Shattered Destiny : Fate

Chapter 2: A Starring Soar

By the time Teo turned eleven, his father, Emmanuel Stander, had managed to carve out a better life for their family. He had gained some financial stability abroad, allowing them to move from their humble village to a nearby town. Although they could only afford a rental property at that time, it was a significant step up from their previous living conditions. They also had a plot of land where they dreamed of building a proper home—a symbol of hope for the future.

Starting at a new school was daunting for Teo. He had always excelled academically, but he felt socially awkward, especially since his only friends had been his cousins. Now, he was surrounded by unfamiliar faces and a challenging curriculum that only added to his anxiety. On his first day, he couldn't let go of his mother, Agnes, as she tried to leave him at school. In a moment of overwhelming fear, he decided to follow her back home, feeling defeated and out of place.

However, the following day, Teo resolved to face his fears head-on. He gathered his courage and stepped into the schoolyard, where he was greeted by curious looks from other students. Slowly, he began to make friends, including Dave, the son of their landlord, who quickly became his closest companion. He also bonded with two girls who felt like sisters to him, bringing a sense of warmth and comfort to his otherwise awkward existence.

Despite finding a group of friends, Teo still felt an underlying sense of loneliness. He was comfortable around the boys, but he struggled to talk to other girls outside of his "sisters." While Dave and the girls around him explored the budding romances typical of their age, Teo found himself on the sidelines, watching and longing for a connection he couldn't seem to grasp. As he observed Dave laughing and flirting, Teo felt a growing ache in his heart, one that stemmed from his unrequited crushes and the feeling that he would always be an outsider in matters of love.

Life in the rented house was going relatively well until one fateful day when the landlady accused Agnes of theft—a baseless accusation that shook their household to its core. Feeling unjustly wronged, Agnes fought to defend herself, but the landlady's mind was made up. In the end, they were forced to leave, packing their belongings and moving into their unfinished house. Although it was a setback, Teo found solace in the knowledge that they were still together as a family, and he clung to the hope of a brighter future.

Just a year later, as Teo turned twelve, his father returned from abroad for a visit. It was a monumental occasion for Teo, who had only known his father through stories and photographs. This reunion was marked by a flurry of emotions—joy, nervousness, and an unspoken longing for connection. Spending time with Emmanuel was both exhilarating and challenging; their time apart had created an invisible barrier between them, one that they were both eager to break down.

Their family time was a blend of laughter and tentative bonding, but the happiness was short-lived. After just a few days, Emmanuel had to leave again, but this time, he left Agnes with a surprise: she was pregnant. The news sent a wave of excitement through Teo, who had longed for a sibling to share his life with. When his baby sister finally arrived, he was overwhelmed with joy. The moment he held her in his arms, he felt an indescribable love that enveloped him, contrasting starkly with the unusual boy he had been at birth.

Family members flocked to their home to celebrate the arrival of the new baby, including Agnes' father, Teo's beloved grandpa. The joy of the occasion, however, was tinged with sadness as his grandmother had passed away when Teo was six. Her absence was felt deeply, but the new baby brought a glimmer of hope into their lives, reminding them of the cycle of life.

Just two months after his sister's birth, tragedy struck again. Agnes' father suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. The news hit the family hard, shattering the joy that had surrounded them. Teo was heartbroken but understood the gravity of the situation. He was told that his grandpa wished to see him one last time. The news brought a wave of dread, but he knew he had to be there for the man who had always been his pillar of strength.

When Teo arrived at the hospital, his heart raced as he entered the sterile room. His grandpa lay there, frail and unresponsive, a shadow of the vibrant man he had known. Tears streamed down the old man's face, and Teo felt a pang of sorrow. He rushed to his grandpa's side, resting his head on the man's chest, wishing to convey all the love and gratitude he felt in that moment.

As they shared those precious last moments, the world outside faded away. Teo felt time slip through his fingers like sand as he listened to the rhythmic beats of his grandpa's heart. It was a profound connection that transcended words; in that quiet room, they communicated through love alone.

But as he sat there, an unsettling silence enveloped the room. The old man's tears flowed freely, a torrent of unspoken words and emotions, yet Teo remained still and unresponsive, as if caught in a trance. His eyes were closed, and his chest barely rose and fell. The nurse entered, her expression shifting from concern to alarm. "Teo," she called gently, but there was no response.

"Time to leave now," she said, attempting to usher Teo away. But she halted when she noticed the stillness of the boy beside the bed. "Why isn't he moving?" Her voice trembled slightly, and she rushed to Teo's side, shaking him gently. Still, there was no reaction.

The atmosphere thickened with tension. Was Teo simply overwhelmed by grief, or was something more sinister at play? His grandpa's tears flowed like a river, and the nurse's frantic attempts to rouse the boy only heightened the suspense. What could have caused this unresponsiveness? Was it merely the weight of emotion, or had something more tragic befallen him?

As the nurse desperately called for medical assistance, Teo lay there, trapped in an abyss of stillness. The room was filled with the old man's tears, echoing the deep love and anguish they had shared over the years. The unanswered questions hung heavy in the air: What had happened in those fleeting moments of connection? And would Teo awaken from this mysterious silence?
