a crushing blow. Even if they had the strength to take it on, they still faced the horde of soul beasts behind them, not to mention their depleted energy.
The realization dawned on them: retreat was their only option.
The Hellhound howled, rallying the surrounding soul beasts. Encircled once more, the Dou Ling team's hopes of escape were dashed. Gritting their teeth, they reluctantly activated their distress signals, one by one, and vanished from the platform.
"They're gone," Jing Xiaoyu observed, his tone flat.
"What do we do now, Xiaoyu?" Xu Xiaoyan asked, looking up at him.
Tang Wulin and Xie Xie also turned to him, curiosity and anticipation in their eyes.
"We have two choices: leave and wait out the remaining time or go in and scavenge," Jing Xiaoyu said calmly.
"Scavenge?" Xie Xie repeated, his expression skeptical. "Are you serious? We're not as strong as the Dou Ling team. Isn't that just asking for trouble?"
"Yeah," Tang Wulin added. "There are three 5,000-year soul beasts in there. Even if we could handle one or two, what about the rest?"
"That's why I gave you two options," Jing Xiaoyu replied, shrugging. "But do you think Teacher Wu will be satisfied if we just sit around for 24 hours?"
"You've got a point, but…" Xie Xie trailed off, scratching his head. "Is there a better plan?"
"Of course," Jing Xiaoyu said, smiling faintly. "We aim for the Emerald Swan. If we take it down, the soul beasts will scatter on their own. What do you think, Xie Xie? Can you handle it?"
"Uh…" Xie Xie glanced nervously at the Swan, flanked by the Mandala Snake and the Swordback Tyrannosaurus. He shook his head vigorously. "Nope, not happening!"
"Then what's your plan?" Gu Yue asked coolly.
Xie Xie stiffened under her icy gaze, instinctively straightening up. "I'll follow Xiaoyu's lead."
"Relax, I won't send you to fight the 5,000
-year soul beasts," Jing Xiaoyu reassured them with a chuckle. "I've got a plan."
