Chapter 23: New Companion
A year had passed since Ajax first set foot in Terra Academy, and in that time, he had successfully kept his magical abilities hidden. He spent five months working with the blacksmith, and before parting ways, the man gifted him a suppressor ring—something Ajax had once asked about. The ring helped suppress his powers, preventing them from surfacing too often, though they could still emerge under certain conditions.
His mastery over water and earth, along with his three ultimate skills, remained his most closely guarded secrets. Though he spoke with classmates occasionally, his only real friend was Storm. Their bond had grown stronger, but Ajax still preferred to keep a low profile.
One day, their class was assigned a major three-month-long project that required working in teams. Each group would consist of two younger students and one senior from an upper class. Fortunately for Ajax, he and Storm were placed together. Their senior was an 11-year-old girl named Berry, a noble from a prestigious 1st-class family. Unlike many nobles at the academy, Berry was humble and approachable—much like Storm.
The task was straightforward but challenging: they had to run a small financial firm on Bizville grounds. Their performance would significantly impact their promotion to the next grade. For Ajax, this was an exciting opportunity. Having been reincarnated into this world as a child, he still didn't fully understand its economy. This assignment was the perfect chance to learn.
Berry proved to be incredibly smart and strategic, and Ajax quickly grew fond of her. He admired her analytical thinking and problem-solving skills—traits that reminded him of his sisters and Dave from his past life. Together, he, Storm, and Berry formed an impressive team, working tirelessly to ensure their business thrived.
During those three months, Ajax learned a great deal about the world's economic structure. Lucius offered little guidance, leaving him to figure things out on his own—a challenge Ajax welcomed. Despite his usual preference for distance, he found himself drawn to Berry. She shared his passion for learning and played a major role in their team's success.
When the assignment ended, their efforts paid off. They passed with flying colors, each contributing significantly. But even after the project was over, Ajax continued to meet with Berry, seeking her out for conversation and practice.
Berry had an affinity for water magic, and her skill with it was extraordinary. Ajax admired her control over the element, and occasionally, he would ask her to spar with him. Fighting was the only way he truly knew how to connect with people older than him—much like he used to with his sister, Arrow. During their matches, he often spoke about Arrow, describing her talent and strength. Berry never seemed to mind; in fact, she enjoyed sparring with Ajax and appreciated his insights on water magic.
But over time, Berry grew suspicious.
Ajax's knowledge of water magic was too advanced for someone without an affinity for it. His understanding went far beyond what an eight-year-old should know. She couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something—perhaps he had an affinity for water himself.
Six months into their friendship, Berry finally confronted him.
One afternoon, after a particularly intense sparring session, she turned to him with a serious expression.
"Ajax, I want to duel you," she said firmly.
Ajax blinked. "A duel? Why?"
Berry gave a small smile, but her eyes were filled with determination. "If I win, we stop being friends. If you win, we stay friends."
Ajax frowned at the strange conditions. "What? Why would I risk losing our friendship over a fight?"
"It's not about winning or losing," Berry explained. "I just want to push you to your limits. I know you're hiding something, and I think it's time for you to reveal your true strength."
Lucius's voice echoed in Ajax's mind. She's trying to force you to use your water magic. She's figured out that you're not just some ordinary fire mage.
Ajax hesitated but knew this moment was inevitable. He had kept his powers hidden for a long time, but Berry wasn't trying to hurt him—she just wanted to see him for who he really was.
He exhaled slowly, then met her gaze. "Alright, Berry. I accept your challenge. But I warn you… you may not like what you see."
