Chapter 224: Chapter 225: Promotion
"Aizen... What is this dangerous man plotting again?"
Makoto silently pondered in his heart.
Yet, Makoto understood all too well that Aizen was much like his Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu. The more one fixated on him, the more likely they were to fall prey to the illusions he so masterfully crafted on the surface.
For Aizen, the true danger lay concealed beyond Kyoka Suigetsu, not within it.
"Hopefully, the traps I've carefully set will reveal a glimpse of his true intentions..."
With that silent hope, Makoto, still feigning a body not fully recovered, assisted Unohana in treating the wounded Shinigami.
After all, aside from Koga and the Visoreds, Aizen's actions had also drawn a large number of Gillians into Karakura Town.
While Gillians posed little threat to Captain-level Shinigami, for humans and ordinary Shinigami, their presence symbolized overwhelming despair and power.
As the incident gradually came to a close, Shinigami began returning to the Soul Society one after another.
Before long, Aizen, who now openly wielded a Bankai, was unsurprisingly promoted to Captain of the Fifth Division, with Gin assuming the role of Vice-Captain.
Following the "Zanpakuto Rebellion Incident," it seemed Yamamoto deeply recognized the urgent need for bolstering the strength of the Gotei 13.
In a series of rapid promotions, several newly appointed Captains with Bankai mastery emerged, filling the vacant positions within the Gotei 13 as if they had sprouted overnight.
Komamura Sajin became the new Captain of the Seventh Division.
Tosen Kaname assumed command of the Ninth Division.
Kurotsuchi Mayuri was appointed Captain of the Twelfth Division and Director of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute.
Within mere months, the Gotei 13 welcomed a total of four new Captains, including Aizen.
Meanwhile, after suffering a second severe blow from Koga, the one-armed Sojun formally stepped down as Vice-Captain, and the position was passed on to Byakuya.
However, despite these familiar names, none of these events had much impact on Makoto's life.
Following the conclusion of the "Zanpakuto Rebellion Incident," Makoto moved back to Unohana's courtyard. This time, he openly took up residence in the adjacent room, which was spacious enough to be considered a master bedroom.
Since the near-disastrous incident where Makoto was kidnapped, almost losing her disciple, Unohana's attitude towards him had subtly changed.
She seemed to show more outward concern for him and had become more indulgent of his minor whims.
Gradually, this shift emboldened Makoto. He began to relax his behavior, even going so far as to manage official duties from the comfort of the courtyard.
Now, Makoto no longer needed to remain in the office all day, dealing with a constant stream of noblewomen seeking his attention. Instead, he could choose to handle only the most challenging medical cases reported by each department, focusing on patients with higher spiritual pressure.
This change not only improved Makoto's efficiency in integrating with the "Seeds of the Forest" but also allowed him to expand his reach beyond the Gotei 13 to include the Central 46, various noble houses, and the Kido Corps.
Currently, the sole limitation preventing Makoto from fully implementing his "Seeds of the Forest" plan was the fixed production rate of one seed per day.
To optimize results, Makoto had to forgo less promising "soil" and concentrate on targets with higher spiritual pressure.
---
One day, while reviewing the Fourth Division's paperwork in the courtyard, Makoto suddenly felt bored.
"Perhaps... it's been too peaceful lately, and I'm not used to it..."
With that thought, Makoto decided to leave the remaining work to Isane and Risa and prepared to brew himself some tea.
The tea, once sipped, left a refreshing aftertaste.
This was an exclusive, top-grade tea from the Kuchiki family. After the latest batch of new tea leaves was prepared, Byakuya had someone deliver a whole pound of it to Makoto.
This tea wasn't something that could be bought, as it was only circulated among noble families.
"Ah..."
After taking a sip, Makoto exhaled softly, feeling his mind clear up instantly.
His gaze unconsciously drifted toward the steaming hot spring in the courtyard.
At that moment, memories of his previous soak in the hot spring resurfaced.
Despite having been interrupted by Yoruichi in her black cat form, the experience of his entire body relaxing was something Makoto fondly remembered.
Unfortunately, since he had built this hot spring, no one had ever used it.
Perhaps out of shyness, Unohana-sensei had refrained from using it, while Makoto himself feared ending up as a floating corpse in the hot spring should he be caught by her.
However, today was different. Unohana had gone to attend a welcoming banquet for the new Captains and would likely not return for a while.
This... stirred Makoto's thoughts.
"Just a quick soak… just a quick one. It's for Unohana-sensei, to test whether the water temperature is suitable for her!"
With that rationalization, Makoto unceremoniously pushed aside the official documents in front of him, changed into a bath towel, and placed tea and snacks by the hot spring.
Since no unrelated individuals would dare intrude on Unohana's courtyard, Makoto leisurely lowered himself into the hot spring.
Warmth enveloped his entire body as his pores opened up.
"Ah..."
Leaning his head against the edge of the hot spring, Makoto let out a comfortable sigh.
The only regret he had was that the large hot spring, which could easily accommodate two people, was being used by him alone, making it feel a bit wasteful.
"I wonder... if Unohana-sensei joins me, will it feel too cramped?"
As he pondered this question, which could profoundly affect the future of the Gotei 13, Makoto became so lost in thought that he almost believed he could hear a gentle voice whispering beside his ear.
