Chapter 1282: From bad to worse
There was a long silence that lingered in the air after the wyverns disappeared, but the king broke that silence.
"Everyone mount up and get ready to move."
All of the knights were surprised to hear this, but they didn't question the king as they prepared for battle.
Only the king wasn't planning to fight.
The king of the Poppin Kingdom already knew that it would be impossible to save his kingdom at this point, so the only thing that he could do was take refuge.
While he wasn't certain if the four empires would do anything to help him take back his kingdom, it was a fact that he had a powerful knight order under him. At this point where there was a powerful enemy that was hiding in the shadows, any kind of power was useful.
So at the very least, they would save his life and the lives of his knights if they were to seek refuge with the four empires.
In the end, the selfish tyrant chose to save his own life instead of caring about his kingdom. After the knights all finished mounting up, the king waved his hand for them to follow him.
They headed out the south gate of the capital. To the north was where the rebels were gathering.
At the same time, to the south was where the Democratic Union was.
After thinking about it, that was the empire that the king of the Poppin Kingdom chose to turn to.
It wasn't as if he blindly chose an empire to go to, there was a reason behind why he chose to rely on the Democratic Union.
That was because during the time he had spent in the allied forces, he had been carefully observing the relationship between the different countries for his own gains.
Even if this king was a selfish one, he wasn't a foolish king.
He was someone who was skilled enough to become a tyrant that no one took down until now.
So there were things that he could do that others couldn't.
That included having sharp eyes that could determine the relationship between countries. Even if the four empires had shown that they supported the Kite Kingdom, the king of the Poppin Kingdom had seen that there were two of them that showed a different level of support. There were two empires that seemed to hold back the support that they showed the Kite Kingdom.
It was the Sorcery Empire and the Democratic Union.
Out of these two, by the end of the war, it was only the Democratic Union that maintained their attitude.
It seemed that the Sorcery Empire had mellowed out a bit towards the Kite Kingdom, or rather towards the king of the Kite Kingdom.
So that was why the king of the Poppin Kingdom chose the Democratic Union.
Since they had the worst view of the Kite Kingdom, that meant that they were the most willing to accept him and his order of knights. As long as he survived this, the king of the
Poppin Kingdom believed that he would be able to rise up again.
Even if it meant abandoning everything that he currently had.
Along the way, there were several groups of rebels that appeared.
But when they saw that it was the king and his order of knights, they didn't actually dare stop him. They just quickly moved out of the way to let them pass.
The king and his order of knights also didn't waste any time fighting these rebels since they knew that they didn't have much time.
If they wasted too much time and let the enemy gather, then they wouldn't be able to escape.
Though it was clear by the looks in the eyes of some of the knights that they didn't want to leave their country like this.
Only they had no choice but to follow the orders of the king.
However, they just weren't allowed to reach the border in the end.
Before they could reach the border and leave the country, there were wyverns that appeared once more.
The king of the Poppin Kingdom gritted his teeth upon seeing this, but he had also prepared for this. Since they had shown up in the kingdom, he knew that it was only a matter of time they would show themselves again.
It wasn't as if they would just allow them to leave the country like this.
So the king of the Poppin Kingdom raised his spear and said, "Fire!"
As soon as he said this, there were crossbow bolts and arrows that flew into the sky. Unlike normal crossbow bolts and arrows that would have never reached the height that the wyverns were flying at, these crossbow bolts and arrows didn't seem like they would slow down as they cut through the air.
If one looked closely, they would see that there was even a faint glow around it.
Though the wyverns could see the crossbow bolts and arrows coming at them, they didn't actually do anything to stop them.
Instead, it was a wave of spells that came from the ground that suddenly intercepted these projectiles.
When the king and his knight order looked over, they found a bunch of cloaked people standing there in a line. In front of them was also a group of armoured knights that seemed like they wouldn't let them pass.
"Ah!"
There were screams that came from behind them as several of the knights seemed to have
been hit by something.
When they turned around, the king immediately ordered, "Shields up!"
Without hesitation, the knights quickly put their shields up to protect themselves.
That was because there was a wave of bullets that were coming at them.
The knights that were in the front had their shields dented from the bullets.
The knights that were in the back didn't suffer as much, but they were still pushed back by the
force of the bullets.
"What's going on here?" The king roared out in frustration.
After all, it seemed that things just kept going from bad to worse.
