Chapter 139: Chapter 139: The Battle Team from Dou Ling Academy!
In the beginner-level Spirit Ascension Platform, by a lake, a large number of soul beasts had gathered, creating a chaotic and tense scene.
At the center of this group of soul beasts were seven human soul masters. These seven, faces grim, were keeping a vigilant eye on the beasts surrounding them. The soul beasts, in turn, glared back, their eyes fierce, their teeth bared, as though ready to pounce and tear the humans apart at any moment.
"Brother Hao, what do we do?" A tall, long-legged young woman with striking looks asked the leader of their seven-member team in a low, tense voice.
The team leader was a young man of about eighteen or nineteen, with a handsome face and a robust build. He wielded a massive, sharp-looking battle axe that gleamed coldly. Behind him floated four soul rings: two yellow and two purple. He was clearly a Soul Elder. His gaze fixed on the soul beasts ahead, he responded to the woman, "Wait and see."
"Brother Hao, are you sure?" asked another member of the team, a burly man over two meters tall. His appearance was oddly incongruent with his youthful, eleven- or twelve-year-old-looking face. "There are dozens of soul beasts here, and I even spotted a 3,000-year-old Mandala Snake. Are you really saying we should just sit tight?"
"What other choice do we have?" sighed the young leader, his tone weary. "Getting into the riot-period Spirit Ascension Platform wasn't easy. Do you really want to give up now?"
This young man was Qin Hao, a fourth-year student at Dou Ling Advanced Soul Master Academy and captain of Dou Ling's second battle team. At eighteen years old, he was a Rank 43 Assault System Soul Elder. His martial soul was the massive battle axe he wielded, the Whirlwind Axe.
The six other members of the team were also part of Dou Ling Academy's second battle team. Securing slots for the riot-period Spirit Ascension Platform had required meticulous effort. They had come with high hopes of success, only to find themselves trapped by a horde of soul beasts not long after entering.
Qin Hao couldn't shake the premonition that their venture would end in disappointment.
"This is all your fault, Ayan! If you hadn't attacked that Emerald Swan, we wouldn't be in this mess!" a petite woman with a sharp tone and pretty features snapped. She was Lou Mingyi, the team's auxiliary-type soul master and a Rank 35 Soul Elder. Her martial soul was the Ruyi Disk.
"How was I supposed to know that Emerald Swan could call for backup?" the accused, a fiery-haired young man named Guan Heyan, retorted with a sheepish smile. He was the team's second Soul Elder, a Rank 41 Assault System Soul Elder, and his martial soul was the Blazing Firefinch.
"That's enough! Now isn't the time for blame," the long-legged woman from earlier snapped. She was Luo Shuiyun, the team's third Soul Elder and vice-captain. A Rank 41 Agility System Soul Elder, her martial soul was the Water Cloud Leopard Cat.
"Captain, they're attacking!" the tall, burly man yelled suddenly. His body began to swell, reaching three meters in height. A layer of dark red armor formed over his skin, and a single horn emerged from his forehead. This was Fang Zhong, the team's Rank 38 Defense System Soul Elder, whose martial soul was the Crimson Armored Rhinoceros.
"Fang Zhong, protect Feifei and Mingyi. Guan Heyan and I will attack from the flanks. Shuiyun, scout a path. Tianxiong, hold the rear. We'll fight and retreat—our priority is breaking through!" Qin Hao commanded decisively.
"Understood!" The team immediately sprang into action.
Several Demon Hunting Dogs lunged at Fang Zhong, their jaws lined with venomous teeth and their eyes blazing with bloodlust. Fang Zhong clenched his fists, the crimson armor on his forearms shattering to reveal his third soul ring glowing brightly. A massive shield resembling a rhinoceros head materialized, protecting him and his teammates.
Third Soul Skill: Rhino Shield.
The dogs collided with the shield, bouncing off and landing dazed. At that moment, a giant axe's shadow descended with a whoosh, and a fiery claw lashed out from behind the shield, striking the stunned dogs.
Whirlwind Axe Third Soul Skill: Sky Cleave!
Blazing Firefinch Second Soul Skill: Flaming Claw!
Meanwhile, at the team's rear, another young man stood calm and composed. Holding a dark green spear, he faced down the approaching soul beasts with a determined expression. This was Shan Tianxiong, a Rank 39 Assault System Soul Elder, and the youngest member of the team at only fifteen years old. His martial soul was the Mystic Iron Exorcism Spear.
"Net Formation!" A clear, feminine voice rang out behind him. Three golden beams shot forward, ensnaring three soul beasts closest to Shan Tianxiong in glittering nets.
Seizing the opportunity, Shan Tianxiong activated his first and third soul rings. His spear glowed faintly black, and in an instant, he stabbed seven times, each strike piercing a vital point. The three entangled beasts dropped lifelessly.
"Nice job, Tianxiong! Keep it up!" A gentle-looking girl with a soft voice cheered from behind him. She was Cheng Yufei, a Rank 38 Control System Soul Elder whose martial soul was the Golden Net.
"Save the compliments for when we're out of this mess," Lou Mingyi cut in sharply. She wasn't idle, either—her Ruyi Disk glowed as she unleashed three beams of light, each enhancing a teammate's strength and energy. The entire team's aura visibly surged.
The Ruyi Disk, a long-standing auxiliary martial soul, was often compared to the Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Pagoda. Though less potent, it had a unique ability the Pagoda lacked: Frenzy Boost, which temporarily enhanced all attributes by 15%. However, it also suppressed pain, allowing warriors to push themselves dangerously far.
Lou Mingyi refrained from activating Frenzy Boost for now—it was a trump card reserved for desperate situations.
"Mingyi is right," Luo Shuiyun said as she returned from scouting. "Tianxiong, the path ahead has the fewest soul beasts, but there are two thousand-year ones. Can you handle it?"
"No problem," Shan Tianxiong replied confidently.
"Good. That's our way out," Luo Shuiyun declared, relaying the plan to the others.
The team shifted course, advancing cautiously along the scouted route. Fang Zhong's Rhino Shield bore the brunt of relentless attacks from pursuing soul beasts. The shield, under such pressure, began to falter.
Qin Hao and Guan Heyan fought valiantly at the flanks, fending off numerous beasts. However, their exhaustion was mounting; their soul power was nearly depleted.
Fortunately, Shan Tianxiong and Luo Shuiyun made swift progress. They reached the final beast standing between them and freedom—a moment of hope.
But as the last soul beast came into view, both Shan Tia
nxiong and Luo Shuiyun froze in shock.
"How is this possible?!"
