Chapter 223: Chapter 224: Collecting The 'Remains'
Although the course of events was somewhat unexpected for Makoto, involving the Visored, Aizen, and Unohana, even though Koga had materialized a large number of the Visored's Zanpakuto spirits, he was still cut to pieces.
That scene allowed Makoto to witness firsthand the astonishing sight of Unohana in her true form during a slaughter.
This left Makoto, who was pretending to be injured, feeling a twinge of guilt whenever he faced Unohana.
However, with Koga dead, Muramasa, who had materialized into physical form, was also killed. The remaining materialized Zanpakuto spirits vanished along with Muramasa, so Makoto was not concerned about any secrets being leaked.
After all, the dead rarely speak.
Moreover, the rebellion of Makoto's Zanpakuto, Shinro Bansho, was verified by Koga.
Under normal circumstances, when Zanpakuto spirits rebelled and materialized due to Muramasa's influence, it rendered the Shinigami temporarily unable to use their Zanpakuto abilities.
Thus, Unohana had no reason to doubt the severity of Makoto's injuries and treated him with unusual gentleness, personally tending to all his wounds.
Soon after, several Shinigami who had been searching for Koga in the Human World gathered. Many of Makoto's acquaintances also approached him to express concern.
These included Kuchiki Byakuya, Soi Fon, Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika Ayasegawa, and Omaeda Marenoshin.
Especially Marenoshin, whose emotional display, with tears and snot running down his face, made it seem as if he had just witnessed the miraculous rescue of his own mother.
It was also from Marenoshin that Makoto learned of the Visored's crushing defeat.
According to Marenoshin's account, it seemed that the Visored and Koga had formed an alliance.
As a result, the Visored assisted Koga in ambushing Fifth Division's vice-captain Aizen and third seat Gin, hindering the Gotei 13 from capturing Koga.
Fortunately, Aizen managed to unleash his Bankai at a critical moment. Using a wide-area mist refraction ability to confuse the Visored, he forced them into attacking one another, buying just enough time for the other captains to arrive.
Later, Koga's Zanpakuto, Muramasa, activated its ability to seize control of the Visored's Zanpakuto spirits, resulting in their total defeat.
In the end, it was only thanks to the sudden appearance of Urahara Kisuke and Shihoin Yoruichi that the Visored were forcibly rescued.
Naturally, when Omaeda Marenoshin mentioned Yoruichi, he didn't forget to express his loyalty to her in front of Makoto, lamenting that she hadn't taken him along.
Listening to Marenoshin's account, Makoto immediately understood that Kyoka Suigetsu likely used illusions to obscure parts of the truth, causing the Gotei 13 to misinterpret certain details.
"At the very least, the Visored and Koga couldn't possibly have been in an alliance. Perhaps Kyoka Suigetsu fabricated some conversations to mislead the Gotei 13?"
"And with Aizen taking advantage of this incident to reveal his mastery of Bankai, even while under attack by former captain Shinji Hirako, it's likely he'll soon be promoted to captain."
Makoto pondered silently, recalling the hollow-like substance that emerged from Koga's chest wound in the end.
"Did Aizen deliberately help me? Or was it purely a coincidence? Or perhaps this is part of some plan of his?"
With these thoughts in mind, Makoto stood up, glanced at Unohana, who was treating other injured Shinigami nearby, and headed towards the area where Koga's "remains" were scattered.
Soon, Gin's figure, still youthful in appearance, came into view. He was holding a broom, seemingly cleaning up the scattered "remains."
Since Shinigami who had mastered Bankai underwent a qualitative transformation in their spiritual bodies, their bodies could not decompose into normal spiritual particles upon death. Hence, the Gotei 13 held Konsō Reisai (魂葬礼祭, Soul Burial Ceremony Ritual) for such Shinigami.
Therefore, it wasn't unusual for Gin, the third seat, to personally clean up the battlefield.
"Gin…" Makoto called out softly.
Gin, who had his back to Makoto, turned slightly before fully facing him with a sly, fox-like smile. His narrowed eyes gave him the look of both a trickster and a serpent as he spoke.
"Oh, isn't this the Fourth Division's Vice-captain? Looks like you didn't die. How fortunate!"
It had to be said—Gin's acting skills had improved remarkably.
His tone, laced with mockery, revealed no hint of his true intentions, though the faint malice in his words betrayed his disappointment at Makoto's survival.
However, the bracelet Makoto had placed on Gin's wrist allowed him to sense Gin's true emotions clearly.
Gin… likely acted this way to avoid raising Aizen's suspicions. Though he cared deeply for Makoto, he had no choice but to mask his concern with apparent hostility.
At this moment, however, Makoto, using the lingering spiritual particles in Kyoka Suigetsu, was certain Aizen wasn't nearby.
"Gin, after you left, Rangiku tried to find you. I happened to run into her in Rukongai recently and have arranged a place for her."
Makoto's voice was gentle. "She's currently living in Rukongai's first southern district. If you miss her, you can visit her sometimes."
Gin's expression froze for a moment, and the bracelet on his wrist rotated anxiously.
Nevertheless, he quickly regained his composure, wearing a nonchalant expression as he replied, "Oh? Thanks for the reminder, Makoto-kun. I almost forgot she existed."
Makoto smiled faintly, then bent down to pick up a piece of the "remains," carefully observing the spiritual particles within it.
In an instant, a sharp gleam flashed in Makoto's eyes.
The hollowfication process of the spiritual body was still ongoing?!
"So, Aizen has a specific purpose for having Gin collect Koga's remains…"
Gin subtly warned Makoto, indirectly criticizing Aizen's intentions. "Makoto-kun, may I have that piece? This is a task given by Vice-Captain Aizen. You wouldn't want me to get into trouble, would you?"
"Sure."
Makoto responded calmly. Hesitating briefly, he discreetly controlled a Seed of the Forest to merge into the piece before handing it to Gin.
"Thanks, Makoto-kun."
Gin smiled slyly, ignoring Makoto as he continued cleaning the battlefield.
